Narrow tree-lined fairways and a creek which you often encounter make Lackland AFB's Gateway Hills Golf Course a fun round. The ninth hole, playing up a steep hill is a real experience as is the elevated green on 18. If you have a friend who is in the military and can get on, Gateway Hills Golf Course a worthwhile option with well manicured greens.
Gateway Hills Golf Course is laid out on 200 acres featuring extreme elevation changes overlooking San Antonio. The golf course meanders 6,900 yards from the back tees with many strategically located bunkers and a host of oak and mesquite trees. Course is challenging and enjoyable.
Course layout is challenging yet enjoyable. My friends liked the greens ,they were lush And in fantastic shape.
Course has unique hole layouts
Greens in great condition. Nice elevated 1st tee box. Some blind tee boxes, so a little dangerous. Old carts, no ball washer or gps, so bring your own. Military base. Need military I.d. or clubhouse has to issue you a pass. They did not the day I made the reservation. Luckily arrived an hour early and had to wait for clubhouse to send email to gate entrance. Warning about this on golf now does not appear until after you pay. I paid Thursday for Friday..only negative.
Greens are lush.
The course was in great shape the greens were amazing. Staff is very friendly and helpful. It was a very friendly atmosphere .
Rushed for no reason
Checked in an hour before T-time to hit practice balls, The check-in/ starter (Paul) seemed a bit grumpy. He told me twice, "Don;t start until I call you." OK, got it. So less than 15 minutes into hitting a large bucket he calls me on the sound system along with my partner to the No.1 tee box immediately. Then again within 30 seconds of the first notification. {Someone's hair was on fire?} Essentially, we were prevented from warming up prior to our round- As I was at the first tee box , Paul calls me inside to the starter counter, I go from the 1st tee-box to the door and he pokes his head out and tells me "you can go" . Wow, What's the hurry, pushing us out 30 minutes earlier than our Tee time, without being able to hit balls when no one was behind us waiting- The course greens were soaked, slow and needed to be cut, The fairways were dried out with numerous leaks in the sprinkler system which caused "pools of standing water" and" sizeable mud-holes" caused by carts intentionally driving thru flooded area's. This course needs a lot of work-Need to hire more grounds crew to work on the sprinkler system and to remove the thick clover and weeds surrounding the greens. Maybe talk to the inside help and discuss what customer service is include that knowledge when interacting with paying customers. Safe to say, we won't be back anytime soon.
Could be better
I don’t know why they’re letting this wonderful course go to the dogs. So many water leaks....number 10 fairway creek still in poor condition...... many trees need to be trimmed....I still love this course.....Please take much better care .
Government quality
The cost of the course definitely indicates the quality. A lot of the course is covered in leaves and sticks. I think the time of the year I played was just bad timing. Will give them another shot.
It’s good
If your local this is. a great course. Fairways are a bit crazy but the greens are excellent.
Twilight it’s worth it
We had a good time. The course is under maintenance on hole 3. T box moved up from a par 5 to par 4. All the greens were very well kept. The fairways like a cow pasture. Onside ring the fire If the sun/heat the course looks great. Recommend. Brandon at the club house super cool.

Read the Tee time policy
For anyone interested in this course. Take the time to review all the small print and golf course policies. My friend and I purchased a hot deal tee time since we were in San Antonio over the weekend. We purchased the tee time at the last minute and failed to adhere to the tee time policy of the 24 hours notification at the golf course. Needless to say we didn’t get to play and lost out on the money for the tee times. It would be great if Golfnow would highlight the policy for playing this course, so others don’t waste their time and money.
Good Greens
Course is not well maintained. Fairways lack adequate grass. Second cut is non-existent. Tee boxes are a mixed bag of poor to fair. Greens are in fairly good shape. Cart paths need substantial work/ repair. Staff is friendly and accommodating. Given the state of the course overall, the Golf Now rate is too high.

Mile high drop to fairways. Love those !! fun course
Another Round
As a member at the course, we usually play on saturdays and sundays. Good layout, pace of play usually is quick. Course has declined a little but sill an excellent course to play. Staff is very friendly.
