Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Decent Muni
For the money, this course is good. Like many/most courses in Texas in late winter/early spring, some of the fairways are thinnish, but greens were consistent. Pace was a bit slow, and I never saw a marshal (nor a beer cart unfortunately), but not much worse than most munis that see a lot of rounds played. A shorter course that is fairly open (i.e., you can generally play your ball from the next fairway over if you hit an errant tee shot!) and good for the beginner to intermediate player.
Great Value
$50 for a perfect Sat morning? I'll take it. Course in decent shape. Greens running fast. Fairways not fantastic but it's still technically winter. Overall, great value.
BEST STAFF
I'm a out of towner, and I was just looking for a place to play that was close to the hotel. I found Firewheel on Golfnow and it listed 3 courses. It had descent reviews, it was really close and a great price! So I booked a tee time. I pop in the pro shop and the staff was AMAZING!!! The guy asked if i had played here before and i said no Im from Ky here on business trip with the wife. He told he had family in Ky and asked how long we were here for. I told him 3 weeks. He then explained the layout of the 3 courses, pointed out everything and said its slow today so take your time and have fun!
I played the front 9 of the Lakes Course and even though it was January, I could tell this was beautiful course. At the turn my back was killing me so I went back in to return my cart. The guy said you finished already and told him my back was out. He immediately he said., O No, let me give you a rain check discount and you come back again before you leave town. I told him that was a deal and I have been back like 5 times now!!! LOL!!!

Give the Old course a try, I bet you'll be glad you did.

First time playing
I grew up in the area but didn’t pick up golf until I moved away. Came back and was able to squeeze in an early morning solo round. Finished in 3 hrs after a group let me play through.
Loved the course, overall it was very forgiving but still had some fun problems to solve. I will absolutely be back for another round or more, for the price I’d say it was a decent deal.
