Rowallan Castle
Played the golf course today in cold but sunny conditions. The course was pretty wet due to excess rain over the past few weeks but overall it is kept in a decent condition. The greens were great though.
Best Value For Money Course In Ayrshire
We booked this course through Golf Now and had it not been for this website we would never have heard of Rowallan Golf Course.
The welcome by the Pro was warm and friendly and he took time to explain that due to overnight rain the course would be rather wet.
The course was long and challenging but “rather wet” was an understatement as the majority of fairways were sodden with the result that there was absolutely no run on the ball. Despite the time of year the tees and greens were in reasonable condition although several of the greens showed signs of disease.
The layout of the course was superb with some beautifully designed holes. A few of the holes have significant walks between the green and next tee.
This course has tremendous potential but major investment is required to address the serious drainage problems.
New shoes please
Wet underfoot shoes soaked, socks and feet muddy. Trousers dirty right up to the back of my knees. Wasn’t even raining today. Course layout is great could be amazing but spoiled by underfoot conditions.
Half Price
3rd time of playing. With sucj a brilliant summer, the greens were infected. Lucky we paid half normal price.
Poor
Course was in very poor condition. No grass on tee boxes, fairways very un-tidy. Green very patchy and very very slow.
wonderful deal
2 friends from Sunderland and myself played here on Friday 13th July for an incredible £17 each amazing value for a top quality course cant fault it or the staff. This was also the first time I had booked using tee off times hassle free and will use many times in the future
This course has potential however !
Played the course for the second time on Saturday this was after a prelonged spell of dry weather. The first time of playing it was 3years ago and during that time there seems to be very little change in the condition of the course. Its fairways are in a very poor state.Sparse thick bladed grass, had to play preferred lies ! Semi rough is brutal and after that it is a lost ball.reminds of a farmer who is developing his own course. Loads of money needs to be spent on it. Its a shame as it quite a layout.Would i play it again, perhaps not.
Excellent
£18 for a round on this course, excellent value for money, course was in excellent condition considering we’ve had no rain for about a fortnight, greens a little bit slow but think this was down to the fact they didn’t want to shave them right down .Will definitely play it again.
Absolute mire
Bearing in mind that we have had a nice spell of weather, I couldn't believe how wet and boggy the course is. Fairways are in very poor condition, greens not much better and not a yardage marker in sight. It's a shame as the course layout and facilities are good and the grounds are beautiful.
True teat
Long coarse magnificent greens ....bring your 3 and 5 wood and be sure to putt well. True gem ...
Off course wasnt open other than pro shop so cant comment. Course condition was decent for this tome of year. Back nine was a bit heavy going
Its a real shame
Yes this is winter but this course is absolutely soaking, tees and greens quite good but everything in between is close to abysmal also teed off behind a group of youths playing a university tie who were extremely slow eventually teed off 20 mins late and got held up on nearly every single hole the pace of play was bordering on ridiculous especially when there was 5 of them aimless walking about every 'fairway' from the 13th someone from the club really needs to have a word with the uni's about their representatives course etiquette. The staff at the restaurant were pleasant and helpful its just a shame that the state of the course really lets it down as the location, set up, lay out, design is absolutely brilliant if only this course could sort out its drainage it would be up there as one of the best parkland courses in Ayrshire but it is a million miles away from that in its current predicament. I would only consider playing this again if I knew there was no university's playing and there had been a 3 week dry spell in Scotland so really that is highly unlikely as we struggle to go 3 days without rain and this course just can handle the rain.
I am sorry to hear about your review and experience at Rowallan Castle.
Firstly, I can only apologise about the pace of play set by the University group. We have made the organiser aware of your comments and hopefully this wont happen again in the future.
Secondly, regarding the underfoot conditions of the course. I think its fair to say that this has been one of the wettest golfing years on record. In fact, in October we recorded our wettest month since opening the course in 2010. And with November not really being a dry month, the course has had very little rest from the rain.
We are currently working on our winter maintenance programme which sees drainage projects on 6 holes already underway - with more to be installed. We are hoping this will help the course recover quicker after prolonged wet periods, and result in a better experience for all golfers here at Rowallan.
We hope you will return to Rowallan Castle Golf Club in the near future.

ROWALLAN
On arrival here unfortunately the weather was horrendous. The course was open but should have been closed. The facilities were absolutely first class, only problem was at end of our game they closed the place early & we had nowhere to change our wet clothes. We will come back another time when the weather is more favourable, as the course looks very nice & challenging. Food was excellent, friendly staff , lovely restaurant & would recommend for others to visit.
First time playing at Rowallan Castle and I must admit, it was fantastic. Quite long and challenging but was very enjoyable. Food was lovely and staff were very helpful and friendly.
Waterlogged day out
Must be the wettest course I've played. Played in Aug course completely waterlogged. I would only recommend this course in the middle of a heat wave.
Poor
The course is playing like the middle of the winter. The course is saturated and has daisies growing in the middle of fairway. In addition some greens looked infected.
Big course
Nice course, if it been wet it will stay wet. When it's dry it's a real test of golf. Love the course & would play again
Great Layout, Poor Condition
Lets start with the positives, the layout of this course is fantastic and there are some amazing holes. Unfortunately, it was in very poor condition. Most holes were very boggy (it had rained leading up to the day - but not that much).
Thank you for your review Scotgolfer7.
We hope to see you back at Rowallan when the summer arrives.
