Bacon Park's greens were still recovering in August 2018, but they have plenty of interesting contours. This is the 15th. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/07/2018
Needs some serious TLC
The staff was very nice and welcoming. The course just needs some serious attention. Mounds and mounds of cut grass in the fairways and very long (unintentional) rough. The course was absolutely soaked, which I have never really seen on a coastal course (natural sand bases). All this being said, if it was only $30 or so a round, it wouldn't be as big of a deal, but $60+ is wildly over priced. Additionally, the carts are equipped with GPS that would kill the cart on paths near certain greens/tees.
Avoid avoid avoid
Terribly maintained course. If your ball isn’t in the fairway it will be lost as they don’t maintain the rough. Course also uses GPS carts but hasn’t mapped the course correctly. Adds tons of time to play.
Avoid not worth price lots of courses nearby for a better value .
Fun classic and great value in Savannah
Donald Ross 1926
Fairways and greens are maintained and in good condition though tee boxes show signs of frequent use. The areas that are mostly out of play are left on the wild side, and that’s OK by me. It’s a very playable course that isn’t overly penal. Some might say it’s easy, as if any golf is easy. The terrain is flat so Ross used bunkering, dog legs, raised greens, and trees for defense. There are a few lateral hazards, particularly the hole wrecking stream on #18, but generally, one can survive quite a few disobedient shots. The mature trees with their hanging moss and the din of crickets and cicadas add to the parkland feel and overall, it’s very fun to play and a good value too.
Poor Management
I wouldn’t know how the course is because there was some “confusion” between front counter staff and management. We were told we could walk the course but not rent cart or even pull carts, due to rain. Understandable. We decided we would just hit some range balls and went to ask and the oh so nice manager (extreme sarcasm) told us that the entire golf course is now closed! He was extremely rude and offered no explanation. Soon after we saw some younger gentlemen head out to play as they walked the course. Must just be all about who you know in order to play here.
From Tee to green
From the first tee to the eighteenth hole the course was in descent condition. Tees and fairways were in good condition. The greens were in need of serious repair. Having played this course in my younger days and thru my adult life, I'd have to say my play on Sunday was a little disappointing. For the money I paid to play , and the course condition, I feel it was to much.
You might as well walk...
Someone needs to immediately "flip the switch" turning off the GPS on every single golf cart!
I was on the dirt cart path and was restricted CONSTANTLY throughout the day. Ruined my customer experience...
1st time at Bacon
Good course for the price. Most greens were well kept , those that weren’t were being worked on with sod recently layed down. Fairways were mostly straight and open, this made it very easy to find the greens.
CONS, living in Savannah this time of year, water should be offered or placed throughout the course. Most Tee boxes were next to the greens which was not always to ideal when putting and having drivers going off 20-30 feet in front of you.
work in progress !
the course is improving. they cut out parts of some greens and put it sod so they are putting in good effort to make the course better. they arent cutting the grass too short so the fairways have been greatly improved ! only thing is you can get cheaper prices at every other course around. my guess is theyre trying to pay for those new gps equipped golf carts. ironic thing is the carts seem to be what most people are complaining about. play here enough and ull get used to them. overall im mostly pleased with the recent results !
Needs rain...
On my way to Maine we camped here. I played 18. These carts with their GPS cut offs are a bit disturbing especially with no paths or out of bounds marked. I got stuck a few times slowing rate of play. Speaking of which I was delayed by a couple of walkers that didn't seem to care who was behind them or how long they were playing. It's not the masters! Others are playing too!
All in all the course was a bit challenging, especially the greens, but fun. I'll be back as I see they're improving. ⛳
Way too pricy for what you get
No bev cart, slow pace of play, half of the greens have massive craters of sand in them and it’s way too expensive for what you get.
Disappointing
Many of greens had damaged areas that interfered with putts. Cart paths were non continuous with no indication where to proceed that resulted in a cart lock-up. Frustrating to unlock cart and know where to go. Coarse cut so short that many shots hitting off dirt.
Not up to par...
Not up to par. Tee boxes were ok. Fairways lacked grass. Greens were damaged by disease with large areas filled in with sand. Like a bunker in the middle of maybe 30% of the greens. We had a good time but it had nothing to do with the course. I was told that somebody bought the course and put a lot of money into it. Not sure where it went but it wasn't in improving the turf. I won't go back.
Fun course for Group
Played with a college reunion group. Course layout is very good. Will be a great course when the repairs are complete.
the course is in very good shape they just hadnt cut the rough recently because of all the rain. im sure it will be taken care of very soon if it hasnt been already !
