Rancho Park Golf Course

You realize, this is a classic course, still holds up to the modern game if the greens are fast. Tree lined, dog legs, and a good amount of hilly terrain to boot. It's a real gem, that we can play it for cheap, but that comes at the cost of the pace of play and over-crowding. 5 hours is a guarantee if you tee off after 9am. And that is because LA City courses put out 6-minute foursomes. That means, there are 10 groups in an hour! That means, when an average hole is supposed to take 13.333 minutes (13.333 x 18 = 240 minutes or 4 hours), there are already 3 groups on every hole to start! And you wonder why it takes over 4.5 hours and 5 hours+ to finish 18 holes. Couple that with some serious hackers who shouldn't be here but are here because of the cheap rates, you're in for a long round. Overcrowding for the sake of cheaper rates don't make for fun golf too often. You have to get out before 8am to have any semblance of a 4 hour round.
The greens are still recovering from the punching and they are bumpy right now.
The bunkers are very good now, softer sand and not hard-packed mud like they used to be for years on end.
Fairways are OK, not great, Some spots are still hard and dry no grass or bare.

Pace of play - went of @ 7:02 finished @ 10:45. We were a foursome. Lots of dry patches in the fairways. Greens were recovering well from being punched. A few greens need some work. Bunkers were wet. Golfers do your selves a favor and fix your ball marks and divots. I realize there is a water shortage however fairways should not have bare lies.

They were running 40 minutes behind when I checked in and that went to 45 minutes by the time I finally started. Waited on almost every shot.

But I enjoyed the course and would like the return. Just going to need to find a way to golf there when it's much less crowded.

Barely managed to finish about 15 minutes after sunset.

Rancho Park was home of the LA Open for several years. Located near central LA, the course gets a lot of play, and is known to be slow. HOWEVER, my wife and I were able to get on early, played in a little over 4 hours, and enjoyed the experience thoroughly. Condition was what I expected for a public, highly used course in a large city. FUN!

Great layout. Fairways are rough. Greens above average however on the slower side. Bunkers are hard sand and not raked very well. Tee boxes in bad shape. Pace of play early was great.

One of the Great public courses in Los Angeles, well worth the $30 bucks with a cart. greens were in better overall condition than the fairways , ruff was uneven and made shots more difficult than a public golf course needs to be. No water holes on the course at all?

Rancho is a wonderful municipal golf course. When I last played Rancho it was in terrific shape. The fairways were well groomed, the greens in great shape. There is plenty of elevation changes. The only minus is the pace of play. You need to plan on at least a 5 hour round of golf.

Rancho is a great course with a lot of history. There have been many big tournaments played here not the least of which WAS the L.A. Open. In fact there is a plaque on the 18th hole dedicated to the "average golfer" placed there by Arnold Palmer who took a 12 on that Par 5. Yes play can be very slow since this must be one of the busiest golf courses in the nation situated in the heart of Los Angeles. It is challenging and needs for the people playing it to pay attention and use a lot of golf savy. I surely recommend this historic course going back to the early 1900's.

hi this course had excellent greens considering how much action it gets.
my biggest compaint was pace of play, I played a thursday mid day, and there were at least 2 groups backed up on each hole.
maybe because the combo walking and cart play, and it was hot, so the walkers were a bit slow.
I ended up only getting to play 9 holes because of slow play, but it took us almost 3 hours to do that.
I had a good time and considering it had no water hazards but lots of bunkers, it was fun!
