Bacon Park's greens were still recovering in August 2018, but they have plenty of interesting contours. This is the 15th. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/07/2018
Greens were seeded but very fast with little bumps. Course is player friendly and not a difficult course.
Challenging But Fair
Love the “new” layout of this old Savannah course. With a few exceptions the course is wide and friendly with few water hazards.
The greens are tight and fast this time of year with only one in need of repair. The cart paths are real paths and not paved.
Overall the Course is challenging but fair.
Overpriced
For a course that acts as if its one of the better in the Savannah area I was disappointed. I'm glad that golfnow offered a $10 round as opposed to the 45-50 as this course lacks many of the small things that make golf what it is. 1 no distance markers on par 3 tees. Having not played here before it was complete guess work. 2 lack of water on the course. Overall the course was ok shape, card paths are awful and in certain areas weeds are present.
Donal Ross didn't set the pins......
Bacon Park is in VERY good condition...except for the deep rough on a few holes. However, every time I play here there are several holes that have "almost goofy golf pin placements." We asked one them why they did this on one occasion. The response was "what's the matter, is it too hard for you?" Please don't look for crowns and ridges to place pins. It is a public golf course ...not the US Open.
Facelift
Have played here over the course of 30 years.
New management has this Donald Ross gem
back in all its original glory. If you have never played it you won't be disappointed. Not a resort but golf as it was meant to be played.
Nice day
Nice golf day. Tee to green in good shape, sand traps need a little work. If you play here you know about the cart paths or lack there of. I've learned to navigate around them. Stay out of the rough and you'll have a good round. Great course for a beginner or bogey golfer. Great roll in fairway after a nice pop!!! Got a great deal on GN... Couldn't pass up. Be back soon.
Low end public course
Bacon Park has benefited from some improvements over the years, but it is still a low end public course.with dirt cart paths. It had recently rained heavily, when I played it and the course was a rutted quagmire. The club house dates from the late 60's and looks it. Don't bother to play this course unless you have nothing else to do.
Great Vacation Course
Played on vacation with little expectation of it being a great course. It however surprised me, the course was in very good condition considering the amount of rain this area has had recently. The greens have a bad spot here and there but other than that are full and fast. Also something I didn't see before I got to the course is that it is a City owned/ran & is the First Tee of Savanahh so they are keeping it maintained well. One more bonus is the course is very conveniently located right off Eisenhower Pkwy. I enjoyed my first round so much I brought my FIL & BIL who had never played before and rented a set of clubs for them a couple days later. We had a great time that round as well. Definitely recommend the place if you're not wanting to spend 100$ on greens fees and just want to enjoy a round.
Over priced for what is basically a municipal
Overall the course is nice and it looks like they are working hard to improve the course conditions. The layout is typical Donald Ross. Fairways are open but rough is thick. The fairways were nice the greens could use alittle attention. Bare spots in a number of them. The bunkers were nice. The cart path was hard to navigate due to the fact that it didn't exist in some areas. The staff were awesome. The facilities are alittle dated. The practice area was very nice. Overall it's a nice course that needs alittle more time and attention to bring back. The biggest problem I have is with the price. $44 for what is basically a municipal course in regards to condition is too much.
Surprise
I played a round of golf last year at Bacon Park and as I remember I was not impressed. This year I decided to go back on a week day and found the course, for some reason, much improved.
What I liked best as an intermediate golf is this is a a very forgiving course. The fairways and greens are wide and in good condition. Each green is numbered allowing you to get around the course. The right amount of trees border the fairways, but there is not a lot of pine cones, making it difficult to find balls. Lost only two. Compared to the semi private Wilmington I played the week before, I think Bacon is equally good, if not in some ways a better course for most golfers. Highly recommend playing a round at Bacon Park.

Hot Deal gem!
After reading the reviews about questionable course conditions I was prepared for a rough tract, but was pleasantly surprised. All of the golf staff were very friendly and welcomed me as a first time visitor to their course. On the 2nd hole the ranger approached and hearing it was my first time there he spent some time offering tips about the course. Loved the layout and the classic Donald Ross design with the inverted saucer greens and the devilish chipping areas off the greens. The green speed was medium to fast, with some bumpiness, though they rolled fairly true. It should be noted that the 9th hole does not loop back to the clubhouse so plan ahead for food or drink. I thoroughly enjoyed my round at Bacon Park and will include it in my next visit to Savannah.
Good value
Considering that we haven't had much rain in the past two weeks, the fairways were in pretty good shape. Tee boxes were kind of beat up but useable. Greens are lightning fast. In general, the course was in very good condition and staff was very friendly. We'll be back.
Great value
Old dated clubhouse, no showers. Some greens had spots like ground under repair, so i just moved ball to avoid rolling through. Great day of golf, greens elevated dont be long on most of them. I was not hitting many fairways but only lost one ball.
Nice that it was just outside Savannah
course review
For a public course this place was a good value. I'm a hacker and this was very "hacker friendly". The gentlemen at the desk was extremely polite and the only minor issue I had was with the grounds workers being out on the course while we were playing. The par 5's were short but I would definitely play there again.
Give it a try
This course is a work in progress, but it still can be fun to play. The layout has its challenges and there are ample, bunkers to waylay you an your way around the course.
Summer needs to get here
This is my second time to play Bacon Park. I love the layout, some tough par 4s on the back into the wind, a long par 3 and some easy 4s sprinkled in.
The problem is the disparity of the condition of the 18 I played and the nine "inner" holes that make up the course. The fairways in the regular 18 are dormant, grassless, etc. yet the 9 holes that are less played are green and obviously fertilized.
The greens are rolling well and fast and put an emphasis on your short game. Miss the green in the wrong places and you have a combination of no lie and the fast greens. Don't have a problem with the greens but can't understand the fairways. Other courses around Savannah are much, much greener.
The sun and warmer temperatures need to get here fast.
Bacon Park
The reviews are right on. This course is a bit rough now, but they are working on getting it back to true Donald Ross standards. The staff was fertilizing, cutting back brush, blowing leaves, etc. It's only a matter of time before it's going to be more fun to play. Tee to green it's a pretty easy, straight forward course, but the greens and surrounding areas were very difficult to judge-speedy, a bit hard, and tough to read. I would have to play more to get used to it.
