Visitors can play Saturday mornings
Nice course. Fairly good condition. Decent pace of play.
Customer Service
The course is average, and a little overpriced for what it offers. However, the worst part is the pathetic attitude of the proprietor. He really could do with attending a crash course on customer service. I had seen reviews on this and other sites pointing at the poor attitude of the bald, middle aged gentleman who I make out to be the proprietor and didn’t quite believe some of them until a couple of recent experiences, which left me absolutely dumbfounded. You’d think he is offering customers a favour rather than selling a service.
Winter Golf
Playing full greens in good condition for time of year , soft in places but not unplayable, staff are friendly and it has a range and putting/chipping green .
Ok course, awful attitude of staff
The only reason this has a 2 is because the greens were ok..
The fairway was like playing off a Sunday league football pitch.. The tee boxes looked like they had been attacked by a pack of wild boar.
But the worst part was the man behind the till, older chap, greyish short hair.. He is quite simply the rudest person I have ever dealt with.
so, we got to the course at 6.45 ready for our 7am tee time booked through Golf Now.. The gates were closed, we got his attention and he screamed back "GATES OPEN AT 7"... nice.
Anyway, 7am came and gates opened as promised. I went into the club house and said we had a 7am tee time that is why we were surprised the gates were closed.
he said " you can't have a 7am tee time, we don't start till 7:10" (the chap next to me was off at 7.08 by the way)
I said I booked online and it gave me 7am as an option
"well it shouldn't have" barked this cretin behind the till..
I said he should check with Golf Now then as I can control it
He then just grunted..
Then tried to take my payment again, even though I had already paid and moaned about having to check the system
All in all course is very average, the greens are ok but the rest isnt great. I do appreciate its the Autumn and we have had rain but its not in a good state. But the guy who served is is a grade a c.......
Won't be heading back here in a hurry
Average quality fairways and greens
Average quality fairways and greens. The fairways were quite rough in patches and the greens were average to good. It was a shame as the course layout was very good and interesting.
Great club house, great staff, shame about the course.
Very friendly staff that obviously work hard to keep the clubhouse looking good.
Unfortunately I felt the course it self was very tough, similar in quality to some of the community/municipal courses I have played in this area. Mainly over grown grass which made it difficult to see the fairways etc. The holes were fine and offered some challenge but more effort on upkeep would really benefit the course.
Not sure I would play this course again, mainly because there are other better kept courses locally which to be fair cost less money.
The staff we did speak to were excellent, friendly and hardworking.
Could be great
Course layout starts rather simple but gets better as it goes along, with some very unique holes, especially on the back. Hidden greens all around make for good course management being a must because you can’t be sure of your approach shot being simple.
Staff didn’t seem overly friendly, but it was early on a Monday morning so maybe tired?
Fairways not much different to the rough but can still be played well. Main issue was tee box’s needing a trim!
Greens played well and first cut around them is probably the only area of the course that gets a regular decent cut, but at least it’s done well.
Could be a great little course if maintained a bit better, tee box’s let it down and fairways make the course look worse than it actually is.
Overall decent golf with some enjoyably challenging holes.
Worth a round if you fancy something different and it’s local to you. Not too sure about clubhouse. Rate is fair value for money if you get good weather conditions.
Good value for money
Course conditions were not as their best probably because of the dry summer. Many areas of improvement around the fairways. Greens were fair with a good roll. Overall is a good value for money but there are other courses in the area that will beat it fair and square.
G8
Greens v good a lot of work been/being done to improve course ..........a very enjoyable round - no complaints - ..will defo go again
b eter than expected
there are a lot on improvements being carried - it was v enjoyable much better condition thn expected fairways greens in good condition following the recent weather
OK
Excellent course with just amount of difficulty.. lots of work to improve course being carried out.
Club very friendly.. nothing to say against this venue..............will play it again shud be EVEN better when the sun shines..................
Challenging but good
Really nice staff. We played the course in pretty bad conditions. We'll come back again though. Great hazards made it pretty challenging
Much improved
I left a review below a couple of years ago saying that the place was poorly maintained and overpriced. I just wanted to update that it's now much improved.
This should be pretty much the worst time of year for course conditions, but playing today everything was fairly decent. No temporary greens and only one temporary tee for the whole 18 holes. They've also appeared to have remodelled some of the holes to make them more open and enjoyable for those that can't hit that straight. Typically I would lose 7-8 balls going round, today it was only 1.
They're also offering much more reasonable green fees for the course. I still think there are better ones to play in the area for a similar rate, but it's no longer that big a gulf. Theale is now more of a 'why not' rather than a 'do we really have to'.
improved
a .lot of work has been done since last here - trees removed opening up approaches - so fairways better - still challenging holes - in short a very nice mixture of holes for all levels........v good greens, will be coming back course condition ratings due to weather/time of year
Much improved course
We haven't played here for a couple of years but on returning today the improvement was very obvious. A great deal of hard work has gone into transforming the front 9 (probably the back as well but we only played 9!). Thoroughly enjoyed our game and will return. Very reasonable rate at £15 for 18 holes
Lucky with the weather
Absolutely hammering it down most of the morning... got to the course and hit a few balls in the range and it started to ease.
First tee - few drops of rain and for the first 3 holes. After that - rain moved away, blue skies appeared and the sun shone.
Nice course - few challenging holes, but if you can hit it straight, you won't go far wrong (but isn't that true of every course?)
Plenty of run on the fairways - pretty hard ground, but perfectly playable.
Nice course, good facilities and even if I left my A game at home, very enjoyable round of golf.
Give it a go!!
An overpriced course is now even more expensive
Theale golf club now charges £35 a round as standard at weekends. You can play for £26 after 2pm, but even that is overpriced.
I have played many courses in the Berkshire/Oxfordshire/Hampshire areas and can tell you that Theale doesn't come close to being worth that sort of money. It's a bog standard park course that is not particularly well maintained and has some horrible course design on the back 9.
Please don't spend £35 to play here . . .
