Always enjoy playing this course
Staff is always friendly, Greens in good shape, fairways & rough need some work, however this time of year is typical of winter play conditions. Good bargain for my money.
Pace of play, 18 holes in 3.5 to 4 hours.
The course was overbooked, we started 20 minutes late, It took 3 hours to play the front 9, at the turn there were 2 foursomes ahead of us waiting at the 10th tee. We called it a day. For the record this doesn't happen often, frustrating when it does.
Easy Flat Course
This course is alright if you can't get a tee time somewhere else. It tends to get crowded and with no starter and marshalls speeding up play, it can get slow. There is literally 0 difference between playing blue and white tees. For their price you can find something else a lot much better. I am not trying to blast this course but it is not worth what they ask for and is really short. Driver-Sand Wedge the whole time. Even on the par 5's. Greens were extremely bumpy.
Convenient location - but course need work.
Played course on 1/1/13, and course was needing some work. Green speed was consistent, but not true, as they needed rolling. The ball would snake back and forth on the multitude of irregularities. Fairways were Barron in places. Layout is fun, but course needs some love.
greens in very poor shape, fairways are weed patches
Was a nice course years ago, now its a cow pasture
Good Value
The course could use some work but with the price available on Click and the pace of play on a weekend it is well worth the round.
Good Challenge
My recent play at SBGC was less than fun. There was a frost delay that backed up tee times by three hours. That's uncontrollable. The problem...when they did send out groups, they sent 4's, 5's and 6ers out. While that solves a problem of getting people started, it creates another problem of stacking the greens which severely slows the pace of play. After 5 hours of play not to mention two hours of delay, my group left and we were not nearly finished. There has to be a better solution than stacking fat groups. I consider SBGC my home course since El Rancho Verde closed. With that said, I wish they would spend a little more time grooming the rough areas of grass, filling gopher holes and improving the cart paths. Rough is supposed to be a challenge, not an impossibility. Its bad to see where your ball landed and with a 4some looking, cant find it. Everyone I play with also complain about SBGC's practice of dying the water blue so you cant retrieve/see your ball. Then they sell the balls at the counter or use them for range balls!? That's just wrong any way you look at it! .This could really be a premium course with just a few minor policy and landscaping changes.
This course is good for the price.
The course was in decent shape, i've been playing here for about 10 years. Greens were in good shape, the fairways are hard in some areas, but it plays well.
four great water holes
This course is short on distance. Fairway are lined with tall trees. It is a must to keep in fairway. You must be accurate with irons there is water and you have real small greens.
Good value.
Started on time. Pace of play nice. Course in good condition. Number 11 green immaculate. Number 18 tee box too much of a mound.
Risk Reward Course
For the money, this is a good deal. Fairways are a sketchy but greens were in great shape. The course has some interesting holes, it's on the shorter side but offers many risk/reward situations. For instance, the second hole is heavily lined with trees, you can play 5i, 5i pitching wedge to the green, and get over the lake in front, or take a driver and with a great shot, have a realistic shot at reaching in two.
Good pace of play.
Course was in good shape. Staff was very friendly. No issues. It was a pleasant golf experience.
A good place to practice.
This is a good place to practice. Greens are fair, fairways need lots of attention, the place could use paved cart paths, tee boxes are not in the best condition. Nice snack bar and grill, two practice ranges, easy to walk.
Old, short municipal course, but with character
The reality of this course: This course is short, and many of the yardage markers on the tees are at the very back. There are a number of very short par 4's, some of which with ponds in front of the green. The 2 par 5's are short: 475y and 455y; and 3 of the par 3's are a short iron. The course was maintained at the basic level, with mostly green grass everywhere; the greens had 2 types of grasses, aside from the kikuyu grass creeping on to the greens, so putting was not true. The tree roots are the thickest above ground I've ever seen. That is the reality.
Now, the interesting parts are that most of the holes are narrow; trees are old, and they are pretty thick and can create havoc with some shots. You will need to be accurate off the tee. There are a few holes with reasonable length, and one very gimmicky hole (#9), where you either lay up at 180y or try to fly a lake with a carry of 250y. This hole is where you will see some well-placed trees.
Bottom line: if you are a short-hitter, or would like to play a fun municipal course at a reasonable price, try this one out. If you like the higher-end courses, then stay away.
Older course fun to play.
You must keep the ball in the fairways or add stroks. Older trees with roots and tough recovery shots needed if you are not in the fairway. Trees will overhang many shots. On busy days watch for balls from other players. Some very tough water to deal with.
This course is both challenging & fun to play.
Since I am somewhat new to golf, I find this course fun to play. It has both easy & challenging degrees of play. The staff are all very friendly.
FRIENDLY STAFF, GREENS IN GREAT CONDITION
OCTOBER IN SO. CAL., FAIRWAYS ARE A LITTLE BUMPY.
GREENS ARE IN GREAT CONDITION. STAFF IS GREAT
The Two Faces of Berdoo
San Berdoo is an old style value play. Country club it ain't, but don't be so fast to dismiss it. The first 11 holes lie in the vicinity of the Santa Ana River river bottom. As a result in addition to the multitude of thick pine trees you get various cottonwoods to challenge your shots. There are a couple short par fours. But there is also the second, a par five which requires a well placed tee shot. The fourth, a long par thee with a sinister green protected by an immense bunker and a king Cottonwood. The fifth which once was a an easy par 5 but is now a long tough par 4. The front nine closes a par 4 which requires a 180 yard layup off the tee to be short of a pond which is driveable by only the biggest hitters.
The back nine continues bear the river, which you never really see, but then crosses it and here the course changes character. The course becomes more open and less interesting. The 12th offers you a lay up choice unless you dare to shoot a narrow gap. 13 is open but long. The 17th is a forgettable par 4 at which you have to avoid a large screen along the left side. The round closes with a double dogleg par 5.
The course is in good shape for the price, except the players just don't repair their ball marks. Hit it straight and you will score well; don't and you will lose a shot for every fairway missed.
frustratingly fun outing
The course features tree-lined fairways - some a bit narrow - and very few bunkers. The staff is ever-present, both in the pro shop and on the course. If the weather is windy, this is the best course to play in the Inland Empire area.
