Mather Golf Course

Mather is usually a pretty good course to play but the last few rounds over the last couple of weeks the greens have been in bad shape. They are fighting a fungus and also just sanded the greens recently. They are very slow, bumpy and the ball doesn’t roll true to line. On the back 9 the actual green was closed on a couple of holes and there was a temporary green set up in front of the actual greens. The staff is friendly but didn’t say a word about this when I checked in. Don’t play Mather right now unless you aren’t concerned about putting and want to take two putts automatically.

Good price, a little far away, greens in poor shape. Everything else was fine.

Can’t believe there wasn’t any warning about the conditions of the greens. Just horrible that was notified when booked, or when I checked in. I’ve played greens that were recently punched in better conditions.

course is fine if you don’t pay full price. some tee boxes are beat up. greens are awful

The course itself is in good shape but the greens are in terrible condition. Some of the worst I’ve ever seen.

The greens at Mather are usually smooth and predictable but yesterday they were patchy and slow. It looked like there had been a weed problem that required some treatment? Fairways and rough looked good for late summer conditions.

The greens and fringes are the second worst I’ve seen in the Sacramento area next to Dry Creek. Not worth the money.

I came out as single and got paired with a nice gentleman with good skills. Clubhouse staff was very nice, as was the starter. The course was in fairly good shape. The hard clay off the fairways can be troublesome, as your ball just keeps rolling out of play when you push one out that way. Greens were sloooowwww, and a little messed up (weeds). Regardless, the deal I got on Golf Now, and the kind spirited golfers all over the place was well worth the price and effort. Also, lots of great outdoor furniture to relax on after the round. Couches, gas fire places, etc. Mather is a really nice place to spend and afternoon; especially with the fall weather.

Check-in was friendly, quick, and the restaurant/bar staff was very helpful. They chilled my shot of tequila and gave me a bag of ice for my beers I purchased. They had an ice chest on the cart, which Timber Creek doesn't have.

There was a starter on the first tee that very kindly informed me of who I was playing with. Tee boxes, I give a 6 out of 10. Some uneven surfaces, but plenty of fresh grass to hit from.

Fairways. To be fair I give them a 7. I had a couple of drives that landed in the fairway with bad lies.

Rough. It was too deep, but just slightly. My playing partners and myself had some difficulties finding balls that were just slightly off the fairway. Just to note that the tree leaves are starting to fall which makes finding balls in the rough harder to find.

Greens. This was the weak point. I have to give them a 4. Very bumpy especially right around the hole, looked like some old school player had his metal spikes out there. Also a lot of sandy spots that should have been marked as under repair.

Overall... 5 out of 10. Average course. This was originally designed for military personnel recreation.

Overall for the price... 7 out of 10. The layout is nice, a good mix of holes to make a standard par 72 course. Don't expect to play any holes that have outstanding designs or views. The greens need a lot of work. As it being a local course for me I will definitely be playing again, but if your looking for a destination experience pass this course up.

Overall course is nice its fairly easy and straight. The greens leave a lot to be desired. Bumpy as cam be and the back nice is patchy

Have played Mather several times this year. Usually in good shape. Played 3 weeks ago, and noticed greens were slow and a bit fuzzy. Didn't think much of it at the time.

Went back yesterday and greens are in poor condition. Slow, very fuzzy, and now bare in many spots.

Would not recommend until they get the greens squared away.

Great player assistants very friendly and kept pace moving. Course layout is pretty simple but fun

Mather is a mixed bag; the course is a nice layout, but the greens are just way too slow; The greens keeping staff were watering the greens as we played, so

perhaps they’re battling to not lose them, but it’s amazing to me how slow they were compared to playing here late March/early April, when they were great. Also, I don’t understand the lack of rangers policing for pace of play; a 5 hour round starting early on a weekend morning is such a disappointment. That said, the Pro Shop and Clubhouse staff are great, very very helpful.

Greens were shaggy. Fairways were swamped. I get the water heavy due to heat. But overwatering for sure on some fairways
