Great day, good value!
Our group played McDowell on day 2 of a 3 day trip. We enjoyed it so much we opted for the replay and got in an additional 11 holes before the sun went down.
Nice clubhouse, bar and restaurant. Friendly staff and good practice facility. The condition of the course was good and layout enjoyable. The course was challenging but every hole has a bail out area; i.e. if you play smart you won't walk away feeling beat up!
Good value on GN and twilight replay a good deal! We'll be back.
Good Experience
Played around 10am during the week and the course was pretty packed. We got breakfast burrito's from the restaurant and it was delicious. Range and facilities were nice. Course had a Taylormade demo day so prior to my round I was able to test out some drivers that I had been looking at. That was a huge bonus!!! Pace of play was good considering they were booked til the late afternoon. Course was in good shape and fun. We got paired up with a few guys that had played the course so he was able to give us some tips. The starter "Tito" I believe, was extremely nice and helpful. Would play her again because of the excellent views and nice course conditions. Only issue that day was with the rangers. Yes, it was packed that day but they were slightly rude and need to respect the golfers better. One example I will share, included a ranger that told me to drop a ball as I was looking for mine because I was not going to find it. I was looking around a bunker that merged into a waste area. I had not been looking long and the golfers in my group were still hitting their second shots. We were maintaining pace of play well so it was not his place to step in. Had a few other run-ins with the Rangers but it did not deter our experience. Overall, a fun and enjoying day on the course.
General comment
I've played here many times with positive results. This time was disappointing. Bag drop staff (one of them particular) was snotty not only to me but others as well. Not a good start. Pro shop staff were great. Now the beverage cart girl seemed like she didn't want to be there. We had to flag her down so she would stop. Not friendly or cordial. We asked what brands of beer she had and she said go look for yourself. Really!?! And no beverage cart on the back nine at all on a hot busy Friday afternoon. Really!?!. We called the kitchen from the course and we were told they were not sure if the beverage cart was still working or not. Really!?! This just added to a negative experience for the day. I won't be going back any time soon. Lots of other great courses in the area to play. I was a golf club board director so customer service is very important to me. I'm hoping this is an isolated event for this golf course.
Great Experience
This was my first time playing at this course and my first time playing in AZ. I would definitely go back considering the course conditions and the scenery. The range and practice facilities were also nice. They had a Taylormade demo day which gave me the opportunity to try out some drivers I was interested in, so that was a plus. The starter was very friendly and provided some good course insight. The course was slammed that day and the place of play was very good. We ordered breakfast from the restaurant and it was delicious.
The one knock on this course was the course rangers. On the front nine, I felt the rangers were watching our every move. I hit a ball in the waste area (not far off the fairway) and was looking for it while the other golfers in my 4-some hit their balls. I had not been looking for the ball for very long when I hear the ranger tell me to drop a ball because I wasn't going to find it. Then on the next hole the other cart in our group drove on the waste area (no cacti or rocks in sight) and yet again the ranger came up and said something to them. Finally, we were teeing off on the back nine (hole 10) when the ranger stood right behind each one of us as we teed off. Then he followed us and was sitting behind one of our golfers while he was hitting his second shot. We had to ask him not sit behind us as we were hitting because it was a distraction. After that, we did not see the Ranger again and had not issues.
Overall, great experience, great weather and great conditions. The rangers could chill out a little and respect the golfers a little better. Still a very nice course and challenging. I would go back to play here again.
Pretty good value, excellent course
Great layout and not bad for walking (with the exception of getting to and from a couple of holes). The course was very well maintained. Green fairways, very nice tee boxes, gorgeous sand traps. The greens were a bit slow, which was surprising. The marshals do an amazing job of keeping the pace of play at 4 hours (we tee'd off at 7:30 so pace wasn't much of an issue for us, but the range was packed around noon so I could imagine it gets a bit more challenging later in the day).
Next year, we will definitely plan to walk the 18.
SLOW!!!!!
Group in front was two holes behind. Ranger did nothing. 5.5 hour round.
Very enjoyable
We played this for the first time. It is a nice layout with no hidden surprises. Both my hubby and I enjoyed this and would play again. There was a frost delay and our 12:58 time got moved to 1:28. The pace of play still allowed us to finish. Yay!
Loved the course
enjoyed the round immensely.. Paired up with another single and a twosome. Very tricky greens, seemed to roll forever and easy to misread. Course was in very nice condition. Will definitely return if the price is right.
Good golf and wet weather!!!
Great price on Golfnow! Really like the layout and design. Plent of room off of tee boxes. Greens rolled fast and true. Only complaint is the weather ...we had sun, wind, and rain throughout the round. It Didnt keep us from finishing. A little tip of advice....some holes play short for long hitters. Had to apologize once for hitting into green side bunker....also couple short par 3s that are really tough to get close with front pin locations. Wedge game must be on!!!
Great track, poorly marked
Great layout, well maintained, professionally and well run. Loved the course itself. Major problem -- no GPS and marked sprinkler heads are few and far between. One of the most poorly marked coursed I've played. Mentioned this in the pro shop and the response was "yeah, we get that a lot". Well, if you get that a lot, you should do something about it. In spite of the overall high quality of the course, I would not go back simply for this reason.
New and definitely improved!
I enjoyed playing value golf at the former Sanctuary Golf Club over the past several years each time I visited the Scottsdale area. The trade off was you played on rock hard fairways and a few holes were squeezed in, but it was a fun course with some unique holes. You could always count on running in to a few vermin as well. When I recently showed up the pro said I wouldn't recognize the place including the name. He was pretty much correct. But the good news is that they retained everything that I liked about the old course, but improved many of the tight holes that had great potential making the course more playable. They also added five star conditions and spruced up the whole facility. The course has very entertaining par fours with a blend of long holes and short holes, and good variety in the par threes. It is definitely a course to add to your line up if you are visiting the area.
Challenging Layout large tricky greens.
Great deal on golf now. Very nice layout with excellent customer service! Played in less than 4 hours. Pick the right tees as course plays long. We played gold and into wind some of the par 4 I could not reach in 2. Large tricky greens very nice bunkers with consistent sand. Overall very nice day!
Excellent conditions, fun course
Impressed with the conditions, great course with some great views. Starter allowed us off early and staff was super friendly. Definitely will be back!
great practice facilities,great course
Very nice course, challenging, but fair, greens are quite deceptive with undulations that are hard to see.
Exceeding expectations
Brought friends from out of town to Mcowell mountain. This was my first time there. From the greeting at bag check-in to leaving the facility, people couldn't have been nicer. Course is in great condition. We played as a foursome at 945 on a Saturday and finished surprisingly much under 4 hours. We saw a ranger about every 3 holes. 2 rangers riding the course kept things moving even though it was cart path only (only 2 more days of that) and windy early. Definitely will return.
Very playable for tee length choices and fairway widths, but still challenging.
Beautiful, rolling course with a variety of differences between holes. My wife and I will play it again.
