Average at best
Not the best greeting when we arrived. Not the best start. Car park is far too small for what they offer as a whole. Tee boxes were either long grass or nothing and very uneven. The fairways were good for this time of year and the greens were ok too.
Not great signage on the course to indicate what way to go to the next whole. Kind of a guessing game.
Can see the course is being developed but I wouldn’t say it was worth the money I paid for the round.
A lot better than the last time I played, here and can see work is starting to be done on the course which had been neglected previously. .No hold ups and the staff very friendly.
Improved so much !!
Played again this weekend. Greens , fairways, bunkers in great condition. Tee boxes you can see work is ongoing but does not affect your round. Great breakfast after enjoyed by all 4 of us. Nice you can use range so close to first tee. New buggies are cool as well .
Newbe
Played this course a long time ago fairway were ok second cut was bad could never find your ball if you went into it as I did many a time this was my second vist brought my son along we had a good round bunkers are a lot better as well as the greens will be back again soon
Great value
Being able to book and play on A Sunday for under £40 in Essex is rare. Great value and obviously money being spent. Course played well considering lack of rain . Greens have improved , bunkers rebuilt but ongoing works, some tees need work which apparently is progressing in September. Lunch outside was great. We all had a great experience .
Worth playing
In the recent past the course was being badly neglected. But the new owner has made significant improvement. The tee boxes could do with some improvement but everything is 100% better than previous.
Definitely improving..
The new owners are certainly making progress and the course is probably the best I've seen it in several years.
It was good to play there where the bunkers were finally playable, the rough is playable and not waist high, and the greens were in good order (though 17 still needs work).
There is clearly lots going on around the course and if the rate of improvements continue, Lexden Wood could become a great course once again.
Finally an owner who seems to get what needs to be done - investment in the course. Fingers crossed it continues.
Fantastic and picturesque course!
Fantastic course! Layout is really interesting with some undulations and turns to play around. Course is in fantastic condition. I love the new bunkers which were a treat to play out from. Greens in good shape and clear that the tee boxes have had a lot of work go into them. Range very good too! Would really recommend to anyone thinking of playing!
Bad
Where to start…
Greens were atrocious, burnt and long grass similar to fairway length.
Fairways were rock hard as if never watered - might explain the multiple broken sprinkler heads we came across.
Layout bizarre, long walks between multiple holes - 18th hole about 5-10 minute walk from the club house who knew this was a thing?
Recent improvement under new owners ?
Myself and friend play Lexden wood every week on the same day at the same time as a little annual competition between the 2 of us so I have at least 2 years knowledge of this course. Recently it has been taken over and the improvement is starting to show , the course maintenance has improved dramatically and new bunkers are under construction on all holes that are both tougher to get out of and more solidly built than previously. The course is almost split into 3 sections holes 1-5 are good settling holes with straight fairways with a par 3 in the middle, avoid the bunker and tree !! 6 is a lovely downhill dog leg right leading to section 2 , 7-9 with a tricky double water on 8 .3rd section under the railway bridge to another long downhill on 10 before another flat dog leg right , 11-12 back uphill before 13 which is uphill drive and down hill approach trying to avoid going over the green . Then back to 2nd section to complete the round ,hole 14 is deceiving especially into the wind !! Make sure you take enough club to clear the water on this par 3 !! 15-18 great holes as long as you stay out of the tough grass flanking the fairways which hamper your approach . The greens are in good condition mostly but still a couple need some work to run true but I'm guessing the new owners are doing this as part of the remodeling which is ongoing . Decent price for a round with good food and drink in the clubhouse and a driving range on site . A few of the regular groups we encounter weekly are not too keen on letting you play through but will eventually after waiting on a few tee boxes for them but never had any issues or arguments etc .I'm only a recreational player who's been playing about 3 years in total , I'm a 24.7 handicap and my Average for course over 60 rounds is 103.4 with a low of 96 and high of 115 , course plays different according to wind direction and weather obviously so consistently changing. Would recommend trying Lexden Wood for sure . And Gav if you are reading this....21-2 try harder hahaha !!!
Great value weekend golf
Played again and what can I say . Can’t think of many course you can warm up on a range 20 metres from the 1st Tee. A lot of money spent on greens which were all great apart from one under renovation. Bunkers had new sand and the robotic mowers on the first 5 holes doing a great job. Great fun course. Tight but the rough well maintained so gives you a chance. Killer 8th hole with deep bunker and the par5 ninth even more difficult with 2 new pot bunkers.Good to see marshals out moving play along . Great food and played crazy golf after which was fun
Getting so much better
Everytime I visit it is improving . discounted fee reflects work but does not affect your round. Bunkers will be amazing when finished.
Under Maintenance
Wasn’t informed course was under going maintenance when we booked,
Major upgrade to the bunker all freshly built, No bunkers have sand in at the moment just started filling bunkers on hole 1 when we played.
Having landscapers work while you’re approaching the greens off putting.
Also having major upgrade all the pipes to the sprinklers around the green more workers on the course.
Greens not in great shape yet awaiting the sprinklers to be in play so the green keepers can work there magic.
Green keepers staff have tackled the large areas of overgrowth holes in better shape.
Tee boxes in desperate need of some TLC can’t help but feel this a sprinkler issue too.
This course in a rebuild stage but price isn’t reflected.
Returning frequent player.
I’ve played this course over 20 times over the last couple of years as it was my local and very fairly priced. It provides a really solid challenge so all levels without being too punishing. there are some challenging holes here. It’s struggled to reach good quality greens and was looking tired in places.
That being said I hadn’t played here since last summer and am thrilled to see the rejuvenation that’s underway is really promising to see. Lots of defunked bunkers have been re-dug and the fairways are now looking much much better. It will take a while for the greens to come on. But even they are a drastic improvement on where they were only a year ago.
Overall this is a great varied course and well worth playing if your local.
I wouldn’t pay full price yet
The Course is having some major work done. All of the bunkers have been rebuilt, but yet to have sand. The old bunkers are still in play, but you can’t play them due to debris and growth of weeds. The greens are bare and patches, but again in time I believe there will be good. I wouldn’t pay for price for this course yet, but in time I believe it will be worth it.
