Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort - South/West

About
Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa offers 27 holes of championship golf. Divided into three nines: North, South, and West, the courses are played in three different 18-hole combinations. The South/West Course enjoys the snow-capped Mount Jacinto as a backdrop. Thousands of palm trees cover the rolling terrain and there are six lakes that come into play throughout all three courses. There are also strategically placed bunkers along the greens. The West nine's third hole is possibly the golf course's toughest. It's lengthy at 645 yards and it presents a challenging third-shot approach to an elevated, double-tiered green. The layout offers a few challenging holes but it is still quite player-friendly. In addition to the scenery and playability, another attractive quality is that a round can be played in less than four hours.

Disappointed
The course had suffered damage during the storm and the first hole on the North Course was washed away. In the gulleys there was mud at the bottom. No one told us before we played and I think it wasn’t good value for the price. Staff were very nice, but did not tell us the situation.
Impacted by rain.
Wet weather affects this course adversely.
Parts get washed out.
Course layout & conditions are good otherwise. The lesson would seem to be to avoid just after rain.
Will give credit to the course for notification beforehand - last day in town so didn’t have many options however.
Only 15 holes available to play.
Bunkers were compacted and hard. Only 15 holes available to play. Available holes were in pretty good shape.
OK Value w/ Notes Below
Due to damage from rains and washouts, this 27-hole course is only playing on 15 holes. The West course has holes 4 to 9 open, the South course 1 thru 9, and the North course is offically closed. Staff will allow you to finish 18 by going to North 7, 8, and 9.
RLP
Although I rated this course as not good 2 months ago, that was when there was only one nine plus 6 holes on the west nine and the south was closed. Now that the south nine is open and the north nine , it’s a very playable 18 in pretty good condition, mostly forgiving fairways but the rough can be very penal , a good test for a mid handicapper from the blue tees. I’ve played this course 5 times in the last 2 months and I’ll play it again.
Beautiful views
Playing in 75* weather while looking at snow capped mountains is amazing. Very good shape. Greens rolled true although not a lot of break. Joshua in the clubhouse was very helpful.
Not bad
I played this course on a hot deal and it was worth it. If it was full price I’d say no. Basic desert country club layout, a couple funky holes because of the wash and one hole was made to a par 3 in the wash. All in all for what I payed, wasn’t bad.
Too much mud
Ditches come into play on many holes, with mud everywhere, as a result of recent rain storm. Greens were great and most fairways. They had to convert a par 5 to a par 3, because of mud. There was no parking because of a tennis tournament. They made us park offsite, and had to take a shuttle to the course. As a result we were late for or tee time.
Canadian
No one on staff said anything about the 1st hole on the north course being almost completely washed out , where you end up playing a par 3 from about 135 yards, instead of a par 5 , just over 500 yards. Found out from the members I played with as we were driving down the cart path. The fairways were in good shape, except for the few holes that that had steep elevation, where the fairways were washed out mud and sand. Too many blind shots on the north course. Had no choice but to play the north and south 9 hole course, as the west 9 holes was washed away. The south was much nicer to play than the north. The rough was green and thick, and difficult to play. Greens were just average, very bumpy, inconsistent, and sparse in places. The south side had more interesting, and picturesque holes, but far too few for me to recommend this course to anyone. Even though we finished at a little over 4 hours, the pace of play was frustrating. There are many old timers playing this course who cannot hit the ball well. So to wait for players dribbling their shots 50 or 60 yards down the middle , was very difficult to get into any kind of rhythm. Save your money and find somewhere else to play.
