Angry staff - ruined the experience
We had a mid-day tee time and we arrived to a very angry staff member. He yelled at us to check in right away (even though there wasn't anyone in sight). His poor attitude sent us off the tee box on the wrong foot. Too bad because there are some really nice holes here. Maybe think about having people working there who at least act like they want to be there. This guy obviously hates his job.
Slow Sharp
Not enough staff on hand to marshall all the kooks that play this course. Two group backup by the third hole is ridiculous...
Course need a lot of work
Beautiful layout but fairways and greens need a lot of work.
Budget McKenzie Course
This is my quasi-home course, and perhaps have a bias for it, but for people who are willing to take some amenity concessions it's worth your time.
Pros:
-Majority of the Course was designed by Allister McKenzie, and may pay homage to the Scottish Links Style. Hole 12, 16, 17, 18 are particularly fun and memorable.
-It's walkable, which is good because you have a 20% chance of getting cart.
-It's affordable, especially if you're an SF or Pacifica Resident.
Cons:
- No driving range, however the first 4 holes have pretty wide open fairways, so it's easy to get warmed up there.
- Conditions are sub-optimal. Fairways can be inconsistent, and greens are scarred, bunkers are ok.
-Carts generally don't have working breaks, and smell like a two stroke dirtbike, but they drive very very fast. You should walk this course anyways.
Would I recommend this course? Absolutely, it's a piece of bay area history that we almost lost, due to pressure from environmentalist groups. It's a beautiful design that is fun for all levels of golfers, and is a nice walk near the ocean. It's rough around the edges, but I think there's partial intent there to keep the Fairweather golfers away.
A poor experience
1- The course has no restrooms nor drinking/eating facilities even though these are now allowed.
2- Carts are ancient gas powered vehicles and in very poor condition. Two would not accelerate out of idle and one had a broken suspension and could not steer in a straight line.
3-Cart paths were rough in places, sometimes with broken paving
4- Greens sometimes werea close cut weed with little grass.
5- Overall, showed major neglect and poor value for the high price.
A poor experience
1- No rest rooms or water fountains
2- No eating or drinking facilities even though now allowed
3- The cart was dangerous - difficult to steer, broken chassis bottoming sever al times, poor brakes
4- Greens were some kind of low weed and very little grass. Would not hold the ball.
5- Fairways were so-so - many bald patches
6- Price was very high for such a poor quality course
7- Design has potential but neglect is severe
Great value
Good course that could be improved with investment by owners. If CCofSF can’t make a world class destination, let another city or developer improve this gem. Staff was great!
Sharp Park
The course is in good shape. Fairways are big and grass is thick. Greens are is ok shape some are faster then others. Bunkers add to the challenge but the course does not frustrate you. Worth the price if you get a deal on Golfnow or similar sites. Limited carts so expect to walk the 6 miles.
Good moderately challenging course
This is a flat course that is easy to walk. The tree-lined fairways are nice and long, not too many bunkers, This is a deceptively challenging course! With the wide and relatively flat fairways, it looks quite easy. Has nice challenges along the way.
No driving range and course is chewed up. A shame that the city is not spending more on this iconic course. Alister would be ashamed
Great Layout
Maintenance would make this course worth what they charge. Unfortunately the city of San Francisco won't bother with any upgrades or improvements, satisfied with simply keeping it going as it's little revenue source. Too bad, as it has the potential to be great.
Lovely Setting with Deferred Maintenance
Sharp Park is a nice little course with wide fairways and beautiful trees lining them. The fairway is a tad shaggy and the greens are fairly chewed up so a straight putt is nearly impossible. Despite this, it is a fun course to play.
Oh Sharp Park!
I love the course layout, I just wish the course was in better condition especially the greens. If the City could just spend a few $$ on it. It was such a beautiful day.
Terrible experience
Equipment old and broken. Cart was dirty, broken down. No windshield, errant steering , torn seats and broken brakes. Course wasn’t in that bad a condition. Walking cart broken, wouldn’t standup.
