Looking across the 3rd green to the 1st fairway Photo submitted by t2074115528 on 05/31/2023
Great course!
First time I have played at Gatton Manor and I will be back. It was a very cold start to the day with the first fairway covered in frost but the sun came out and soon thawed everything out. The course itself has a lovely layout and is very picturesque. A combination of water and tree lined fairways leading into tight greens makes this a challenging course but one that is a pleasure to play. The course was undergoing annual maintenance which meant some greens and tees were not in good condition. Maybe the club should considered reduced fees during the maintenance window. Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable round of golf on a lovely little course. I will be back.
Great value for money
Lovely course, lots of variety, some cracking holes. Greens v good for time of year. Bunkers terrible - thick muddy sand - but we had lots of rain this week so forgivable. Would defined recommend this course.
A great first experience
A great day out on the golf course. First thing I’d say was just how helpful and friendly the staff were. It really helped make a great start to the day. Seemed to really care about the customers which was great to see.
Course was challenging but accessibly so. Well looked after. It’s a very beautiful course with plenty of obstacles and water traps to up the difficulty level.
Enjoyable Round
The reviews I'd read on this course were a little mixed but I found this a solid mature course with some very interesting holes.
It could do with some more attention around the tees and greens, the buggy paths are a bit of an eye sore but those are the distractions from what is a pretty beautiful location, attractive and some challenging holes.
It was pretty busy the day we played and I am sure that was because of the offers they have on at the time of writing this review. It would have been nice if the halfway house was open. We were warned so, enjoyed a tasty bacon roll and coffee before heading out. Still the opportunity to get a snack at half way would have been welcome. Yes there is a virus but social distancing can be applied and there seemed the opportunity for plenty of business.
Overall we really enjoyed our visit. A tidy here and there, some course care and this would be a top place to play however if they invested more the prices would definitely rise so the value for money is good value.
Great course
The course was in good condition and would play again. The day/time we played it was very quiet so no issue with the pace of play.. Cannot comment on the amenities as these were not used.
Gatton Manor
Excellent course, nicely laid out, in good condition. Very friendly and welcoming staff, excellent food, overall simply great! The only downside for us was it was quite a trek to get there, nevertheless we will be going back!
Fantastic couple of days
We were informed of the bunkers being GUR, but due to the past few months it was of no surprise.
The course was in fantastic condition and the greens, oh the greens, were lightning fast. A real test of course management and your ability to shape shots is a must. All the staff and I mean everyone made you feel extremely welcome. The food was of a good quality and service was spot on. Members were engaging and only to keen to take time to answer questions you had.
A real gem, we decided almost immediately that this would be an annual event.
Rooms were clean and comfortable, bathroom spotless, tea and coffee supplied.
Don’t be put off......
The club house might be a bit tired and need upgrading, but the course is great fun, particularly for mid-handicappers, it played at a decent pace on a busy Saturday, the greens and tees were OK, not great, but could be forgiven for me because the course layout is particularly interesting and enjoyable. Don’t be put off by any comments about a tired clubhouse - the food is really good, and of course You can get a beer, so all good. Would definitely recommend and play again - good value tee slots available via golf now
A generally poor experience
Similar to others, this course looks like it used to be decent but is now almost post apocalyptic. Like a course used to be here, but has been left to the wild.
The pace was slow, the conditions worse and we won’t be back
Won’t be back - plenty of other options in the area
Played here as a 1 ball on Sunday of bank holiday weekend.
Booked an early morning tee time (£35.00 mins), and it was the worst round of golf I’ve ever had.
First impressions are poor - there are no nets to warm up in, and the driving range is closed, so no chance of practicing a few swings before teeing off.
Onto the actual course. I actually abandoned play after hole 11 - the pace of play in front wasn’t worth the wait given the shocking condition of the course. Tee boxes were uneven and had more sod than turf, some bunkers were completely overgrown with weeds and in some cases half the green was unplayable.
It’s a shame really - at £30+ you really expect a decent level of condition for this time of year. I won’t be back - no redeeming features.
The course was excellent
The course was in lovely condition, some difficult holes but overall very good.
A Great Course in Decline
Course is good but currently in poor condition. Tee boxes in need of water and maintenance, fairway OK bearing in mind the dry weather, grass growing in the bunkers and large brown patches on some greens. (Disease / water issues?)
It is going to take a lot of work to return it back to the quality course that I have enjoyed playing in the past.
Gatton on the hottest day of the year
The course played very well considering the conditions.
Had to treat bunkers as GUR due to lack of attention
and no rakes. The greens are tricky.
However, very disappointed at complete lack of some sort of buggy drinks/ food service given the heat on the day.
On the whole an enjoyable round.
Could be very nice...
Picturesque course. I am sure it used to be a lovely course but appeared to be need of a lot of care. Greens patchy. Fairways in a bad state in a number of areas. Not worth £30 plus. With some attention could be a top course.
Needs attention
Haven’t played this course for a few years and was disappointed with the condition. The greens were good but everything else needed work. The fairways, tees and the fringe around the greens were in a poor state. If you landed just off the green you were guaranteed a bare lie. I know bunkers can’t be raked at the moment but the condition of them was awful,, so hard you may as well be playing off concrete.
The pace of play was also slow, we were a four ball walking and we had to wait on every shot. All this said I haven’t given up entirely on this course. It’s in a lovely location and I know it used to be a good track so it can be again, it just needs a bit of tlc.
We had the same experience. The course isn’t worth visiting now until they seriously get their act together.
Also the club reply is weird. People arrive late all the time - life happens this is golf not surgery. If they fitted the customer in what is the problem?
Mr Longman, you arrived 30 minutes late for a 1 ball booking on a very busy weekend!
You booked as part of a HOT DEAL promotion on Golf Now and as such would have been playing with 3 other players. We accommodated you at no charge even though it cost us a Sunday morning tee time to do this. The course was busy and I'm sure most golfers would accept that a 1 ball is likely to experience slow play on a Sunday morning, but all greens are playing extremely well and in great condition. Our staff told you that bunkers were GUR and refurbishment was commencing on Tuesday 1st. (as per our website). Its a very unfair review indeed.
