Lakes at Firewheel Golf Park
About
The Lakes Course at Firewheel is a links-style course that is loaded with water, and was a Dick Phelps creation on his return to Garland in 1987. Hole 7 is the most difficult–a long 549-yard par 5 that requires an approach over a pond.
Getting there : From Dallas, take Hwy. 75 north and exit Arapaho. Turn right and when you come to N. Garland Ave., turn left. Drive to W. Blackburn Rd. and turn west. The course is just down the road.

Bad experience overall
We played the Friday after thanksgiving so we were prepared for a long day. It started when the pro shop clerk was not friendly and it only got worse from there. We were 15 minutes late teeing off. I expected that. Pace of play was slow. I expected that on a holiday Friday. What put this experience over the edge of unacceptable was the complete lack of a Marshall or a beverage cart. We finally saw the bev cart on 17 for the first time and she drove right past us like we werent there. I guess she figured we were almost done so we didn't need anything. I expect a course to be busy on a Thanksgiving Friday. The problem with this course is they must not have expected it and we're utterly unprepared. The greens keeper must have been in a bad mood too. Some of the hole placements were beyond unfair. Bad day all the way around.
Crowded & Slow
Beautiful fall day and the course was in decent shape but it took 2.5 hours to play the front 9 and was so backed up on the 10th hole I gave up even thinking about playing the back nine before dark. The Starter was not around and I never saw a Marshall so I packed my clubs and went home.
This course is challenging and a good time.
I enjoyed the challenge and lost three balls in the water.
Good Value - would play again
Nice layout. Course not very crowded for a mid-day Wednesday. Lakes Course was out of service for maintenance that day but Old Course still not crowded. Practice Facilities are very good - range, chipping/sand greens, putting greens.
Fairways / Tees in good shape. Greens in good shape and rolling true to a 11.5 stp. Balls in rough were tough to find due to height of grass
Good course - sorry customer service
- When I walked into the pro shop to pay the employee was sitting on a couch half asleep watching football
- took almost 20 minutes just to ring me up
- No cart lady/person.
- cart was very weak - needed to be charged
Good course for the price
Nice course for the price. Always seems to be in good condition.
Great but tough course!
Course is kept in great conditions - you have to keep the ball in the fairway - rough is very tough not only to hit out of, but also presents finding your ball, even very close to the fairway!
Lots of water
The scorecard does not depict all of the water and not being familiar with the course this made it even more difficult. A yardage book would have made it much more enjoyable.
fun to play. several challenging holes.
Fun to play since the second cut is at the correct height. Tee boxes need more water. Bermuda greens are in good shape and are flat at the holes so a good putt drops in. Had a great time and played in less than 4 hours. Looking forward to playing it again soon.
Fun Course
With multiple good courses to choose from and in very good shape why not!
Great value
I played the lakes course. Nice track. Stay out of the rough and the greens are slow but overall a great deal for the price.
Watch out for the tall rough!!
Still great after all of these years. Very playable but still challenging. Greens were punched maybe 3-4 weeks ago. A little slow and bumpy but putt-able. Great fairways with thick rough if you stray too far but let's face it... you shouldn't be there and it's called rough for a reason!! Friendly staff and a great value. Been playing here for 29 years.
Greens are terrible! Pace of play very slow.
Greens are way below expectation. Very bumpyw and therefore very slow.
Pace of play close to 5 hours. Never saw a marshall the entire round!
What happened Firewheel????
Course Maintence
Fairway and greens were average. Course needed to be mowed in all areas.
average course
Lots of dog legs, narrow and plenty of hazards. If your not in the fairway the tall grass will eat you alive. That may explain why the group in front was taken a long time. Marshall was out there but didn't help much.
Irritated
I Paid for 4 players but my buddies could not come. Was paired with a grandpa and his 13 yr old grandson. Not sure either had ever played before. Both, either topped their ball 50 yards or hit it sideways. After 6 holes I left them behind and then had to follow 4 women who had never heard of playing through, no etiquette. The greens were very slow but the rest of the course was in good shape. They are rebuilding the driving range so the warm up area was a joke.
Fire wheel
Great course with mature trees, lots of sand & water challenges. Will play Firewheel again!
Nice conditions
Played Lakes Course for the first time. It was in really good condition probably due to the recent rain. Lots of trees and water on the course. Local knowledge or a good Golf GPS app is essential due to the water coming into play on tee shots. I got lazy on 18 and didn't check my Golf GPS app. I hit a good 4 iron off the tee that landed in water that I didn't know was there. I'll play this course again.
pace and condition
Marshalls nonexistent after 3pm....5 hour round. AM round was 4. Greens full but slow....maybe because it was Sundat.
Switched to Old Course
The Lakes Course was backed up so they sent us out on the Old Course. The front nine was much better than the back as far as greens went with the 18th being a sand dune more than a green. The course has many switch backs and a clientele that makes finding your ball tough but it's much better than courses that use suburbia as the rough like Plantation. Good course for the price.
