Castle Oaks Golf Club

About
Castle Oaks Golf Club is situated on the historic Preston Farmlands. The Preston Castle, built in 1894 overlooks the rolling, oak-studded hills of the course. The course opened a century later but it blends in beautifully with the existing terrain, utilizing the Sutter and Mule Creeks and mature trees as natural hazards. When the golf course opened it was acclaimed as the best public course in northern California and it has remained one of the area's premier courses. The layout has an interesting mix of holes with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are narrow and play alongside environmental hazards. The meandering creeks and several lakes come into play throughout. There are many risk/reward opportunities and golfers will encounter several hazards and out-of-bounds off the tee, but overall the course is player-friendly enough to appeal to any skill level.

A little deferred maintenance, the sign got hot and buckled so you can't use the ball washer Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Most of the greens are kidney shaped, designed perpendicular to the fairway, so you don't want to go long, but plenty of run left/right Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Castle Oaks comes from the old castle-looking build seen from the 16th fairway, that was the 1st juvenile detention facility in CA built in the the early 1900s. It was closed in the 1970s. Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Terrible shape
Just another course that is charging full price and putting no effort in maintaining their course. Bunkers are full of rocks and fairways and first cut are patchy at best. Many of the greens have big holes and they’ve been there for a long time!
Restaurant food is terrible and snack bar hasn’t been open on the weekend 3 times in a row
Great Layout, Winter conditions not great
Played in cold weather, a lot of recent rain and standing water, so taking that into account. Many greens had large bare/dirt patches that made portions of them unplayable, however the holes seemed to be intentionally cut away from them.
Great layout, first time playing it and there was plenty of interest in different hole layouts and trouble. The biggest issue was the pace of play. Did not see a marshall the hole round. 18 holes took 5.5 hours.
Skip this course
2nd time playing here on the weekend where the snack bar wasn’t open and the restaurant food is gross
Fun course
Fairways in good shape for mid winter.
Greens in great shape. Firm and fairly fast.
Tee boxes in really rough shape
Amazing
Absolutely gorgeous course. Pace of play was great, no extremely long waits in the 6 times I have been here. It’s also a slicers paradise and many holes are the size of dog parks haha. I’ll be coming here for the rest of my days
nice course location
Perfect cool sunny winter day for playing golf. Greens are fast and in fair shape. Some fairways had leaf debris in vicinity of trees that that made locating a ball difficult but not severe. Good variety of play on holes.
Pro shop staff and bunkers.
The guy that was checking us in was a grump person that should not be checking people in if he’s going to have a really poor attitude. Maybe he didn’t want to be there , but he was so adjust your attitude. I only went into two bunkers and had to pull my ball out because there were rocks bigger than my golf ball in both bunkers I went into. Also the hacks that play this course really need to fix their ball marks along with a plus one, golf etiquette people look into it.
Sad to see
This course used to be pristine! I'm not sure what happened, but it's now in terrible shape. The tee boxes are garbage and the fairways are not far behind. The greens used to be one of the treasures of this course, but they are sadly on their way out as well. The range was an absolute dog track!! I can't believe they are still charging premium prices to play there. Save your money and time and choose a different course.
