Hidden Treasure
Totally unpretentious, Porthpean offers a well cared for course and a friendly welcome. Recent improvements and refurbishment have raised its standing significantly and it represents very good value for money. I would recommend any golfer living or holidaying in this part of Cornwall to pay a visit.
Great day for Golf - Greens needed a little work
We arrived at the course to find plenty of parking and a warm welcome. A group of members sitting in the beer garden outside the reception greeted us as we arrived, which immediately set a friendly tone. Everyone we encountered was welcoming, and the club had a genuinely positive atmosphere.
The front nine was enjoyable, with tight fairways that encouraged a more strategic, iron-focused approach. It was well laid out and provided a solid challenge. The back nine, however, was the real highlight—offering stunning panoramic views of the coastline throughout.
There was also a par 5 under construction midway through the back nine, which looks like it will be a fantastic addition once completed.
The only downside on the day was the condition of the greens. Unfortunately, they weren’t in great shape and will likely need several weeks, if not months, to become fully playable. Out of the 18 holes, only two or three were in average condition—the 14th or 15th stood out as being decent, where we managed to get a true roll on the ball.
If the club can get the greens back to a good standard, I’d have no hesitation in rating this course a 10/10. As it stands, based on the current condition of the greens, I’d give it a 7/10.
Would I come back? Absolutely. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have no doubt the greens will be sorted in time.
Very enjoyable
Thoroughly enjoyed our round. Staff were incredibly friendly and made us feel very welcome.
Course was in good condition, considering the recent poor weather. The first nine holes are the better holes on the course, but this isn’t to say that we didn’t enjoy with the second nine. Overall felt this was a lovely course to play and wouldn’t hesitate to go back and play that again.
Always a pleasure...
Half parkland, half coastal view course with something to satisfy everyone. It's not the longest, but there are plenty of tight fairways and assorted hazards to keep even low handicappers on their toes. Greens staff have to be applauded for their obvious hard work and skill in keeping all holes - and most greens - open after what has been the most unrelenting wet winter.
A lot of work and investment is currently underway to make this beautiful spot even more of an enticing challenge. There are a number of holes vying for 'signature' status, but my favourite is probably the elevated par three 15th guarded with a card-saving, verged backdrop guarded by trees.
The clubhouse welcome is probably the friendliest and most accommodating of any golf course I've played - even compared to those received in a recent New Zealand trip where hospitality is legendary.
Shame I don't live a bit closer as I'd join in a heartbeat.
Good things coming!
I like the differences between the front and back nine’s. The front being more wood land and the front having great views on the cliff tops gives a mixture of course types. At present the club are creating some intriguing hole changes and I look forward to seeing how they evolve. I enjoy playing this course and the staff, members and other guests that I have met are extremely friendly.
Lovely views
Lovely location, some great holes. Last few holes under repair. Looking forward to return when complete
Need course planned
Absolute pleasure to play here
Despite a few heavy, shortlived showers it was an absolute pleasure to play here. The course, apart from one hole near the finish that might be due for reconstruction was in superb condition, far better than several other courses I've played in the last month or two. It also has some glorious views of St Austell Bay. Can't believe I've taken so long to decide to play here. Will have it very close to the top of my list for a round whenever I'm back in Cornwall.
Good course, good price.
Very nice greens, clearly loved and cared for as they are working on it currently, very lovely scenes on the back 9. Was extreamley windy and the front 9 was lovely and sheltered. Nice challenging course. Cant wait to see what its like after the works been completed. Will definately be coming back!
Fun round
Shortish but tricky course.....splendid views over the coastline on the back nine holes.....works on last holes not ideal but still fun.....very friendly staff and locals.....
A lovely afternoon at Porthpean
I booked through golf now and had a lovely welcome from all I met at the club, the course was in super condition and even given the work that is on going to the back 9 it’s a good test. I can’t wait to see it when the new par 5 is finished . A super course great value for money very friendly people and a good test of golf I will gladly recommend it to anyone . Thank you I look forward to returning

Lovely course and staff very friendly, welcoming and helpful.
Sadly the only disappointment was the changes currently to the couple of holes before 18th.
These holes are being reconstructed and temporary as well.
Map please
Really could have done with better directions between holes, we couldn't actually find the 16th as there were no signs after the 15th green and no map on the scorecard. Excellent location though and the first 9 were really well maintained and ajoy to play. Also congratulations to all staff they went beyond the call with everything, thank you.
Best Value for Money Course I’ve Played
Great course. First 9 a lovely parkland style course, with back 9 a bit more tricky as backs right up to the cliffs / coast. Some holes under repair / reconstruction which made it even more difficult, and was very up and down terrain on the back 9. Great course overall with lovely staff. Hand down the best value for money course i’ve played, and stunning views. Would definitely recommend for when down in Cornwall.
Fantastic course
Brilliant course, even if the weather turned on us. The views from the course were amazing and the staff were friendly and courteous.
Will definitely play again
SLOW SLOW SLOW
Desperately need a marshal....2 hours 40 mins for a front 9 on a very short course. Waiting 10 plus minutes on each tee...members playing behind us getting frustrated at the 12 players ahead of us.....spoke with the club house, and apparently this hasn't happened before, but no intention of asking the 3 4 balls to speed up. Left after 9 holes.

Excellent all round’ owners are currently improving the course which is already a gem but will shortly become a jewel by the sea. Very good service and great value for money.
A nice surprise
Really enjoyed playing here today, some lovely holes and the views were outstanding
Once they’ve tidied up the final few holes it’ll be a cracker, lucky to live local so will definitely play there again
