Challenging
1st time here loved the scenery and the overall challenge throughout the course!
Nice lay-out and beautiful course
Good views, great course
The course came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. Lots of hills and quite a few blind shots, but extremely fun to play
Beautiful and challenging layout
Maryland National is a beautiful course. Fairways were in outstanding shape. Since only a week or so removed from aeration of the greens, they were a bit hairy, but overall they putted fine, though slow. The practice facilities were great. Food from the bar at the turn was very good and reasonably priced. The GPS system was very helpful and seemed to very accurately indicate the distance to the PINS based on comparison to my laser. I very much look forward to returning with my son.
Interesting Course
Played here back right after it opened, and returned some 12 years later for the first time. The only thing I remembered about the course prior to teeing off was the dumb tree on #2. Whoever or whatever removed it, thank you!
The course has some interesting elevation change, and rather small, narrow greens that require solid approach shots. Greens are not too tricked up apart from their size, but do require thought in reading the subtle breaks. I do kind of feel like something was missing about the course though. I played it just after heavy rain the prior day, so it was wet and path only, but it was in gray shape with few casual water issues. The course was also WIDE open in the mid day on a Wednesday.
I'm not sure I'd pay full freight for it. But if you get a hot deal on here and it's worth a round.
Challenging, fun course, an hour from D.C.
This is a challenging but fair course . I loved it. It's fair relative to a PB Dye course, for example (which have miniature golf- type greens with way too many undulations). The fairways were challenging because of hills, but often acted in the golfer's favor by channeling the ball where you would want it as opposed to the wrong direction. Distance control is often important. If you don't hit it straight bring plenty of balls. The greens were not easy but they were fair also. The traps were plentiful (and the only complaint I have about the course was the coarseness of the sand in them). But there again I'm only a 50-50 sand player and had generally no problem getting out the first try. I had a late lunch and was expecting the usual tuna fish sandwich fair. I got blackened tuna instead. I'd love to go back but the course is expensive for me as a retiree (it's in the $75 to $100 range)...I got a deal for $35 or so on Golfnow which allowed me to play here. I'd love to go back.. It is a hike from the DC area (an hour from Silver Spring) but the guy I paired up with was also from the DC area and some of the better public courses are that distance from DC. I can only hit my driver 175 yards at best, although usually straight. And even I could reach the green in regulation on the par 5's. So I'm not sure why the fellow who was a senior like me didn't think the course was fair to seniors. Only one or two holes forced carries that required a shot beyond me. I saw no one walking this course, which I usually do where I play in the DC area. It is far too hilly for most walkers (and if there were any ice I'm not sure I'd want to drive a cart down a couple of the hills).
Nice Course!
The course was in great condition and the greens pretty quick. Its pretty wide open...if you miss in the right spots. Good challenges for uphill and downhill shots.
Same day decision
Glad I chose to play Maryland National. Have driven by on numerous occasions and always wanted to make the drive out to play. Found I had time to squeeze in a round and got a good deal on golfnow. Course was in excellent condition for late June. Played as a single on mid day round and never waited to take a shot. Staff, including starter, beverage cart driver Jacky and golf shop all friendly and personable. Look forward to playing here again soon. Some challenging shots and great scenery.
Beautiful Course
Very nice course, excellent condition and the view spectacular , I will come back, love it.
Good course
Only complaint is that it was slow. Told the marshall that we were 3 and a half hours into our round and were on hole 12 and nothing was done about it. Other than that, it was a beautiful setting with some nice "different" holes.
Nice round
Range is excellent, Course in good shape, Bunkers are good, Greens are fast but roll well. Overall a good round.
Decievingly Difficult
Wide open but many blind shots due to lots of elevation changes, very few flat lies, ball is always above or below your feet. Would not play it again very soon, to frustrating.
Ms
Excellent as usual....I play this course many time before and I never had any issue with MD national.. super super good
Tough Test of Golf
I got a great deal on Golfnow.com for this course. Usually a$100 course in the summer, I was able to play for less than $40. So no brainer. I got to the course a little later than expected, and didn't have much warm up time at all. I found the front 9 very difficult and the presence of the grounds crew to be challenging. They were near or around me on about every hole on the front 9, making it a bit unnerving. I was playing much better on the back 9, and also took the time to look at the GPS and even drive forward to view the hole a bit when necessary. I can normally shoot 80's no problem, and here at MD National had to play my butt off to hit 89.
This course has great gps system
Would love to back and play again only if the price can a little bit lower on weekend
Must Play
Great course, tough but fair. Keep an eye out for a cheaper price on green fees. Make sure you adhere to the dress code or they might not let you play. The pro was nice enough to let me slide on the dress code.
The best around, hands down
MD National is unequivocally the best daily-fee course in the Metro DC area.
Arthur Hills never makes it easy, but you can't knock this layout for fairness. Each hole is a unique challenge. 4 of the 5 par 3's are downhill carries over native areas to protected greens, and in my mind the hallmark of this course.
As with any big layout, you would expect to encounter some poorly maintained areas on the course, but I haven't found them. The tees are perfectly built and managed, and the greens are perfect(receptive/quick).
Most of my friends don't like to golf here because it beats them up, but I'd get membership here in a second if I lived closer. Can't wait to play again.
Beautiful, challenging, but fair test of golf. Scenic & fun!
Any Arthur Hills design is worth playing, but MD National has the natural elevation changes and scenic views of the surrounding mountains and countryside make this course one of our favorites in the Mid Atlantic region. We live 38 miles from this course and belong to a private club, but always enjoy a day trip to play this beautiful, well conditioned course. Elevated tees on nine holes offer cool looking shots and buena vistas.
Great course, great condition, great value
The condition of the course for November was A+. Greens still had grain and fairways had been over seeded. Layout is not tight, but still challenging. High and low handicappers can enjoy the course.
nice course
great course, but very challenge. if you miss the fiarway or the green, you will pay for it!
