Rating 74.1

Firewheel is Texas’ most impressive example of municipal golf. Owned and operated by the city of Garland, and extremely popular because of the fair price and number of available golf holes, Firewheel now sports 63 holes since the new Bridges course opened in the past few years. All three tracks can be challenging because they each incorporate a variety of hazards into their designs, including limestone that is scattered throughout the property.

The Old Course, the traditional layout, was rated No. 1 by the Dallas Morning News. Water hazards come into play throughout the design, such as on hole #18, a 400-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot and an approach shot over the same creek, which winds through the hole. Hole 9 is the feature hole, a 552-yard par 5 that rolls downhill. The tee shot is into a narrow landing area carved out of trees, and on the approach you must be in perfect position because of the strategically placed pecan trees. Number 18 is challenging with both the tee shot and the approach over a creek that winds through the hole.

Nice layout - keeps your interest.

Course was in good condition - some easy holes - some difficult holes - good set of par 3's - the cost was a very good value since I booked late the night prior to the tee time as a single - the other 3 slots were filled by other GolfNow customers.
I will be booking a future time at this facility.

Challenging day!

The Lakes course at Firewheel Golf Park is very good but very challenging, even from the Blue Tees. Every Fairway was perfect and the greens, although recently sanded, rolled true. The tee boxes were pretty nice and level for the most part which is important to me. The bunkers either have or will have new white sand in them which enhances the aesthetics of an already pretty course. My only knock is the bunkers were inconsistent in that some were very wet and others were very fluffy but that may change as the sand settles. I definitely recommend this course and will play there again.

This course is challenging due to the locations of bunkers.

Course was found to be challenging for golfer's of any age or experience level. Maitenance of the course was maintained to high level as you have come to expect. Pace of play may bit slow at times but any one who has played this course knows that is to be expected since the course tends to be a bit crowded on most tee times.

Challenging course in very good condition at a great price.

I made this tee time at the last minute, but it couldn't have gone smoother. Making the reservation was simple. The pro shop at Firewheel accepted the printout with no questions. I was able to join two other players who were great to play with. The course was in very good condition and play mover along with no delays. The whole process worked exactly as it should and the price was right.

The course is in good shape and a nice value for the money

I played with two friends on the 5th of July. It was extremely crowed. The drawbacks were the amount of time it took to play (I will play again on a non-holiday to make sure) and the lack of a drink cart. We saw the cart girl once the whole 5 hours (twice if you count the turn when we went in a bought a beer and saw her sitting at a table).

Overall I enjoyed the course and will play there again.

Enjoyable experience

We started our round at 5:oopm so we did not complete the round. The course was in relative decent shape. I was suuprise at the number of long par 3's although I scored well. I had not played this course in years so I did not rember the lay-out of the course. Most of the holes that we played were pretty wide open however there were some very interesting sand trap locations.

Lakes Course is a challenge

Great morning of golf. Got paired up with a couple of old timers and enjoyed their course knowledge especially since it was my first time playing the course. Water was in play on 16 holes, but with selective placement, the course is manageable. They were doing construction on all of the bunkers, but still had an enjoyable round. Looking forward to playing here again.

No sand in traps. Tee boxes need water and leveling.

Was twenty minutes late getting off of pre-booked tee time.
Pace was slow as locals booked several tee times for their money tourney. (They played next to the back tees and had no business playing from those tees. No marshall showed up on course to ask about play or encourage groups to speed up.

Bunkers were under repair and was never mentioned to us. Disappointing.

None of the bunkers had sand in them. They are obviously working on them and will probably be very nice, however no one ever mentioned this to us. Not on Golfnow or when we checked in. Not a good way to treat customers. Especially with so many courses in the area to play.

Poor conditions

I have always liked the layout of the Old Course but the conditions have never been great. This time was no different. There were many areas that were soggy from drainage issues and problems with the irrigation system. Even though the greens were very slow due to rain the night before and not being cut, the greens were actually in the best shape that I have ever seen them except for 3 or 4 that had large areas of sod to repair damage. So I give them credit here. But the fairways and rough were in poor shape, especially considering that we have had recently ideal growing conditions in DFW. Every other course I have played lately is in superb condition. If you don't mind sub-par conditions, the layout o this course is pretty good with rolling terrain and lots of big trees. It is not too tough except for 9 and 18 which are very strong holes.

Firewheel Bridges - Masters/Tradition

I got there an hour early - checked it and, since the course was clear, they sent me out. Happened to play on ladies day, and the ladies were finishing up - Had the course to myself.
Very interesting, challenging golf holes - fairways wide enough to hit, big bunkers around most greens, and well maintained, smooth running greens.
I liked this course far and away better than the Lakes (sister Firewheel course) - much more playable and not as narrow. When I made the turn, there was a backup on the Champions (where I was supposed to go) - so I suggested to the starter I could play the traditions since I was a single - very nice and said OK.
I had a good time there and will go back.

Old Course

This is part of the trilogy know as Firewheel - The Old Course was a fun track, plenty of challenge without penalizing for straying off the fairway too much. I found it a fun trek, definitely friendly on the ego. Because of the spring showers the course was in really nice shape.. go out and enjoy!
