Ka'anapali Kai
About
The Ka'anapali Resort on Maui is home to two championship golf courses, set on 1,200 acres of land home to ancient Hawaiian royalty. The Ka'anapali Kai course is an Arthur Jack Snyder design from 1976 that received an extensive renovation in 2005. The golf course is shorter and has a lower slope/rating compared to its sister Royal Ka'anapali course, but also plays narrower in most spots. Many holes are tucked into the West Maui Mountains The golf course is women-friendly with a forward set of "Hibiscus" tees at 4,522 yards, and also less expensive to resort guests and visitors compared to Royal Ka'anapali, which has played host to numerous professional events.

Would not pay full price.
We paid $57 for a afternoon round. I think that is what this course is worth. Ok views of the ocean.
The course is sloped so most fairways if not played right will roll sideways so a great tee shot could end up bad. I guess they let the staff know who got deals and you are treated differently. Though the greens where in nice shape.
A Good Alternative to the Royal Course
If you want to play multiple rounds in Kaanapali, try the Kai course. It is a little shorter than the Royal, but the difference is limited to the par fours. So long as the trade winds are blowing, the Kai will be challenging for most. It was a great value for me because I got an unusually low green fee. The bunkers needed more sand, but they should get more during the maintenance scheduled for late May. The holes have good variety.
Maui golf fun
Staff is amazing and welcoming. High tech amenities and gc in great condition. Thank you for a great experience.
Choices to golf in Maui
I was paired up with an older couple where the wife was a novice. It was very hard to focus so I politely moved ahead as a single. I went through two other couples and was finished in 3 hours. It was extremely windy and that made it more of a challenge however the course was wide open and not too long. The greens were fast and in great shape. I thought it was a bit overpriced for the value as I played Kahili three days earlier for half the price and found the course more challenging and more picturesque.
1st time at Kaanapali
We thought that the course was not worth $99 we paid to play. There are much better courses for less money on the island. The bunkers really need more sand and work.
Good Resort Course
Played around 11:30 starter got us out a little early on the Kai course. Hooked up with a nice couple from Mass. Jim & Doreen (shout out) good sticks! They did a food job on the course considering the wind storm the previous night, had all the palm leaves and coconuts piled on the sides of the fairways. NBD! Cart girl was working double duty on both courses so we loaded up! We were told ahead of time. This course has a lot of slope to it not too much wind this time,we were lucky, and greens were in great shape! Easier of the 2 courses try and book on GNow to save some bucks! Plays up in the hills for the most part but still some great views !!
Great round of golf on the day of arrival on Maui
I thoroughly enjoyed my round of golf here at Kaanapali Kai. The staff was very friendly and accomodating, and the person I was paired with was an average golfer like myself, so we had a great time.
The course was in great shape, and the great weather certailny helped set the tone. I would have come back for a replay another day if I had been on the island longer.
Slow play and over priced
This was the second and probably the last time we play this course. We left the course after 5 hours and only 15 holes played. A 5 1/2 hour round is ridiculous, even for a resort course. The carts have GPS so the pace of play could be easily monitored, but this was obviously not a priority on this day. On the positive side, the staff we met at the clubhouse and starter shack very helpful and friendly.
The clubhouse facilities are excellent and one of Maui's better restaurants, Roy's, is located on site. The carts are battery operated, quiet, and are equipped with an accurate and easy to read GPS system.
The greens had recently been sanded, and are in good condition, but the fairways are heavily played and the grass is thin in areas. The sand in the traps is not the quality or quantity you would expect on a course that wants to charge visitors nearly $200 per round.
All in all, this course is overpriced for what it offers and there are better golf experiences for the dollar on Maui.
Hawaii Golf
To play golf in Maui, this is one of the great places to play next to the Royal. Wish they bring back the Skin's Game. If they do I'll come back next year.
This course is not hard and laid out for the average golfer.
Affordable Maui resort golf on the Kai course at Kaanapali
The Kaanapali Kai course didn't host a Champions Tour event like its sister course, Royal Kaanapali, did for many years.
But the Kai - host of a 'Big Break' televised by The Golf Channel - gives golfers a similar taste of resort golf on Maui without the higher green fee.
I played the Kaanapali Kai course in 2011, but haven't played the Royal course, so I can't compare the two. Obviously, it plays shorter and slight easier (being a 6,388-yard par-70).
There's nice movement in the land, and the Sugar Cane Train that passes by adds a nice Hawaiian touch.
Good Resort Course
Good course with receptive fairways. Greens in good condition. Some elevation changes to make shots challenging. Overcast on my day of play, but there are several holes that present iconic Maui views. A course I typically play at least once while here for vacation.
greens were difficult to read--especially speed
Lived up to it's rep with wide fairways. Difficult to get out of the grass in the short rough. The ball sinks down into this rough.
Nice course easy to play with wide fairways and nice views
This is the sister course of Royal Kaanapali. It is a little less interesting than Royal, but the greens are more interesting. They do have tees boxes at 5500 yards, so it gave me better option as a female rather than the shorter tees.
We enjoyed the day.
Hot, humid day. I'm glad they provided towels!
Very pleasant experience. As a single, they combined me with another couple at a much earlier time even though I paid twilight rates. Efficient staff. Pace of play was excellent - our 3-some finished in @ 3.5 hours, even with a 4-some I front of us.
Fun course
Course was fun to play, placing your tee shot was paramount, would have been nice to know when I booked this course that that had aerated the greens, but they rolled pretty good.
Beautiful course with even better views!
I played both coarses and I liked the Kai because it seemed a little more forgiving. The staff was fantastic. They saw me walking from a nearby hotel and came with a cart to get me.
I love this course.
Kaanapali Kai is always a favorite course to play when I am on Maui. The course and greens are in great condition, and the staff is extremely friendly. I love this course!
