Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.

Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.

The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.

No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.

Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

No Title

The greens have too much poa annual weeds. I also saw some damage on several under repair. The fairways and rough had too many dallisgrasses. The fairways need to be smoother. Right now it's a teeth cracking, spine jolting moon ride over them in a cart. Some of the players have no respect for course too. They ride their carts right up to the greens.

Needs TLC.

This course has much promise and has been very nice in the past. Just a little extra fertilizer and mowing could make it very playable. 150 yardage poles to mark distance and directions could be done for little or no money. Owners don't seem to put anything into it. That is a shame because it could be nice.

Fairways were like driving the off road baja.

Greens not consistent, realistically they should have been cart path only due to standing water and very wet

Needs a lot of fairway work

The fairways on the front nine were in really bad shape. Not sure what happened, but they were even hard to drive a cart on they were so bumpy. Prior rain made the course very wet and probably should have had some cartpath only holes. No marshal so the pace of play was very slow due to a foursome ahead being clueless. This was a very good course a few years back, but has gone way downhill.

Very disappointing Fairways!

I really like the layout of the holes of this course and have been playing it for over 20 years. It is so sad to see that the Fairways have deteriorated so badly.

There is the imadequate grass and driving the bouncing golf carts to the next shot can require needing a chiropractor once you get there!

The green fees are very and in past years, it has been an enjoyable course to play. As much as I like going there, I will probably not be until I hear some word that somebody’s throwing some dirt in the crevices And filling up all the uncomfortable and unnecessary gaps.

I hope this message gets to the owners of the course and that they will do something at least try to restore this old lady back to her original beauty!

Same old song and dance

I’m a local resident so I like to check the reviews every so often to see if anything has changed/improved. I won’t play the course b/c of how terrible it is but I do hold onto the pipe dream that someday things might improve. But the reviews are the same, slow pace, horrific fairways on the front, mostly terrible greens, lack of consistent mowing of the rough, and last but not least, no water stations. They took out the water during the pandemic and never brought it back. Still have never heard an explanation. People consistently complain about the lack of water but I’ve never seen one single mention of it when the course responds to the reviews. Seriously, name one other course that doesn’t provide water. The worst part about there being basically no improvement on any of the issues the reviews raise is that the course responds with the same lip service: we strive for a 5 star experience, we’re working to improve the fairways and greens, we acknowledge the slow pace. I see the course every day from many different spots so trust me, they’re making ZERO attempt to do anything they claim in their responses. It’s like they think they can simply provide a nice apology response and that makes it all better. Very sad to see a gem of a layout be completely run into the ground.

Too bad

This course was one of my favorites but it ran down big time. The bunkers were eliminated and fairway grass neglected; very bumpy to drive on fairways almost dangerous. This course is 1 step up from a driving range! TOO BAD!

Been terrible for years

I live on Southwyck and haven't played it years. It's been really sad to see the course run into the ground in the past 5 yrs. Before the pandemic they removed all bunkers and claimed it was to make the course more playable when everyone knew it was b/c they didn't want to maintain them. During the pandemic they took out all the water coolers and never brought them back. No explanation. Name another course that doesn't provide water! The layout is great but the fairways and greens are mostly terrible. They don't water. Every other course went through the same drought but Clear Creek and Country Place don't have 4 inch cracks in their fairways. I've been reading these consistently bad reviews since the pandemic and the mgmt responses have been the same for years. They just apologize for the conditions and say that they strive for a 5 star experience but yet nothing changes. I wish they could sell it to someone who will put some money into it. Just apologizing and doing nothing just makes it worse. My son plays golf for one of the local high schools and the team considers southwyck a joke and they never play it. All we can do as locals is continue to leave poor reviews and hope something changes.
