Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Firewheel Old course fairways are bare
Played this one a thousand times. I have never seen the grass so bare at this time of year. I hope for better weather and it fills in soon.
The greens are good though.
Terrible Tee boxes and OK greens
The Tee Boxes were so dry and hard, it made putting a tee in the ground very difficult.
Good Value
Greens were in great shape...very little to no Poa growing through
Fairways and Tees were typically just so so for this time of year
Pace of play was 4 hours on the nose. Newer carts now with GPS.
Somewhat challenging but easy enough to be enjoyable.
This is my second time playing the Old Course. It has been quite a few years since I've played there. I liked the layout. It was not too hard. Just enough challenge to be enjoyable.
I look forward to playing here again.
Enjoyable Course
The Old Course has a nice layout. For this time of year the course is in good shape and should get better now that Spring is here followed by summer. The tee boxes on some holes lacked grass. It is a fun course to play.
Decent Muni
For the money, this course is good. Like many/most courses in Texas in late winter/early spring, some of the fairways are thinnish, but greens were consistent. Pace was a bit slow, and I never saw a marshal (nor a beer cart unfortunately), but not much worse than most munis that see a lot of rounds played. A shorter course that is fairly open (i.e., you can generally play your ball from the next fairway over if you hit an errant tee shot!) and good for the beginner to intermediate player.
Great Value
$50 for a perfect Sat morning? I'll take it. Course in decent shape. Greens running fast. Fairways not fantastic but it's still technically winter. Overall, great value.
