Bargain price golf
We booked to play here as our club was closed due to flooding. Having played here before we knew what to expect. We had a friendly welcome from the clubhouse staff when having a coffee before golf. Helpful pro shop staff too. The course played very well even though conditions were very wet. Enjoyed a nice beer after and the delayed video camera on the 18th green is a great idea, enabling you to watch your approaches and putts was the cherry on The cake. All this for £21 on a Sunday, when everywhere else charges at least £30-£35. Thank you Panshanger!
Would highly recommend
Course muddy, affected by recent rains
The course is basically a good one but the recent weather has made some of the holes very muddy and the ground is heavy. We have played previously in the summer when the course and its surroundings were beautiful so hope with good weather the course returns to its best.
Avoid (during the winter)
Played this course in the summer and was enjoyable. October didn’t see loads of rainfall and other courses I play on have been fine. But the first hole was unplayable. The greens all the way round were slow, uneven and terrible. No one bothers to repair pitch marks. I even saw someone in front of me standing there bag on the green while they were putting.
The top part of the course was slightly less muddy but I came off the course struggling to push my trolley (which should be banned for the winter), and then no facility to clean shoes or a trolley
Fairways were far too long (probably as they can’t mow them), and balls were lost when hit onto the fairway.
Awful value for money - certainly during the winter….AVOID
Dissapointing
I use to play this course occasionally when I was learning to play 30 odd years ago. My nearest course Stevenage (our house borders this course) was an excellent design by John Jacobs. People used to camp overnight in the car park to get a tee time. The condition was always a problem and Panshanger another municipal pay and play was always in better condition although not as interesting. It was therefore I was looking forward to trying Panshanger again. Unfortunately I nearly walked off after the first hole. Although I would adjudge that we haven't had exceptional rain even though it was late in October. The first was unplayable due to the cloying mud, the fairways were at least 2inches thick possibly because it was too muddy to get a mower on them. The conditions improved slightly as we ventured higher up but it was a constant struggle to locate your ball even on the centre of the fairway due to the leaves which tend to be a problem on most courses at this time of year. Actually I played very well but pushing a trolley became very difficult due go the wheels picking up excessive mud and leaves. I have never come off any course in a more muddy state. The course lacked sufficient distance markers and signage to direct yourself from green to the next tee. All in all a disappointing experience and one I will not be returning to in the future. If you do decide to try the course do this in the summer.
Buggies ??
Played Saturday the 12th with buggies which in my opinion shouldn’t have been allowed got stuck on the fairways on at least half a dozen times and this messed up the fairways even more.
Nice course but maybe a bit of common sense by the golf shop would keep the course in better condition.
Unbelievable value
You wont find better value for money anywhere in the UK. Great condition and variety of hole layout
Shocking Greens and tee boxes
Overgrown slow greens, with evidence of uncorrected damage resulting in uneven rolls. Tee boxes were littered with divots and bald patches as most had large areas of grass missing. Pace of play was incredibly slow with mostly beginners on the course. I would recommend for someone new to the game and it represents VFM for this demographic, however, for a serious golfer I would avoid.
Very hilly
Great course, looked after, didn’t realise how hilly it is, as someone who’s not ‘fit’ was a struggle getting up some hills but that’s not a negative on the course itself, was different course to what I’m used to as it’s also very narrow and plenty trees, lots of high slopes and banks to which changes your thinking/playing but that’s a good thing, hit my average total so was happy with that being first time here.
Extremely slow play
Extremely slow play. Was stuck behind several groups of 4 - total round was over 6 hours.
Great test
Great course layout with some tricky pin positions. Fairly flat front 9 with a more hilly back 9.
Greens and Fairways in Great Condition
Course is in great condition , couple of areas of minor damage that need to be fixed but generally very good. The only real issue is with the bunkers which are in need of some TLC. Undefined rough edges, areas of sand outside the bunkers where the raking machine drives in / out, really they are in need of a proper raking by ground staff as most are very firm (like concrete under a small layer of sand) , and sone of them have the lining damaged / visible
Buggies rented this time and the GPS was very good and configured to avoid drivers getting too close to greens.
All in a great course and excellent value for money in the afternoons
Lovely design
You can see the care that has gone into the design of course. Nick Faldo’s layout is great. However, the greens were covered in weeds, and the pace of play behind the seniors team was awful
Well set up course but greens lack attention
Have played the course many times over the years. Well set up and normally reasonably looked after. Just think you need to get tee boxes and especially greens in a decent state (and also bunkers). The rest should follow. That said the twilight fee represented good value for money. The early morning fee not so much. It would help if people repaired their pitch marks. Good bar and food facilities in the 19th hole
Good value public track
Course was in better condition than when i played a year ago. Greens were very slow but in reasonable condition. It's a public course so you can't compare it to private clubs but we had a good day. Some very interesting holes and as a twoball we got around in under 3 hours. I would have given it an extra mark but the pins were placed only a couple of feet on the greens .
