Lovely but not fun
Chavs and general public litter the course making noise and standing in the middle of fairways when you’re trying to take your shots. With the hills it is more of a workout than an enjoyable round of golf. Staff were great and greens were amazing but wouldn’t play again.
Slept well
Had an excellent afternoon today forgot how fit you need to be to play Royston will certainly be back again soon
One for the purists
A test of golf in the purist form. The course is situated on a piece of heathland which is very undulating and also has amazing views.I believe it is chalk based, so is playable all year round. All in all a good test of golf especially in windy conditions and is good value for money.
Great course
It is a great coarse with challenging hills and tough rough. The only down side is the lack of a functional driving range to warm up.
Review
Course condition average. Fairways poor, greens good, quirkyness 10/10 . Worth a try.
Great course very tough walking
Royston is a lovely golf course, whilst overall quite short, it is very challenging as the terrain is part of Royston Heath and therefore it always seems more uphill than down. It is certainly challenging to walk on a hot day, as it was, and advise plenty of water and breaks.
The greens on the whole are very small (perfect condition) and there are areas you need to put your ball, which as it was only the second time playing here in 25 years, and my playing partners first time, it created more hazard.
Very interesting landscape
There are a few holes with very interesting landscape which are challenging to players and also demand a lot of energy to go up and down hills. Be mindful of public hikers or local residents who are walking across the course. Overall it’s very funny to play in Royston.
A must play course
If you want a challenge this is the course to play. Every hole is different and the greens are very challenging. Must have a very good short game!!
Hilly with punitive rough but good drainage
Hilly course with punitive wispy rough that you think it would be easy to find balls in but isn't. Played after days of rain, however course dry due to hills and chalk base. Greens very fast. Busy so relatively slow. Friendly staff and members. The course is a par 5 distance from the clubhouse, but there is a car park close to 1st/18th.
Late opening, and no trolleys or buggies.
Arrived at 7:30am for a warm up and tee off at 8:10. We knew the 1st tee was some distance from the clubhouse, so wanted to arrive in plenty of time.
Someone arrived at 8:10am to the clubhouse (advertised as opening at 8am), so a late tee off was inevitable, leading to frustrated golfers who we had to jump in front of.
I also have a bad back and really needed a trolley. Only one is available for hire and it was broken. Poor show. No buggies available for hire unless you are a blue badge holder.
Shame, as it's quite a nice course and located nearby.
Half a mile from the clubhouse
The weather was miserable (like most of this year) and there weren’t many people on the course.
Royston is hilly and quirky - I don’t think I’ve played anywhere else where the guy in the pro shop said the first tee and 18th Green are a half mile hike or drive away!
The main protection for the course is the extremely tough rough - straightness is even more important than many tracks.
The greens were good as were the tee blocks - spent too much time looking for balls in the rough!
Challenging Course
Enjoyed playing the course today, had a real battle with the conditions front 9 played into wind the entire front 9 and what seemed like up hill. A real challenging front 9 especially given the conditions. Would love to play again as the course offered some interesting holes.
Great Views and Interesting Holes
Some challenging and interesting holes couples with some great views made this course a pleasure to play. A bit more homework on the layout before playing would’ve helped my score but it was still great fun. The only downside was the terrain which made for a very tough walk!
Quirky course but challenging
Royston is EXTREMELY hilly so be prepared for some steep inclines both up and down. Also, the rough was VER long so a few balls lost in the hay! Some really memorable holes and the greens were really good and consistent. I think it's a 'marmite' type of course. Some will love it. I personally didn't like it that much. However, I've rated it fairly well as the overall experience was good.
Great tee boxes and greens, shame about everything else.
First of all the plus points. The tee boxes and greens were as good as I've seen them on this course. Extremely well maintained.
Now the negatives. The rest of the course was a shambles. Fairways, if you could call them that, with weeds and wild flowers growing everywhere. More like an 'unfair way'. Then the bunkers, which ranged in consistency from a kiddies sandpit to 'oh, are we supposed to have sand in this hole in the ground'. Then we come to the the worst aspect, pace of play. Having to wait on single player, who took between 3 to 5 minutes just to decide on what club to use, and then duffed the shot anyway. People need to understand that there's a courtesy that needs to be applied when you play golf, such as, take as long as you like, just don't make others take as long as you like.
