Course in good shape
Greens and fairways were nice. Yardage markers lacking in fairways. GPS in golf carts pretty good though.
ONE OF MY EST SHOTS THIS YEAR
I HAVE Played this course for a few years and cannot remembering getting on the 10th green in 2. I was furthest back in my threesome and in the fight side rough near a tree. Hill in front. I did not go up hill to see my aiming point about 170-180 away. I flushed a 5wood about 10 feet to the left of the hole. Just missed my birdie. Got par.
we got rain on 16, more on 17, and did not even attempt 18 since it was really coming down and windy
Everything was good except for the sand traps
Great course, great pace of play sand traps need a little work.
Easy short course
It very short which in turn makes the course very easy to play. It is not to say the fun level is low there - in fact, it is fun to play there. Recommended for the deal.
Ok but slow play and greens are not very good
SLOW PLAY played front in two hours took three hours on back greens look ok but they are very slow also not sure if they are just watering a lot due too no rain bunkers are still not great but better than I remember from last year
Course in great shape
Enjoyed playing this course, challenging but fair. Fairways somewhat open and in real good shape.
Great Value
Course was in great condition. Greens are a bit slower than most courses in the area. Course is challenging, with some longer par 5's, and some tricky par 3's.
Best Value in the area
I live within 2 miles of CGI, but always prefer Red Tail. There's no better value in McHenry County. I seem to always find a tee time that works for me at a great price.
I have no problem with the Clubhouse. I'd rather have it stay the way it is and pay $40-$45 for a round, than have them build a $2M Clubhouse and pay $75
Great Value for Course
This course is a fun course to play for the price. I think you get exactly what you pay for and a lot more. The course was in great shape and starters and staff were very friendly. Pace of play could have been a little faster but overall not to bad.
Great Value - Great Experience
I have played Redtail many times and it is one of the courses that is can provide challenges with longer holes (par 5's). The greens are in fair shape and the bunkers need a little more work, but have been improving.
Course condition slipping
I have played this course many times over the past several years. I've always considered it the best course in the area in many ways. The layout, the course condition, the staff, the pristine look of the surrounding area, etc. However, the course condition is the worst I've ever seen it. Some of the tee boxes, especially the tee box on the par 3 15th hole is horrible. The course superintendent should be embarrassed and/or should be replaced if he can't fix the conditions. The course is an excellent layout, with 18th par 4 hole being one of the toughest finishing holes I've played. I don't live in the area but am willing to drive 300 miles to play Red Tail. I hope they get the course back in the pristine conditioning I've seen in the past.
Def worth playing again.
Great pace of play took just over 4 hours to play 18 holes in a group of 4 only had to wait at the last two holes for the group in front of us. Fairways and greens maintained well. Very challenging hole placement on a Saturday, will def be back again!
Sunday hotdeal!!!
tee off on Sunday at 2pm finished around 6pm. fairway was just okay and ruff needs to be cut more. obvious ball lost two times shxx.
green was so so , overall based on what I paid $23 for 18holes it was valuable.
if you can get under $40 yes take it
Beautiful course
Had a wonderful time on a sunny day. I went with my son and enjoyed the entire experience. It was pretty wide open and we finished in under 3 hours with a cocktail on the 19th. A truly wonderful day.
A course for all levels of players
A challenging course with tee boxes set up for all abilities. A fun, high-value golf course with a great pace of play.
Get out on the course early for better pace of play.
I played Redtail multiple times over the past several years as a single (walking), a two-some, a three-some, a four-some, and for several golf outings. The criticisms of the course always remain the same: the clubhouse is composed of two trailers that are connected. Some of the sandtraps lack the sand. Parts of the course don't drain well as the course is intertwined with federally protected wetlands. The pace of play can be downright brutal at times. My group has decided that if we are going to play there, to book a tee time sometime between 7 and 8:30 in the morning. This has led to faster pace of play for us as there are less groups to get bogged down behind.
There are positives for the course as well. The course offers numerous sets of tees so that everyone can enjoy a round here regardless of skill level. The carts have a GPS system mounted in them that not only shows distances to the front, center, and back of the greens but will also show distances to hazards and bunkers. The greens have always rolled well here. They are not too fast but also not too slow. The practice green mimics the course greens very well.
The course itself presents a variety of challenges. All of the greens are protected either by water, bunkers, or wetlands (which are lateral drops in most locations around the course). There are some tee shots from elevated locations around the course but not any elevated greens. As far as I can recall, there are rarely any blind shots on this course as sightlines are pretty clean.
If I'm being honest, visually, it is not one of my favorite courses in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. To me, many of the holes closely resemble each other and the course becomes repetitive but maybe I am just missing the "character" in each hole. My recommendation would be to give it a try one time. Some of my friends love it and find it challenging. Others become bored by it. Figure it out for yourself which side you fall on. Just plan on going to the nearby pizza place instead of the clubhouse for food and drinks after your round.
MATTNOR
VERY GOOD COURSE REALLY HAD FUN PLAYING IT,SO WILL U.
5-6 rounds on weekends
Never play on weekend took almost 3 hours for 8 holes just left
Good value
Greens putt true and don't break a lot so you can read the break easily.
Its a shame
Use to be my home before I moved out of the area. The head pro Chris does a fantastic job with staff and customers. Don't be fooled by the review title, I wrote that because I've seen this course go down the last few years especially the driving range. Not fun hitting out of weeds as the season progresses and the bunkers on the course need a lot of work. Many timers you'll feel like you're hitting off the cart path if you're in one. Overall though it's a pretty course that seems deceptively longer than the scorecard states. A lot of risk/reward though.
