Squaw Valley Golf Course - Apache Links Course
About
The original Squaw Valley course, Apache Links, opened in 1992–a Jeff Brauer design that is open on the front and more densely wooded on the back. Brauer’s work involved bringing in dirt to provide some mounding to the flat terrain, and he placed the course along a scenic creek that comes into play, mostly on the back.
No. 9 is the best hole on the front because of its split fairway. Macho men can go for the green by aiming over the lake–otherwise it plays a pedestrian 362 yards if you choose the left side, where it doglegs around the lake.
On the back, Nos. 15 and 16 are back-to-back par 4s that you’ll be glad to get out of the way. The 15th rolls 462 yards and doglegs right, requiring a tee shot over the creek. The long approach is especially challenging due to the long row of trees at the corner of the green. Hole 16 features an elevated green above Squaw Creek. Play for position off the tee because the hole is not long.

The Links
Managed to get a tee time on short notice at a course I never played at before. What was surprising is twhen checking in the staff were not real informative on giving you information. Got a small bucket of balls and asked were did it get them and said outside the door. Go out there and there are no buckets so go back into get the bucket. Bring it to the cart and there's not keys. So go back in and ask for a key. Then drive out to the range and when going to the first tee did not realize it was 36 holes so had to go back tot the pro shop to find out which course I was playing. There was no one at the first tee to ask.
The grass on the course was recently mowed and was real long to trying to find a ball in the rough was not the easiest thing.
Greens were recently aerated and slow but that can be expected as important summertime maintenance.
A simple thing like range finder reflectors on the pins was not available which made it difficult trying to get a distance.
The Ladies on the drink carts and in restaurant were great. Friendly and good to talk to.
The front 9 was a links type course but was pretty boring and easy if you hit the tee shot straight. Back 9 had more trees and water which was more interesting and challenging.
Overall was.a good experience but could have been better with some more info when checking in.
At $25 was great value with cart but would not play it if I had to pay more than $55.
Aerated greens
3:30 pace of play. The starter did an excellent job filling the gaps of play and we got off 10 min early. Rarely waited and excellent pace of play. No water or cart girl on the course. Driving range is closed certain parts of the day and there was an old folks tournament on the lakes course so they left the range a mess. Staff does a great job though and tee boxes were good at the tips and greens still a bit rough with bumps and sand and rocks. Rough was mowed shorter but still thick. Nice round and course .
Good Track
They punched the greens on 6/10 so they were a little bumpy & the fairways were a little dry but I always both of these courses...especially when I get to play 2 balls by myself!! Luck of the draw on a Friday. There are many Metrolpexers who play these courses & they are worth the trip, especially from Ft. Worth.
CHARGING EXTRA FOR CARTS
Let me start off by saying, Squaw Valley is a wonderful facility with great staff and a great course. I live 2 minutes from Cleburne Links, yet I continue to drive to Squaw Valley because of the atmosphere.
That being said, for the first time In 3 years I was charged extra for a cart, when there were 40-50 available carts in the lot. Not sure if this was a new guy in Pro Shop, but this is not the standard. You are already paying for a cart through Golf Now. I don’t care if you are solo or playing
With 3 other random players. I have NEVER been charged an extra 15 bucks to have my own cart here. That’s the BS That Whitestone and some of the many other local courses pull. If there are tournaments or a lack of carts, I get it, but this was not the case on a Monday, even with the Lakes course closed for maintenance. Hope this will not be an ongoing issue, and was just a one off. I’d hate to have to start going elsewhere, but paying additional for a cart when it already states “CART INCLUDED” is Busch league.
Friday 3:40 round
Course has been aerated on both the fairway and the greens. Rough has been mowed and lots of grass clippings as well. I still like the course but hard to pay and play here without getting a discount for the current state of the course.
Texas Golf at its best
Squaw Valley has 2 outstanding and Top Ranked courses in Texas. Both courses are recovering fast from a couple of rough winters that took a toll on most courses in North and West Texas. Greens are starting to peak and with warm air, the grass is growing. Each course is unique to itself and will challenge golfers of all levels. The pace is usually good and the staff is friendly and helpful. Conditions are what you would expect from Top Ranked courses. I personally travel an hour to play this course weekly. Enjoy.
Great shape
I have always enjoyed playing these courses. The links course we played was in excellent shape.
Course is improving
Grass is growing and course is getting in better shape. Played the tips and tee boxes are excellent and greens are rolling faster and pretty true. Pace of play still an issue with groups of 5 and slow play from the old folks out for a stroll in the tall grass looking for “free balls”. I skipped a hole to not be behind the group of 5 and then it didn’t get really slow until 16. Played 1-15 in 2:15 and 16-18 in 1 hour with waiting. Still no water on the course so bring a water bottle.
Hello, PopsinAK. Thank you for leaving us a review. We are sorry to hear your experience was anything short of 5 stars, but we hope you will give us another try in the future. Thank you for choosing Squaw Valley Golf Course - Apache Links Course.
