Old at Firewheel Golf Park
About
Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.
The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Slow Play
Course was in good shape and the greens rolled nicely but a bit slow outside of a very few trouble spots. Fairways were long but undoubtedly due to recent rains.
The only complaint I have is the ridiculous pace of play--5+ hours with no marshal anywhere to be found. Several fivesomes out on a holiday weekend.
fire wheels off
Greens were fairlt simple with very few slopes. Very good shape. Course drainage after heavy rains over previos days was impressive.
Fun Day at Firewheel Old Course
The Firewheel Old Course has been a favorite of mine for 25+ years. The greens are in good shape. The fairways are not pristine like some very high end courses, but they are maintained. The layout of this course makes it a really fun course to play!
Soft course.
Course is in good shape. Greens are soft and roll well. Fairways are soft. Overall the course is green and watered well. Tee boxes are level.
Quite a Challange
Tough course off the tee box since theyre are so many fairway bunkers and water hazards. But the greens were in great shape as were the fairways. The bunkers were pretty awful though.
Firewheel - The Old Seems New
Late morning round on a Friday. Great pace until slight backup at the 17th.
Fairways and greens in excellent condition. Not that I was there often (wink), but the out-of-bounds areas seemed to have been groomed recently too. Easy to find balls that "took a bad bounce".
Very good value and will return soon.
Average municipal course
The Olde Course is a nice municipal course with some pretty spots, but it appears the course is in a low lying area that floods during major rain storms because the course is littered with branches and debris from the creeks and ponds. Some holes have rough patches with no grass and hole #10 has a make shift bridge across the river that is pretty sad. I am glad I paid less than $25.
great value for a tough course
the lakes course at firewheel definitely has some challenges.
from short par 4's with doglegs and water, to wind swirling long par 3's, to really tough tee shots on par 5's, like I said, it has some challenges. greens are decent to good, they roll well, but maybe don't have the appearance of "country club". great value for a tough public course.
Lakes course was better then expected!
For the discounted price I got on here, I thought the Lakes course was great. Heard it was in better shape then the Old course.
The course was very enjoyable to play.
While it appears narrow in areas, the course opens up in most cases just beyond the tee boxes. Even though parts were more challenging, golfers of any level would be able to enjoy this course. I will be more than willing to return!
Great value for cart and green fee on a nice track.
Great value for cart and green fee on a nice track. Plenty of trees and water to keep you attentive.
Fairways were being punched while we played.
It will be better in late May. Greens were ok.
Pro shop staff was very friendly.
Overall a good experience in spite of ongoing maintenance and repairs of damaged cart path on #10
Don't play the "Old Course"
Course was a dog track. Guess I got what I payed for. Don't think the fairways have been aerated in a couple of years because I played on hardpan the majority of the day. Greens are in horrible condition so go out with a positive mindset that you're just going to have fun, otherwise you'll be as dissappointed as I was. Heard the other Courses were alot better from the guys I played with.
The greens were in great shape
The course can be played from 3 different lengths for men and is currently going through bunker upgrades but other that that the course was very well maintained.
Hot day still enjoyable
Two of us were paired up with two guys that all booked on Golf Now. Would rather have played with just the two of us but it was ok. Staff were great and friendly, course is very well maintained, greens were a little rough from aerating a week or two ago. Fairway grass was cut a little short and rough was pretty thick but was a fun course to play. Tight fairways, mid size greens, great sand in the bunkers, enough water to make it interesting but does not destroy your game. I'm not a big fan of raised greens and most of these are but still workable. Stopping power was ok. A good round of golf and worth the money. Played a little slow in the heat but you expect that on a public course.
Good course great price
Played the old course for the first time on thursday after playing the lakes course once before. The greens were great but on the slow side. the course had minimal hazards so I was able to find a most of my misses. Luckily the house I hit on the last par 5 had lexan windows or it would have been an expensive day. Not a big fan of hitting near houses so in the future ill probably play the lakes course. Plus, maybe it was b/c it was Thursday, but there were no cart girls! None! But this course definitely stays ontop of cold water so I would almost take that in exchange for the cart girls.
