Good Experience

As other reviewers have said this course is wide open; but that doesn't mean it's easy for most golfers. Miss a fairway or green on the wrong side and par becomes a real challenge. The course conditions were good for this time of year and should get a lot better with the spring green up. The greens were fast and challenging with lots of knolls & valleys. The layout is unusual in that the front 9 doesn't end at the clubhouse, but that shouldn't keep anyone from playing this course. There's a restroom near the 6th hole. The staff members were cordial and helpful. I enjoyed my round and will come back for more.

DON'T GO OVER THE GREEN

A true Donald Ross test. All greens are elevated and well trapped. Greens are fast and very undulating. Some pins are very tough as they are placed on crowns ....the maintenance staff is a somewhat sadistic. That is my only complaint ...quite a few placements a just unfair. Fairways will not be green and softer until April.

Bacon Park

Ive seen mixed reviews for this place but I really enjoyed it. If you just focus on the course and not its surroundings its a very enjoyable day. The use of the word "park" is very fitting, as the course is essentially just a large flat plot of land. Most holes are wide open, but if you find yourself off the fairway, you will likely be blocked be trees or have no angle to the green, so it becomes harder to score. Also, the back 9 is classic ross with elevated greens, so scoring can get tricky from 50 yards and in, if you had to lay up. Look out for #17, a 225 yard par 3. Overall, a fun course and one I would def play w my friends if I was a local.

Room for improvement

This course is a Donald Ross renovation. As a municipal it is impressive that they spent the money on redesign but there is much room for improvement as the fairways were packed down with little fluff. Perhaps owing to the time of year but at times it felt that you were hitting off paved surfaces. Maybe more aeration and a little water? Greens were true but several had damage in spots that made the normal true and consistent roll impossible. Fringe area allowed you to putt rather than risk chips from the hard surfaces ala Kaymer at Pinehurst. Pace of play was very slow. We saw a marshall twice but our round on this not long at all course was over four and a half hours considering the wide fairways and matted down rough made for long waits. The par fives were really par 4.5's which also slowed play. The clubhouse is in need of renovation as its age is showing. Given Savannah is close to Hilton Head and this is a Ross an investment in to better conditioning it would make it a nice off island get away to an old style course - if not for the greens alone if they are pristine. Bunkers needed more work and sand for consistency. A little more investment in time and money could make this a destination and focal point. A positive was seeing pros instructing youth on the game and it would serve them better to play on a course that would make their experience addictive to the game.

Wholeheartedly agree with reviewer's assessment of Bacon Park. Don't understand how the course could win award for redesign. This layout can't compare to the near-pristine course conditions of the southside's La Vida.

#3 Most improved course 2016

This is a municipal course that was largely forgotten until 4 years ago. Traditional Donald Ross lay out with wide flat fairways graceful live oaks and a minimum of houses on only 2 holes.Driving range open late.Staff has worked hard to rebuild it with much clearing of overgrown areas.

Just as you are thinking "pretty easy" as you near the greens in 2 ( most are elevated) the possibility of birdie or par disappears.FAST greens, some large some small, rolling in every direction...And did I mention the elevation?Suddenly you're facing a 3 putt....Lots of fun and worth playing. Will only get better.

Bacon park getting better

Played Bacon Park today. The course is well maintained and the greens were smooth. It would be nice to have a map of course on the scorecard or posted on cart like other courses do. Speed of play was better today than in the past.

Getting better all the time.

Friendly staff, laid back and fun place to play. Worth every penny and they are constantly working to get this track back to glory.

I try to play there as often as possible, just so they can keep up the great work!

Greatr for beginners

Course is wide open plenty of room to recover from errant shots. For me it was kind of boring and not really enjoyable. be a great place to learn other than fairways and greens are really hard pan. Might be better once rains come and every thing greens up but right now I would not play again.

Slowwww.....

First off, course conditions were just okay. Layout was nothing special and besides the greens the course was not very well maintained. Aside from that, I would not recommend playing this course on weekdays as the pace was considerably slow...two sets of foursomes waiting at each tee box! I left early, usually I would stay and stick it out, but I only paid $14 which was the saving grace to the day. Oh and the staff was great as well...cheers

Horrible!!!!!!

Bacon Park is the worst course I've ever played in my 65 years of golfing. The course conditions are deplorable. Fairways are devoid of grass, tee boxes besides being mostly rock hard dirt are impossible to get a tee into, and the greens are like asphalt. This redone Donald Ross layout would make the original architect turn over in his grave. The only saving grace is the friendly, helpful clubhouse staff and starter. I played Bacon Park in late March and it was bad...but not as bad as it is now.

Course Needs Lots Of Work

Surprisingly, the sand traps were well maintained but the fairways and greens were like concrete. The starter/ranger, Bill Whalen, was very cordial and helpful. He made it a point to check on our foursome several times to make sure we weren't having any difficulties. The gentleman who checked us in was very pleasant with a great sense of humor. Unfortunately, we were expecting pristine conditions from O.C. Welch Golf Properties and were sadly disappointed. Maybe later in the year things will improve dramatically. Our group only played 9 holes and the ninth hole is a very long way from the clubhouse That doesn't seem like a wise course design..

Since the renovation

This course i would say is better than average. I enjoy playing it and I would recommend it to others and have. The renovation to the original Donald Ross design has made the course more fun to play. The greens are firm and fast. They have more grass on them than most courses I have played nearby this winter. The course like all others I have played recently is winter dormant. Overall the course handles rain well. Where it doesn't they have recently added french drains to attempt to remove excess water.

Now that the course has had extensive renovations done to it, this is one of the best deals in town for golf. One of my favorite places to play...
