Southwyck Golf Club
About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Following the White Ball Around
The course condition is rough, with too much Dallisgrass and King Ranch Blue-stem (I think) around the fairways and tee boxes, along with bluegrass on the greens. One putt was heading for the cup and was diverted due to a small bluegrass patch. Should we penalize the green's keeper or the player? There were lot's of lumps and bumps along the front nine especially. Some of the tee-boxes need moisture and grass growth too. Aeration service might help the situation along with more water, weeds control and bermudagrass seeding.
I've been playing off the regular men's tees lately and having more fun. I did not hit practice balls before I started, and gave myself a couple of mulligans to even the score with the wind and course conditions. I was just 6 over par this day, and had fun despite the situation. Age 62.
Bumpy Fairways
Fun and reasonably priced course. You pay for what you get and those fairways were bumpy. Wouldn’t recommend a partner riding along unless they were playing.
SouthWyck
Staff was friendly, and also the fellow golfers there at the time as well were very friendly… the only things I would note are the lack of headstones with the hole numbers on them, as well as the greens were a bit rough but not that bad overall. I definitely will be back!
Thank you for highlighting our friendly staff and fellow golfers, and for your feedback on our signs and greens. We're glad to hear you'll be back and we'll look into making those improvements!
Good overall
I rayed this course a good value because of the discounts I get on Golf Now app. The tee boxes could use some work. The course is mowed well. The greens are good for not being spring yet. I love the layout. The course is a little dry and bumpy. I would recommend the course to friends. Overall a good time.
OK layout BUT it ends there….
I played the Wyck yesterday and it was definitely an experience. I played with my son who is a beginner and I noticed that the tee times were mostly available in the pm meaning we would be under pressure so I gave it a try. I found out very quickly why the tee times were available.
I’ve played on some real cow pastures over my golfing career but this course takes my number one rating for horrific fairways. It’s really insulting to golf courses everywhere to even consider these things “fairways” they resemble much more of the lunar landscape than anything else. I’m really not joking, riding along in the golf cart, bouncing around like crazy, golf clubs clamoring in the back made for less than a relaxing experience.
Greens were very inconsistent with many bald spots and are just in bad shape. At maybe half the price it might be good practice course but even then I’m not too sure. It’s really a shame too because I believe the course has a pretty interesting layout and at some point must have been a decent golf course. The practice area looks very municipal park as well with turf mats, etc..
I would urge you to find another option, and if not wear a back brace.
Bad, but better than expected.
It is in very poor condition. The back nine is a little better than the front nine. However, I must admit that the golf course was slightly better than the last time I played.
It's hard to understand why the course is so beaten up when lots of people keep playing and paying.
Marginally Better
But still one of the worst courses in Houston. Grass just grows wild, fairways are bumpy and horrible and the greens are bad. I don't think they have punched this course in years and forget about over seeding. The only positives are the staff is friendly and I only paid $20 but that is like putting lipstick on a pig.
We're sorry to hear about the course conditions and appreciate your detailed feedback; we're working on improvements and maintenance to address these issues. Thank you for letting us know, and we're glad you still had fun playing our course.
