Hidden Gem
It's a beautiful and fun to play course. The fairways are relatively wide, but can play tough if the winds are blowing. There are risk/rewards on your drive if you want to set up for a better angle on the approach shot.
The course is a bit rough is parts. The fairway and greens can be patchy and bumpy. The condtions are typical of a muni course. However, if they ever decide to give it a little love and care, Sharp Park can rival any course in Northern California.
Decent muni, great for walkers
This course has a good layout, providing enough challenges. Yet It is relatively flat, so easy to walk. The fairways are fairly wide and long, giving you a number of chances to let your driver rip! The downside is that the fairways could be in better shape, but given that it’s a muni with a reasonable price, one can’t expect too much! There used to be a lot of daisies, but thankfully those have been largely cleaned up!
Basic course, good layout
Nice layout, holes in back 9 go along the beach. Extremely walkable course. Challenging. The conditions aren’t great, Muni course. It is great to hone your skills.
So horribly disappointing
Alister MacKenzie would be rolling over in his grave if he knew what disrepair this course was in. The bones of this course are fantastic. The location is equally great. And the good ends there.
The course needs about $20M pumped into it to bring it back to the proper conditions that it should be in. It's a poorly run dumpster fire right now. Even checking in sucked. I arrived at 3:10 for a 3:30 tee time and was rudely told not to check in because I was too early. Then 5 minutes later, they announce on an intercom that you can hear from 2 holes away that it's my time to check in. And then they don't take American Express.
Fairways and roughs have weeds growing in them. Greens were bumpy. Sand traps weren't taken care of. Tee boxes were a mess. Rough is gnarly. Dress codes are non existent. I was paired with three very nice people. The group in front of me had a cart that couldn't even get up the small hill heading into the first par three (the 5th hole, which could be absolutely fantastic). It's an uphill par three, 190 from the tips, trees on the right side, into a small green that feels secluded.
We played the first 8 holes in about two hours. 9-14 took about 1:40, and then I decided to leave after 14. I probably would have left after 9 if 9 went back to the clubhouse (which it doesn't), so 14 was a convenient jumping off point.
I know the course has been mired with political and legal issues, but I left today's round with such immense sadness for what this place could be and what it actually is. I hope it gets cleaned up. It obviously doesn't have the distance to host events like Harding or Olympic, but this course could be every bit as good. I'd love to come back after it's restored to its glory.
$70 with cart. Cart straps didn’t hold bags, required Jerry rig. Cart wouldn’t move unless choke was toggled...EVERY TIME. no bathroom availability at clubhouse. This course breaks my heart, it could be so nice.
not pictures of sharp park on golfnow
baloney....... not pictures of sharp park.
all the trees are cypress and there are lots of them. not palm trees blowing in the wind with ocean views
course is great .
layout fun .
Prepaid tee times
The issue with the course not honoring prepaid tee times from TeeOff/GolfNow happened again. But I was prepared because of previous reviews warning about this. Bring a paper copy of your receipt and be prepared to state your case and not let them force you into paying again. I did, and was able to play with my prepaid reservation. TeeOff/GolfNow, Sharp Park Golf Course, and SF Parks and Rec really need to get their act together and figure this out so people don’t need to go through this time and time again.
Fun links style course
Great day! Really fun course. Wind plays a huge factor. The holes across the highway play totally different than the holes on the course. Challenging and rewarding course. Greens need some work but weren’t terrible. Overall this course was great! And the staff and other golfers were the friendliness and nicest anywhere I’ve played in California.
Mixed experience
The course Lay-out and some of the holes are fun. Different style holes and nice views.
Fairways were wide, so forgiving for errand shots. What I did not like were the bumpy greens and dry/bumpy patches on the fairway.
No Bathrooms at Sharp Park
The 4th and 16th hole had portable potty units. I traveled an hour to get to the course and was not able to relieve myself until the 4th hole. I made sure I used the porta potty at hole 16.
I think the course should have a porta potty at the clubhouse.
I don't plan on going to play Sharp Park anytime soon with these conditions.
Cool old course
Only problem is the carts are the originals from the early 60s and the price of the cart rental is from 2040 dollars. Great place to walk
Best kept secret
Playing this course is always a pleasure.. It’s beautifully laid out In an exquisite setting with a good mix of long and short pars and some challenging greens. It’s easy to get to from SF and when meeting friends coming up from the peninsula. During the pandemic, Sharp Park is what the doctor ordered to keep your sanity.
Look Sharp, Golf Sharp
Never in the best of conditions, but a Great course. What do you expect from a public course owned by SF they only wants to spend its budget on Harding. Allister McKenzie did it right and it has endured the changes to still offer a great golf experience. If you want close to perfect go to a country club, but this place has the magic if you don’t be too tight
Great public course, deceptively challenging
Sharp park is a great value, although lacking many of the bells and whistles of many courses. The first three holes are a nice warm up, 4-7 are a fun jaunt into the forest and up/down the mountain, and today, I watched one of my foursome get a hole-in-one on 8.
The course is right on the ocean so the wind, and weather in general, can be challenging. Greens could definitely use some care, but are definitely better than some of the other local public courses. No driving range, so warm up nearby at the San Bruno golf center, if needed.
