Absolute rip off. Do not go.
I have played St Marlo several times over the past few months. Every time I have played, the course was at least playable and in somewhat decent condition.
After our experience today, I can say it was an absolute rip off. They charged full price for a course that was in deplorable condition.
First of all, it was cart path only that slowed the pace of play. The greens had been spiked and sanded, quite badly too. This was never mentioned either in the pro shop or by the starter. The grass on the greens was nearly as long as the grass on the fairway. Many of the bunkers were unplayable with almost no sand in them. There was even one that had a bunch if debris in it - almost akin to a beaver’s den - complete with a tennis ball!
The tee boxes were badly cut up. Most times I found myself either teeing off in front or behind the blue marker just to get some level ground.
I liked this course before. I didn’t mind paying because the setting is nice. But the fact that they have the audacity to charge a premium price for something that is in worse condition than a $30 public course means I’ll not be back any time soon.
Not what it used to be
St Marlo had gone downhill. It is not well cared for. Even the grounds around the parking lot and driving range are not well kept. The layout is still good and fairways are decent. But tee boxes, traps and greens need significant improvement
Greens were aerated and sanded without any notice (by golfnow) so that was disappointing (probably why the price was reasonable). Bunkers were in bad shape and unfortunately i was in several. Apparently the course (and I assume others) took a big hit from the recent storm. Fairways were good and I love the course. Hope to be back.
The greens were in horrendous shape. Otherwise a nice layout. Everyone was friendly the greens were just a huge disappointment as they had just been punched
Would have been nice to know....
Well...made a golfnow.com tee time a day in advance...I ALWAYS check for aeration alerts...Nothing.
Get there to find that the greens were punched and sanded three days prior..making the greens all but unputtable.
Also found out that holes #14 and 15 were closed..14 due to a sinkhole which did not seem to affect play, and 15 with a flooding situation that could have easily been roped off...so we only got to play 16 holes, with the option of repeating #1 and 2, which were slammed when we stopped by to check after our round.
I really wanted to enjoy this round...but would have waited a couple of weeks had I known about the greens. Too bad that the course staff apparently did not notify golfnow.com..sad to see a nice course drop the ball on this one..it's a good layout and well-meaning staff from what I remember.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS
What a total rip-off!!! Be warned, hole #15 was closed without warning/notification. The douche in the clubhouse didn’t even care and gave a snarky response stating “it’s factored in the price”. It was cart path only on this sunny dry day— the course was NOT wet. The bunkers were atrocious and no attempt was made to repair or rake them. They must be cutting costs everywhere because the poor cart girl had to ride around in a regular golf cart with her refreshments strapped to the passenger seat. The greens were the worst part. They were sandy, aerated, bumpy, and overgrown. Of course there was no warning of aerification. Save yourselves the headache and avoid this course. St. Marlo was a premier course 8+ years ago, not anymore. I’m not sure what’s going on, but it’s a shame. I hope they can recover, but with the prices they’re charging, it’s highway robbery.
Paid to Play 17 holes
Understandable the weather can be unpredictable and damage holes, but was not notified in advanced that two holes were unable to be played. Thankfully, one hole of the holes was opened as we checked in. Would’ve been nice to have the price reduced bc of this issue.
Also, the course was just aerated making the greens hard to read because of all the sand.
Unwarned about course conditions until we got to the starter
Greens were airated and two holes (14 &15) were closed with no warning until you were at the starter. On the plus side 12 strokes better than previous best, maybe missing those 2 holes helped. Played here in June and the course was wonderful, complete opposite now. Would have been happy if we knew about it ahead of time.
1st and last time
Recently punched greens were not noted on GolfNow. Miserable and unwelcoming Pro Shop staff also did not inform us upon check-in that holes 14 & 15 were closed. They left that duty to the starter (the one nice guy) who told us 10 minutes before tee time. Also, they have cart issues, and the staff obviously doesn’t check the parking brakes because we had to turn around and return our cart when we discovered this on #1. Saw this happen to another golfer also. Tee boxes are in rough shape and overall grounds are shabby (weeds, overgrown shrubbery, cart paths are in bad shape). Don’t waste your money at this place. It’s a shame because I’m sure this was a nice golf course at one time.
Disappointment
Not sure as to whether I’m pointing the title of this review to the course or TeeOff…as you never know where the gap in communication is from. When I booked the teetime last week, there was not a reference to recent (as in just occurred) aeration; greens were un-playable. The course conditions were exasperated by heavy recent rains, flooded cart paths and damage causing 2 holes to be deemed “cancelled/closed”. No ones fault on the Mother Nature front. One could argue the course should have closed for the day and/or provided a rain check - for the good of the course and goodwill to the clients; none was offered.
Course a little wet after all the rain
Course wet, but always fun to play. Getting back in shape after all the rain.
Not playing here again
The greens are beat to crap, fungus and massive ball marks everywhere. The golf carts are terrible and probably 15 years old and the pace of play is the worst around. It’s not even close to being worth $100 to play. It shouldn’t be higher than $40. I’m not going back
Most over priced course in Atlanta
Greens were really poor and several are dying out.
1 out of 4 tee boxes had large areas and f turf missing (blue tees)
Lakes were a disgusting- black or reddish with algae and gunk. Why would a gated community with a guard and million * homes want their course to look like this
And to pay $80 - I get much better conditions at courses from $50-75
I don’t plan on returning for a while
Need new greens. Not worth the money
Greens are awful and slow. They need Bermuda as these bent greens are way past their prime.
At $85.00 don't waste the money.
Course Conditions
I expected the greens to have been in better shape for the price point. They were patchy in places but still rolled okay. The fairways were in decent shape. I would still recommend the course.
