I love this course!
I’ve played here at least 5-times, and each time was special. It’s very walkable, a GREAT value and I always meet some of the most unique and colorful characters there. The last time I played here I played 36 because my husband was playing at Harding in a Charity event. He didn’t know he couldn’t be there early to warm up…because there was still COVID restricted rules. So, he dropped me off to play, and was going to walk with me for a few holes, but was told he would have to play (no spectators allowed during COVID restricted era). I also asked what the fee would be after 18 to go again. The price was so low, I knew I was going to play again. At the end of my round, I checked in to go for my second 18, and the starter told me to just go play.
I was by myself, and noticed a group of 3-men in front of me, and even though they saw me waiting on them for 6-holes…they never invited me to join them. That’s not unusual, men want to play alone. I always run through the tunnel to #4 and back from #7 to #8 (I think). Anyway, I dropped back because there also were 3-men in back of me. These guys reminded me of the Homeboys I went to school with in East San Jose, and they let me join them,. They quietly trash talked each other in front of me. When I made a birdie putt…I put the pressure on them with a verbal challenge. Their eyes got bit, and “BOOM” I became one of the guys. It was a BLAST!
I’ve seen improvements on the course since the time before I played, but I like the ruggedness of the course. There are enough challenges, but it’s fair. Play this course, really! I feel like a kid in a candy shop every time I’m there!
Muddy new year
Course was a tad muddy from the rains, but it is still one of the best value for San Francisco residents. Back nine greens are definitely better, but front nie layout is awesome. Will be back fro sure, often!
Perfect pace of play
Weather was outstanding. Putting was a fun challenge. Most tee boxes are a little in even and more mud then grass. However the rest of the course is well kept.
Please make sure to throw away your trash when you play.
Fun course with some challenging holes
Sharp Park is a fun course with some challenging holes.
The layout is interesting and the par 3's are long.
Pace of play was good but can be slow in some instances
Great MacKenzie Layout - Excellent Value
It's a MacKenzie design - played on Masters Sunday!!
Fantastic layout. Greens are fast and break like heck.
Course is in decent shape but could be a go-to course with a bit more investment. Greens could be smoother, fairways a bit more consistent.
And...it should be faster. Four hours to play 13 holes makes it difficult to maintain rhythm once you find your swing.
Sharp Park is a wonderful value and a fun course to play.
Fun course with some challenging holes
Sharp Park is a fun course with some challenging holes.,
It is next to the ocean and normally a little windy but not today..
It is popular and today there were too many golfers and no marshalls making the golfers move faster.
Angry staff - ruined the experience
We had a mid-day tee time and we arrived to a very angry staff member. He yelled at us to check in right away (even though there wasn't anyone in sight). His poor attitude sent us off the tee box on the wrong foot. Too bad because there are some really nice holes here. Maybe think about having people working there who at least act like they want to be there. This guy obviously hates his job.
Slow Sharp
Not enough staff on hand to marshall all the kooks that play this course. Two group backup by the third hole is ridiculous...
Course need a lot of work
Beautiful layout but fairways and greens need a lot of work.
Budget McKenzie Course
This is my quasi-home course, and perhaps have a bias for it, but for people who are willing to take some amenity concessions it's worth your time.
Pros:
-Majority of the Course was designed by Allister McKenzie, and may pay homage to the Scottish Links Style. Hole 12, 16, 17, 18 are particularly fun and memorable.
-It's walkable, which is good because you have a 20% chance of getting cart.
-It's affordable, especially if you're an SF or Pacifica Resident.
Cons:
- No driving range, however the first 4 holes have pretty wide open fairways, so it's easy to get warmed up there.
- Conditions are sub-optimal. Fairways can be inconsistent, and greens are scarred, bunkers are ok.
-Carts generally don't have working breaks, and smell like a two stroke dirtbike, but they drive very very fast. You should walk this course anyways.
Would I recommend this course? Absolutely, it's a piece of bay area history that we almost lost, due to pressure from environmentalist groups. It's a beautiful design that is fun for all levels of golfers, and is a nice walk near the ocean. It's rough around the edges, but I think there's partial intent there to keep the Fairweather golfers away.
A poor experience
1- The course has no restrooms nor drinking/eating facilities even though these are now allowed.
2- Carts are ancient gas powered vehicles and in very poor condition. Two would not accelerate out of idle and one had a broken suspension and could not steer in a straight line.
3-Cart paths were rough in places, sometimes with broken paving
4- Greens sometimes werea close cut weed with little grass.
5- Overall, showed major neglect and poor value for the high price.
