Nice links course
Excellent staff. Very good course definitely worth a round
Not good
Tee boxes were very poor condition not one bit had a flat section.
Fairways were really good condition
Greens but hit or miss mostly ok but there was a few that were patches of dirt like weedkiller
Staff I feel were poor didn’t listen just forced you out on course, was told couldn’t use practice area then ushered out to tee and told to not play through anyone now this was due to comp going on that I found acceptable.
Unfortunately not well posted were the tee boxes are thankfully there were a couple of members to point in the right direction.
All in all ok fairways and greens but let down with everything else.
Outstanding
What a great golf course. Played with my fellow golfer both off 10. Found it very challenging and had to adapt after a few holes 😬. Anything slightly off line and then it’s goodbye ball. Definitely a course that you need to play clever. We both travel all over and it’s definitely up there with 1 of the best. Price wise and conditions fantastic. Around the corner you can get a beer and something to eat. Will definitely be back soon
Southport Golf Links
Lovely, friendly woman on the counter . Course ingood condition,, especially the greens. Some interesting holes and nice and flat. Good learning course , but perhaps a bit easy for the better golfers
Great value for money
Friendly helpful lady behind the desk welcomed us to the world’s oldest municipal. Course in good condition and greens ran well ( don’t be fooled by the practice putting green).
Tricky course in a strong cross wind as all holes very straight with thick deep rough both sides. Take plenty of balls.
Some unusual kidney shaped greens.
Great value for money overall and the only downside was a slow fourball holding everybody up. But we skipped a couple of holes (easily done as there are adjacent holes) to get ahead of the miscreants.
Would recommend. Well done Sefton Council who operate this course.
Hidden Gem
A great public course on Englands' golf coast.
Drive straight, or work your way round.😄
Nice course with affordable pricing
Good little course and is beautiful in the summer but can be hit or miss, sometimes.
Some greens need some love and fairways can be a bit long but it depends when you go and they aren't always in tip top shape
Lovely to play on nonetheless
Daisy meadow
Fairway full of daisy’s can’t spot your ball until about five foot away and sometimes just walk past it . But the greens where very good
16 temporary greens
16 Temporary greens in Mid may is a joke. What's even more of a joke is the fact it was not mentioned at all on Golf Now when booking & paying, it was only mentioned after we had checked in at the pay hut.
The 16 greens were in perfect playing condition as well. Completley unnecessary for them to be closed.
Ridiculous.
Played 9 holes & left.
Improving slowly
Due to being council run (Sefton) all too often projects get started but not finished due to the staff on the course just being general grass cutters who also work at other council parks. There is still a lot of unkempt areas and when they do tackle them most of the chopped down bushes, trees etc just get dumped to one side.
One area of big improvement is the greens, really getting good & consistent these days.
Overall, you have to remember it's a municipal and nowhere near the standard of private courses but the prices reflect this (£21 on a weekend is very reasonable)
Good Value.
Good Value course. Kept in decent condition. Lots of small stream water hazards. Playing proper tee and greens.
Only note was as a first timer its easy to play holes out of Sequence, they could do with more signage and distance markers.
Great course
Very clean and clear, perfect for anyone who wants to do 18 holes.
Good value for money
This is a challenging course in the wind with Par 4’s playing more like Par 5’s. The front nine is varied and interesting with the back 9 from holes 12 to 17 a bit up and down The course was in relatively good state considering the recent weather conditions although some of the greens needed attention. I have previously played this course in the summer and it plays more to its Par. On the whole great value for money and an enjoyable round. I will visit again
Goose Shizzle
Thousands of Geese have decided that they live on this course now- the back 9 is covered in Goose poo!
Good course just lacking a little maintenance
Council run and greens and fairways cut but rough gets out of hand quickly. Go offline and you’ll be lucky to find you ball. Hard test in the wind.
All that said I always enjoy playing here and it’s good value.
Poorly Maintained Greens, Played Better Municipals
Most of the courses I play are municipal courses, mainly for cost and being a high handicapper. But I have played much better municipal courses than this around Merseyside.
The greens were like a marsh, you put your foot on it and it sunk with water filling up around your golf shoes. Some greens had clearly not been maintained for some time, as there were patches with no grass whatsoever. One hole, had patches with no grass where the soil had dried up and cracked, which was not a playable condition to be expected on a green.
If you use the slope rating to determine the difficulty of a course, it is certainly significantly more challenging than a 118 slope rating, but for the wrong reasons.
The course routing and layout was confusing, it could have used some more signage, there are some but more could be needed as there were forks in the paths with no indication of which way to go. There was one hole in particular where we were unsure if we were hitting towards the correct flag, the map on the scorecard didn't really help since the flag we were unsure of was virtually on the fairway next to us. Maybe putting golf numbers on the flags might help?
The main positive factor of the course is that the fairway and the rough are clearly defined, which is not something I see often with municipal courses.
It was a real shame because I was really looking forward to playing a municipal links golf course for the first time, it left me bitterly disappointed.
