About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Course was in great shape, fairways are not flat you might have lies that are below or above feet which is great for me because I get to use all my skills. Hailey front desk girl was great and friendly. Missed my tee time but she worked it out for me to get on and play.

Improvements in progress.
Southwyck is doing a great job on trying to promote safety during this pandemic. Also, cutting down the weeds and filling in the bunkers with grass really enhances the course appearance.

Played slow.
Teed off at 120 and by 530 had made only 14. No Marshall. Only a cart girl

Nice course, Great value
Great value, course was in nice shape. Doing a bunker reclamation but never effects play. Staff and other golfers very friendly.

Great course
The course is great but there are quite a few ground under repair areas .... sometimes a free drop is nice though.
Overall a great course and I would recommend to anyone.
Don't want to follow a scramble
The pro shop explained that the scramble would start on the back nine and we would play the front nine. By the time they got to the front nine, we would be on the back. Wrong. It was a scramble for all 18 holes. Had a 12:15, teed off about 15 minutes late - not bad. But after 5 hours and only 16 holes, it got dark so I left and went home. Nice course, but still under construction on bunkers. Very friendly employees.

If the course is to enforce reasonable speed of play, marshal(s) should know what to do. Today's had no idea.

It shouldn't take 5 hours to play a round of golf.

The challenge draws me
Cutting dogleg corners will bite you. They let the fescue and the rough grow, if you find your ball it will be held up. This place is like playing a British Open links course. The greens are improving. The traps are being sodded over. Tough par three holes. Good value.

Grass bunkers
Love to see that the sand traps are being converted to grass bunkers. Course is in good condition and from the looks of it the grounds crew are working hard to getting it even better..

Surprise
Has been months since I wanted to set foot on this course.
Last time I played, greens were have dirt and weeds with no chance of making a three foot put. To my surprise, most of the greens were in good shape and void of weed!!though they were a little slow but consistent. Other courses in the area have better greens but there has been great improvement.
The fairways are still bumpy but has grass and playable. Rough is inconsistent and not cut. This hasn’t change since I been play Southwyck-over 20 years.
The biggest renovation going on is to the sand traps. They well be no more from what I can see. All bunkers may be gone by years end.
Fix the bumps in the fairways and maybe leave a few sand traps to make the course interesting or at least grass bunkers.
Hope they continue making improvements???

I remember this course being better...
The pace of place was slow and there were some inconsiderate golfers cutting ahead of people and making the back up even worse, but that isn’t the course (maybe the Marshall’s) fault. It was an absolutely beautiful day so everyone was out playing. I figured it might be slow, but not 3 hours and 40 minutes for 15 holes. I took my wife and mother and law and raved about how open this course was and how they were not very likely to lose balls. I was very mistaken. The rough was so patchy, thick and dying that you could lose your ball one foot off the fairway. I used to like how the hills were rolling and beautiful, one of the few places around Houston that there are some slight elevation changes and uneven lies. BUT now, there course has so many bumps and holes that you almost NEED to keep the car on the path unless you want to be jarred all over the place. There was a lot of construction/renovation being done on all of the bunkers and the greens were pretty scuffed up. It was not the course it used to be. And it was not worth the cost unfortunately.
