Castle Oaks Golf Club

About
Castle Oaks Golf Club is situated on the historic Preston Farmlands. The Preston Castle, built in 1894 overlooks the rolling, oak-studded hills of the course. The course opened a century later but it blends in beautifully with the existing terrain, utilizing the Sutter and Mule Creeks and mature trees as natural hazards. When the golf course opened it was acclaimed as the best public course in northern California and it has remained one of the area's premier courses. The layout has an interesting mix of holes with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are narrow and play alongside environmental hazards. The meandering creeks and several lakes come into play throughout. There are many risk/reward opportunities and golfers will encounter several hazards and out-of-bounds off the tee, but overall the course is player-friendly enough to appeal to any skill level.

Most of the greens are kidney shaped, designed perpendicular to the fairway, so you don't want to go long, but plenty of run left/right Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Castle Oaks comes from the old castle-looking build seen from the 16th fairway, that was the 1st juvenile detention facility in CA built in the the early 1900s. It was closed in the 1970s. Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Work needs to be done
Too much thick grass and swampy conditions on the fairways
Grass was over watered and uneven. Greens were really rough and some missing grass
There should have been some warning of these conditions
Restaurant had no sugar free options
Great Day
Always fun to play golf course, great layout fun track.
Fungus city and no rate adjustment
Castle is one of my favorite courses in the greater Sac area. Overall, the course design is really good and there are lots of interesting shots to be made around the track.. There are a fair share of bland holes as well, but like I said It’s super fun and interesting. Yesterday, however, I was quite disappointed to see a number of greens ravaged by a fungus and varmints, and when I say these greens were in bad condition, believe me, they were in horrible, horrible condition. I don’t blame them for having to deal with naturally occurring challenges, but my baseline in business always is if you’re not presenting a product that is the model for your regular pricing, it’s reason to provide a related discount that reflects the change in value. It’s just the right thing to do, and the course should know better.
I wish players would fix their ball marks.the greens are full of bald, unrepaired divots. I don't blame the course but the players. A repaired divot heals in a few days.
Ok golf course
In general Castle Oaks was a fair deal when you include the GolfNow discount.
We played early before the heat and the pace of play was OK. The greens were in good condition although I was surprised at the number of unrepaired divots. Many golfers just don’t repair divots anymore – too bad.
The layout is good, with narrow fairways on some holes. Several of the par threes are extra challenging.
Nice track
Golf Course is nice, great greens, fairways, crappy traps and tees. But the worst part was the slow play by the local yocals. Held up the entire course behind them and could careless.
Castle Oaks review
Golf course is in fair condition. Cart paths are very bumpy. The greens are full of divets and some greens have several dead grass areas. The fairways were ok but I had to remove lots of debris before I hit my shot. There was a tree removed from one of the fairways and now it’s just a muddy spot with long grass in the middle of the fairway. Overall I played a decent round but I had to dodge several imperfections.
Good course
The golf course conditions are considerably better than this year's hot summer.
Course is in good condion
Played mid August. The course is in good condition for hot summer. I have to say it is in very good condition for public course. Recommend !!
What happened????
I have to say it’s been most of the summer since I’ve played here. But I was really looking forward to my round here this weekend!
But the course was absolutely terrible condition.
Certainly not the same care and love that this course had when I played here 4 mos ago at the end of April. My whole group absolutely agrees we will not be back any time soon.
Greens were terrible and trashed, lots of dead spots. Tee boxes were worse than the fairway should be. Ball marks , divots and just in general terrible shape.
Also it appears they were grossly over watering and there were swamp traps scattered liberaly
