Hapuna Golf Course
About
Hapuna Golf Course stretches along the beautiful Kohala coastline before rising to over 700 feet above sea level. The snow-topped Mauna Kea volcano serves as a dramatic backdrop and there are seemingly endless views of the Pacific. Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay collaborated to create a visually stunning links course that utilizes the natural contours of the landscape and silky fescue grasses. The design team has received praise for not only the challenge of the design but also for how seamlessly it blends into the existing environment. Palmer incorporated several risk-reward opportunities, especially with the par 5s, the14th is a good example. There are many ways to play this hole, which features a large ravine on the right and a wide, but shallow green. Long hitters can reach the green in two but short hitters prefer two shots and a par 3.

Outstanding New Greens On An Average Big Island Course
Hapuna, from my understanding, recently renovated their greens and I can attest that the renovation was successful. The greens rolled incredibly true and smooth and putting was a pleasure. I was, therefore, surprised that there were no marshals on the course to stop the group playing ahead of my group from driving right up to, and on some holes, on the greens.
The layout, while having some decent views of Mauna Kea and the ocean, unfortunately is either surrounded by housing (the back nine) or a construction zone (the front nine, around which new homes currently being constructed.) The fairways are wide and in decent shape, but there is very little room off of the fairway and penal grasses laying in wait just off the fairway. Unfortunately, for me, this reminded me too much of any resort course in Southern California to be on my "must play" list on the Big Island.
Great potential
Played this on our second day in Hawaii and what a surprise. Wonderful layout with grass defined fairways. fairways were firm so you got a good roll, but this was partly because of less watering. Manageable elevation changes with ample fairways. Miss them and it was punishing due to the tall native grasses.
Greens rolled nicely and were well maintained. I believe this is a Palmer design and with a bit more maintenance it could be a gem. The cost is an estimate as it was part of a 2 round package with Mauna Kea. Definitely worth including in a gold week.
Fun course, had a great day
Played Hapuna in April 2018. Our day was pretty great, pace of play was fantastic, no one in front of us and no pressure from behind. Course layout is pretty cool, lots of great views. It's set in the foothills above the ocean so not actually on any oceanfront property. Some construction going on for new home plots but it never bothered us. Greens, fairways were pure and rough wasn't punishing so you could play from everywhere. Only criticism is for a resort course they should give a little more room off the tee, some of the tough par 4's are pretty tight and unforgiving unless you are swinging driver well. I lost more balls than I expected but that's my fault due to making poor swings. Hybrids and irons off tees are options in a lot of places but will make some holes into the wind play really hard. Can't compare to Mauna Kea or Mauna Lani as I didn't play but rate is bargain compared to those other premier ocean courses. No restaurant on site just Bev cart which is decent. Showers available which was great after a long day in the hot sun. Staff was really nice and took good care of us. Overall a great experience. If you want a great challenge, chill experience, and great views for $160 this is a great value and choice.
Breathtaking
This was a wonderful course. From every hole you can see the Ocean. While the greens were not the best they still rolled relatively smooth. The course layout though was very nice and challenges a skilled golfer. If you are looking for views, this is definitely the course the play.
Greens are a wreck!
Was so excited to play this Moana Kea sister course, and the course layout and views were amazing. The greens absolutely sucked! They must have some sort of fungus, as they were under repair, bumpy, scalped and just flat terrible. Very disappointing to play and not have in better conditions. Definitely lost some strokes between both my buddy and I because of the green conditions.
Palmer Design
Fun track! We played twice while visiting. Our first round there was no wind and the course played fairly easy. We had so much fun we returned two days to play in 50 mile per hour winds.I️ shot 79 from the orange tee and 86 from the blue tees in the wind. They were fixing some issues with greens but the staff was fun !
No Wind Checks For You
We knew we were in for an interesting day when the big sign in the pro shop said "No Wind Checks".
Russell was the cart guy and starter and he was very helpful.
The trade winds were forecast to hit the Big Island at 10 AM and they were going to have wind gusts of 40 to 50 MPH. They appeared right on schedule.
The course is in amazing shape. Fairways, tee boxes, and greens were pristine.
Today the Hapuna course was Mr.Hyde and Dr. Jekyll.
The front side was all uphill into elevated greens and a howling wind that rocked our carts. The wind had the ball oscillating on the tee. Golf gloves and scorecards were flying off in every direction. Putting was tough because the ball would not stop.
Tee shots were difficult because the wind wanted to knock you off kilter.
The back side was more like Dr.Jekyll. We had the wind at our back and if you tagged your shot you picked up another 30 yards. The downside was it was tough to hold the green on approach shots.
We had a fun time here. The views of the ocean and the mountains are amazing. Several groups packed it in because of the winds.
We enjoyed our visit and look forward to returning.
Hapuna is one of the top three golf courses on the Big Island.
Awful
The greens are dried out and bumpy from aeration. Heavy equipment breaking rocks and moving materials was a distraction on a number of holes. We also had to wait for a truck on the course to move before we could tee off. Dust and water blowing from the construction site was irritating. It's a shame because the course layout and fairways are nice.
Two thumbs down!
Great layout, greens not good
Overall this is a fun course but you should not play here for a couple more weeks. The greens were plugged and sanded and right now they are brown and bouncy.
Hidden Gem
Play this course! It's beautiful, great scenery and I'm excellent condition.
Pure greens, challenging layouts and a lot of fun
Don't recommend
The fairways and greens are not in good shape. No GPS. Not the friendliest staff. Other than for the scenery there's nothing here worth the money they are asking for. Skip this course.
Hapuna
I have to rent clubs, whicho are old Taylor Made models, not optimal to play the corse. Overall the course was in a very good shape
Great experience
This was a fun golf course, with great views from several holes and a good layout. Fairways were very good, greens were great, a bit too fast maybe, but rolled true and held well. Staff were very good, overall a great experience and great value.
Delightful Course
Beautifully located with stunning views over the Pacific. Well maintained course and fun to play...not so challenging as to be stressful just to keep the ball in play. Courteous and friendly staff. A real value on the Big Island. Well worth the money and I will definitely play this again.
Wonderful Golf Course
You can spend hundreds of dollars to play Mauna Lani or Mauna Kea or less to play some relatively average courses or you can pay a reasonable amount (for a Hawaii resort course) to play Hapuna, a wonderful course and first class operation. It has interesting terrain, wonderful views and a very interesting golf course that challenges you on the fairways and on the greens. While reasonably challenging, there are safe areas on every hole if you want to play safe. It is well conditioned with excellent greens. A fun course to play.
The staff is helpful, range balls are included as are a well iced up cooler with bottled water for each player. They do not nickel and dime you for the extras.
My only criticism is that they could have a few more options on the tee boxes. a few combo tees would help. 6600 yds is a little long for some while 6000 could be short. Then you go down to 5000 yards.
Enjoyable
The course was in good condition and the staff was very laid back. Nice view on several holes and got a kick out of the resident goats roaming the grounds.
Amazing
I have played all the big name courses in Hawaii and this beats them all. Better views, better layout and grest price if you play the afternoon.
A Must Play
I will play this course every time I'm on the Big Island.
I played behind two foursomes and still finished in 3 hours. The course was in immaculate shape. It offered a variety of tees for any playing ability. And has a fantastic layout that I found to be quite fun.
You could easily go out at 2-2:30 and get in a full 18.
It's worth every penny.
Great day
I played Hapuna on a very windy day, but made the best of it. I thought the course was in top notch condition and many of holes are certainly "photo-ops".Gorgeous scenery.
