The Club at Los Rios
About
The Club at Los Rios opened in the early 1970s with a Don January and Billy Martindale design that takes advantage of eight small ponds and a creek that winds through the layout.
Water is in play on over half of the holes, including the opening 485-yard par 5 that features two ponds in play off the tee, and another fronting the green.
Two very difficult holes stand out on this narrow, shot-maker’s course. No. 7 goes 431 yards but allows for a huge tee shot with a generous fairway, which will definitely help on the dicey approach over the creek into a shallow green. On the par 5 No. 14, water crosses the fairway three times from the back tees.
Getting there : From I-75 north, take Plano Pkwy. east until it dead ends at Los Rios Blvd. Turn left onto Los Rios Blvd. And continue on for 1 mile to Country Club Dr. Turn right and drive a short distance to the course–look for the entrance on the right side of the street.

Good deal for the money
The greens where very hard,no bite.Lots of water hazards ,some holes are very challenging .
Ok Course
Course was in decent shape, but there was no beverage cart service and no true grill. Staff made a point to to tell us to speed up but failed to realize the group of 12 (3 Foursomes) in front of us were slowing down the entire course.
Ok Course, not so friendly Staff
Course was in pretty good shape. No cart girl or cart service. Staff was a bit rude when they decided to send the Pro shop employee to our 4some to ask us to pick up speed of play, but we were booked behind a group of 12 (3 groups of 4) that was slowing the entire course.
great prices
played a round of golf with three buddies for under 95.00 with carts. not sure if that was winter rates or not. but well worth it to play the course. will go back once spring has arrived & more grass in the fairways.
los rios
course is ok, grwwns still brown. makes it a lil hard to guage distance
people are very friendly
i shot 93 ave for me
they said grass should turn green in march, that will make it play better
Course needs a lot of work
Course was in Poor shape, barely even grass on the fairways. Hard as a rock, they were bragging about their new greens, but it seems like they forgot to water the fairways.
Many challenges,
We played in a two-sum behind a four-sum and moved along nicely.
There are several holes where you shoot over a deep gorge of water which makes the hole challenging.
The ownership is making some nice improvements to the layout.
We enjoyed our outing.
Never Pay Full Price
I have played Los Rios on numerous occasions, both during the week and weekend, and as a single and in groups. I most recently played after the greens were renovated last fall (which was much needed).
In general this course is pretty average. It's usually in pretty good condition and isn't a bad little course. However, the clubhouse is extremely out dated and it's usually pretty crowded. In the "The 19th Hole is Great For" section of this review I wish there was a "Nothing" box to check. All you'll do there is check in and microwave a hamburger you got out of the fridge when you make the turn.
You can usually find pretty decent deals for Los Rios, especially on the hot deals section of golf now during the week. The non-discounted weekend rate is triple what I would pay to play here. Depending on the time this is a $20-$25 course. Not a penny more.
Course has a mixture of different style and layouts
The owner and the Golf Pros are all very friendly. Great place to play
Well placed trees make the tee shot very important. Several long par 4's were very challenging.
Fairways were very hard, with difficult lies. Greens were very hard as well.
New Greens very nice. Staff alway's friendly.
New greens very nice. Staff alway's friendly. Good food at the turn and overall great place to play 18.
Fun course, if a bit dated
Played Los Rios on Veterans Day 2013. It is definitely different from many courses I've played. It's in far better shape than some similarly priced local courses. It's not without issues, however.
Pros: Visually pretty with very large mature oak trees being the key feature. Well-placed water hazards add challenge to several holes. Greens and fairways in good shape considering the cost.
Cons: Very near a wastewater treatment plant. Depending on the wind this can be very unpleasant on some holes. Zero bunkers on the course. Not that I like playing in the sand, but it does remove some challenge. That said, the designer seems to have used the creeks and ponds instead. Plenty of danger on many holes. There was no cart girl the day we played. The clubhouse is very dated, with more of a high class convenience store feel than an actual pro shop.
Overall it was a pleasant experience and the course does present a good amount of challenge for the average golfer. I think low handicappers will excel.
Not Bad, But....
Fair value for the price, but we played the course the day after heavy rains. Might have been more enjoyable, but the course was saturated and there was a lot of standing water especially on cart paths. Only real gripe is that golf carts are not GPS equipped. Luckily, one member of our group had a Golf Buddy range finder to help with yardage distance.
Great course !
First time playing here, it was a wonderful. really enjoy the par threes can be very deceiving for distance. Lack of sand bunkers was nice but, the water made it interesting. I'll be going back.
Easy course, wide fairways
Course has all new greens
I was very surprised at how well course condition was in compared to previous years
For the price a great deal.
This is a great golf course for new golfers. The fairways are wide open with very little water and almost no sand bunkers.
The greens are very small and but well maintained.
Improved but still Los Rios
This is the first time I have played Los Rios since they rebuilt their greens. The course was in good shape and the greens were firm and more consistent than the previous times I played. Once you figure out that the grain of the green has more influence than most of the other factors you can putt here. For the most part the grain runs from front to back, meaning your approach shots will more often than not run past the hole. For example on 18 I was about 100 yards away for my approach. I hit a choked down pitching wedge to the green (my most consistent 100 yard shot). I had a clean hit with a high ball flight, it landed on the front of the green and rolled all the way to the back of the green, despite having to roll up hill.
Still with the Golf Now discount, this is a fine course. If you keep the ball in the fairway and understand where the challenges lie a good score can be posted. If you get too aggressive, or careless, you can inflate your score in a hurry.
Potential?
Not sure where Los Rios is heading. Has the feel of a muni course and in need of a refresh from top to bottom.
Good:
Greens in great shape
Fairways and first cut in good shape
Water hazards make for a challenge.
Price (paid $35)
Bad:
On-course amenities lacking - no water, no washrooms (ports-potties only), no cart service (Friday)
Ugly:
The clubhouse hasn't been updated since '78
Tip:
The water hazards come into play much more than the GPS shows - beware!
Los Rios okay, not great
Played Los Rios a month after they began allowing play on their new greens. Greens are okay, but still transitioning and obviously they will get better as they mature. Los Rios has eliminated all of their sand traps making the course play faster and easier. I hated to see the traps removed as I really enjoyed the challenge. This course is now an "average muni" course - nice, but nothing special. I certainly would not pay the full price to play this course, but with GolfNow's great deals I will definitely be back...
