Challenging course
First thing you encounter at Rowallan is the grand entrance and scenic drive to the club house passing the historic castle.
All staff from George in the pro shop to the staff in the club and restaurant are very welcoming and helpful.
A nice touch that at sign in you are given a gift of Rowallan tees and pitch repair.
Due to the recent long spell of hot weather the tee boxes and some greens have suffered from drying out and are in need of maintenance .
This course is very long and challenging, it has 5 par 5's and a lot of bunkers , managed to get in around 8
The one thing about the course , although quite wide fairways any erratic shot off the straight will possibly lose your ball as the rough is tough.
It is quite hard to miss hit a ball and have it carry onto another fairway, this gives an idea of how wide the course is.
The course is worth a visit but be ready to accept its not in its prime condition.
Great Value
The golf course was very pleasant, some lovely looking golf holes. Great choice for people staying in Glasgow that don't want to pay big money.
Great Day out
Brilliant course, fair but tough test. Welcome outstanding and free gift of tees, marker and pitch repair tool a great touch. Staff very friendly and helpful at all times given that weather yesterday morning was horrendous. Fantastic course, outstanding value for money and attention paid by staff was first class. Will definitely be back. Thank you so much.
Potential
Challenging course, with a great layout. Staff in club shop very friendly and helpful.
Greens and fairways in good condition
Tee boxes in poor condition need a bit of work done as most of them had no grass.
Bunkers need a bit of TLC as grass growing in the middle of them and need a bit more sand.
We had a bit of rain but no problems caused by this, course was fine.
All in all I would recommend this course
Course conditions still lacking
Played today (Tuesday 3rd Aug 2021) after weeks of hot dry weather and the Ayrshire skies decided to fall a little. Previously when I have played it has been close to a bog or field like condition and never near a £25 round golf course.
Today expected better, but even with a very small amount of rain you could see and feel the place (fairways included) having standing water on it.
I have always enjoyed the challenging holes and the great layout of the course. A lovely warm welcome from the pro and a free tee, marker and pencil pack was a good touch.
Onto the course and the walkways between tees are a little unkept with tee boxes looking burnt, cracking and generally used and unappealing.
Fairways where bearish and still don’t feel or look like the turf on another park/Heath land course in the area. I understand that course take 10/15 years to bed in but this haven’t changed from when I first played it 8 years ago.
The greens, although running true and a good challenge where very patchy, some mini cored, some with burnt dark orange areas, other markings (don’t have a green finger so can’t tell you want it was) and disappointingly very slow for this time of year.
Definitely improvements in drainage since my last visit but I think standards have dropped in regards to how the place now looks.
Maybe back in another 8 years to see how it is.More value for your cash not far for there.
Great course although tee boxes very bare due to the warm weather.
Great course
Played for first time today- great layout with some smashing holes - reminded me of gleneagles pga course. Lots of well positioned bunkers and run offs on greens so need to plot your way around. Tees looked very brown but didn’t affect play in anyway . Greens were not the best I’ve played this year but were fine. Our four ball was halved so was good to settle it at the extra 19th hole. Overall great day out and great value for money. Will play again
Enjoyable day
A great, scenic course with several challenging holes although mainly flat and an easy if a very long walk.
There has been a long dry spell of weather and the course is suffering as a result, although the greens and fairways were ok ,the tees were almost bare and water is badly needed.
Signage between holes is poor and we had to ask directions at one point, so a map scorecard would be a big improvement.
We also noted that there are no waste bins anywhere on the course so there are hundreds of broken tees lying on every tee and various litter lying around .
Overall, a good experience and we all agreed that we would come back.
Avoid the bunkers
From the tee you must avoid the bunkers if you want a good score.
Fantastic layout, Condition could be better
To be honest I was a little hesitant because of earlier reviews, however do not let these review daunt your chance to play this course. The course has a fantastic layout with no two holes the same and every hole representing its own personal challenge, with 81 very well placed bunkers, I really really enjoyed this course! I am a high handicapper as well!
Having played many of the Ryder cup courses around the UK, I would say this course could compete with the likes of say Gleneagles Centenary Course, HOWEVER….the course maintenance is dreadful, the tee boxes had no grass, greens were a little slower than would be expected, however this is a plus for me as my putting is terrible! :D The fairways could also do with a bit more care and TLC.
None the less, this was a very enjoyable round I would say based on condition this is a £25 course, if they got better green staff, easily a £40 a round course maybe even £50 based on its fantastic layout and design!
Brilliant
Took my dad for father's day, we both absolutely loved it although the weather was so warm he was done in at the 14th lol. Superb course and all staff we met were fantastic. Will 100% be back, don't hesitate on whether or not to play this course, do it! You won't regret it.
Championship course
Rowallan is in excellent condition and challenging for all levels of golfers
Its a long course and you can expect to have a near 4 hour round
Fairways are wide and be careful the rough is very unforgiving, finding a ball is unlikely
Watch out for the lovely Par 3 8th taking you backdown to the castle.
The clubhouse is part of the Glasshouse restaurant and be sure to have some refreshments being a family run club the staff are exceptional
Brilliant course
Myself an 3 m8s tried this course and couldnt be happier. A tremendous golf course in brilliant condition.. my m8 even got a hole in 1 on the par 3 10th i think it was... we deff will be back
Great layout going to waste
Played today disappointed with the condition of the greens , played just before covid kicked in and course was magnificent , the layout and holes are second to none just a pity seems to be going backwards,
Pace of play terrible stuck behind a group of english guys , a 5 ball and 4 ball , had to wait on virtually every shot and they had no intention of letting us go through , we could have easily took 40 minutes of our round ,, staff and starter were outstanding no complaints
Biggest bug bare is with the booking app , we turned up as a 3 ball , and a total stranger had been put in with us , course is hard enough without having to play with a total stranger in a bounce game
No disrespect to single players
The course should be the one to oblige a playing partner to single players , as we are booking to play with our friends
Really enjoy playing here just hoping condition recovers
