Greens in poor condition Photo submitted by djmesser on 05/14/2021
Nice course
This course is well laid out and ideal for those who have not played for a while to get confidence back.
Cannock golf course
Played here first day after re opening and the course wasn’t in very good condition at all tees were full of sand and bumpy the greens were all patchy with dead bits of grass all over them but it was nice to get a game .
Course closed
Travelled over 30 mins to play here after booking a tee time the previous day via Golf Now. Turned up at course only to be told it was closed due to a waterlogged course. Thanks for letting me know!!!
Winter
I understand that conditions change in the winter months but the winter greens here are farcical. There has been no attention paid to the greens and it became less enjoyable to play as we went around.
There has been far too much yardage removed to accommodate the winter greens and on some holes maybe 50 yards.
We decided to walk the rest of the course but didn’t play it correctly.
I would like to return when the greens open and some attention has been paid to the course.
The course itself is very forgiving with plenty of room for error and I would be willing to give it another chance but only in better conditions.
Very disappointed.
Review Temp greens
Temp Greens need to be utilised this time of year, I completely understand that. But their short positioning and often on steep slopes along with general condition is very poor.
A course for Summer only
The course layout is very testing, it’s
very much about positional play, reading undulating greens gives the player plenty to think about .
The negatives are poorly maintained bunkers. The poor drainage conditions especially from September to late April.
This was clearly evident yesterday the 29th October 2020 which was like a mud bath worm casts every 12 inches on every fairway caking every players shoes clubs and trolleys caking the wheels 1 inch thick of mud every 100yards, I cleaned my trolley and shoes 36 times during the round. So my advice to all future players is play from May to late September only. This course resembles another course Calderfields near Walsall the difference now is a superb course investment transformed the course.
Cannock Wood , would be in the same league if the same was undertaken there. Until then pick your time of year to play!
Municipal standard
The course is not overly taxing and played ok. However lacks waymarkers on many holes and greens not in great shape. Enjoyable round but shan't bother again. (Very hard to find as well. Google maps has you 1/2 a mile away on a housing estate)
Poor course
First & last time I will play this course! Every hole was on temporary greens when there was absolutely no reason for it, not particularly wet. Temporary greens were dreadful so this was not a true test of golf. Dog walkers all over the course so didn’t really enjoy the game!!
Decent for a municipal course
Pros
- good value for money
- short/medium length holes (good for casual/beginner golfers)
- free parking
- greens were in good condition (October)
Cons
- no real on site amenities
- no proper practice area
- dog walkers in and around fairways (very frustrating but happens on municipal. I hit one of few cracking tee shots on a par 3 and a dog ran off with my ball)
- lacking any features / a plain course
- not kept to the standards of a private course
All in all decent for £17.00. Enjoyed it and would return again in the future but won’t rush back.
I actually went over on my ankle playing today, due to a hole in the ground near the 10th green.
If you’re considering it and haven’t played it, it’s a decent course for the money.
Awkward pins
Well if your game is all about putting then this at the moment is your course the pins were all on a bad downslope and fast , the third was probably the worst , if you put your wedge on the green past the pin then you will end up back off the free no matter how hard you hit it , it will be back off the green but apart from the greens the course is a good test , if you haven’t played it before it’s one of the better council courses.
