Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.

Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.

The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.

No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.

Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Never seen this course in such bad shape

I was able to take advantage of the online deal and was surprised to get it at short notice. Once I played a few holes I realized why. The course is in poor condition. There is crabgrass all over the place. I hit balls just off the fairway and couldn’t find them due to being under the crabgrass or under piles of old grass clippings. The tee boxes are extremely hard. We have had periodic rainfall from time to time and with regular watering they shouldn’t be as dry as they are. The greens were in decent shape but have been better in the past. The layout of this course is too nice for all levels and it’s a shame it has declined as it has.

Southwyck is no where near its former glory

So very disappointed! This used to be one of my favorite courses in Houston. It is so sad to see how neglected this great layout has become.

The fairways are horrible ever since the droughts a few years back. Tees and geeens are ok but greens had not been cut so EXTREMELY slow.

Still no water out on the course!

One of the Best Bang for Your Buck Courses

Hot Deal tee time for $24. The course is in good condition. You’re getting above what you pay for. Fairways are above average. Greens are, too. Rough is just what you would think for a sub-$40 course, but it’s a great value! Course design is actually really cool. 7.5/10 overall. Quality golf experience!!

No drinking water on course

The course didn’t have any drinking water on the course and the one cart girl never seemed to make it to the back 9. Greens didn’t appear to have been mowed lately and cups hadn’t been moved in a while. Burnt edges around all cups. Price has gone up I think but nothing to shows for it really. No marshal either. Course has a fun layout.

Don’t Bother

Horrible experience. Paid $70 for a $20 course.

Horrifically uneven and bumpy fairways. Lost golf balls to thick grass and mud in the fairways. Our round took

4:20 to complete and yet we were told to speed up by the marshall. I won't be back.

My go to

Storms hit this place hard - so it’s not really fair. Wind made first four difficult - imo the best here is the back nine.

Generous Course

I only play this course once a year and it’s a generous course to my handicap with its wide open fairways as compared to some other course in the area.

It’s looks better than last year the greens seems to have gotten rid of the fungus but they were super soft. Some of the tee boxes still need some TLC. The fairways are very bumpy and make sure to book a chiro appointment afterwards. It’s a basic course, decent afternoon price with a cart and if you fade or hook it’s very forgiving.

Greens have recovered

Southwick is back to very playable. The top dressing on the greens has grown in and the greens rolled mostly true. 3:30 round at 11:30
