Ka'anapali Kai
About
The Ka'anapali Resort on Maui is home to two championship golf courses, set on 1,200 acres of land home to ancient Hawaiian royalty. The Ka'anapali Kai course is an Arthur Jack Snyder design from 1976 that received an extensive renovation in 2005. The golf course is shorter and has a lower slope/rating compared to its sister Royal Ka'anapali course, but also plays narrower in most spots. Many holes are tucked into the West Maui Mountains The golf course is women-friendly with a forward set of "Hibiscus" tees at 4,522 yards, and also less expensive to resort guests and visitors compared to Royal Ka'anapali, which has played host to numerous professional events.

Maui beaches! Photo submitted by u000005546095 on 02/17/2013
I love this course.
Kaanapali Kai is always a favorite course to play when I am on Maui. The course and greens are in great condition, and the staff is extremely friendly. I love this course!
Nice golf!
Beyond the gorgeous views, this course was a pleasure to play. Enough challenge with water and sand, yet friendly to the less skilled of us. Overall experience was awesome, we hope to get back to play again.
Good course to play if you can get a deal.
Pretty wide-open course, but the winds can put a damper on your game if you're not used to it. Course was in great shape, but the greens seemed to be a little long which rolled really slow. They probably would've rolled better if I showed up on a day they had just been mowed. I'm not sure if I would play this course again and pay the regular rate. I would say 75% of your green fee goes towards the scenery. The scenery on many of the holes was great. The staff there was nice. If you get a good deal, I would recommend this course.
a beautiful course that was a joy to play
the greens were quick but true and in perfect shape. the fairways were very nice. the homes bordering the course were very high end and had great landscaping. ocean views on almost every hole. quiet and not very busy. good sand in bunkers. friendly and attentive cart girl.
Nicely improved.
I played this course a few years ago and it was dry and brown. It is in much better shape now (June 2013). It's beautiful and a joy to play!
Hawaii Gem
The staff is very helpful and the views are some of the best on the island. Thank you Golf Now for a great day on the links.
Great course. Greens were very good
Golf course was really nice. Only issue was a local group of players that wouldn't let us play through.
Perfect warm up course
Pace of play on a Wednesday was ideal. It was my first course I played on my trip and being that it was fairly forgiving it was the perfect way to warm up for harder more pricey courses to come in the week.
Going downhill
The Kai course needs attention. sandtraps are in need of sand.It also needs washrooms. only has 1 set of Portolets on the course. It really doesn't feel like a resort course as you rarely see the refrreshment cart.
Not a Good Value
The course is way too expensive for what you get. The wind was rediculous on the day I played and there was a terrible sewer stench on several holes near the clubhouse.
Brutal Greens & Wind
Overall the course was challenging but the greens and wind were brutal and made it very challenging! The greens were so fast and I had a difficult time reading them. I received some conflicting advice from a pro article saying the greens did not always break towards the sea, but they did! I swear it looked uphill but the ball rolled right towards the ocean every time.
The wind can be very strong, I played in Feb during the trade winds. Sometimes the 5 iron was good for 200 plus or 140, crazy!
If you are a dead eye on the greens and don’t mind the wind you will do well, I struggled but hey, its golf in Maui!
Liked: Golf in Maui, layout, condition, staff, great bar, close to hotel.
Dislike: sand bunkers, sand bunkers, glass like greens
Decent course.
Had to keep carts on paths because of wet conditions. This always makes for a longer and more challenging round.
ok course
only one place to get water , Way to maney people took forever.2/
Good price for West Maui
Great deal for prime time. Great golf partners. Pricey club rentals but probably "par for the course". Wouldn't have gone without GolfNow.
Great resort course
Resort course the way it's supposed to be. Great condition, nice views, and fun golf. I'm a 12 handicap, shot 82 from white tees and had a great time. Single digits should play back tees. Pretty open with easy to hit fairways. Greens are typical Maui grain and good size. Good shot to green rewarded, lot of greenside bunkers for others. Minimum of blind shots, some elevation change and wind does affect shots. A great time, and a good staff.
great when the wind is not blowing
played afternoon. very fortunate the wind was not blowing.Views were great. very fortunate to have finished before dark. played bogey golf which is par for me. MUST remember that the ball breaks toward the ocean, no matter which way the green slants!!!
Not what it used to be!
I have been playing this course for years as a visitor, but was very disappointed this year mainly because of the pace of play and the fact that there was no ranger to correct the reasons for the slow play!
Had fun at the least expensive option in Lahaina
I discovered that golf in Maui was more expensive than I like to pay, so opted for the least expensive option, the Kai course after one o'clock. Had fun, a medium quality layout. the greens were some type of heavy grass that I was not used to, and I found them difficult to read and putt. I greatly prefer the golf courses in Kauai; less expensive, more beautiful, and excellent fast greens. That said, I'll probably play the Kai again for the same reasons as above
Average course, very convenient location in Maui
The Kai course was in good shape and played like an above average muni. However, it is a fairly short course. I played the tips and it was still just 6,380 yards. The fairways were well-maintained, and although they had a little slope, I felt most of my lies were fairly even. The greens were well-maintained and fairly easy to read and control your speed. In general, the Kai course is on the forgiving and easy to score side. The staff here was also very nice - including the people in the pro shop, the guys who prep the cart, and the cart girls who serve food.
For comparison, I played the Kapalua Plantation course a few days before - and the Kai course is very easy in comparison. Kapalua fairways all had major slope and greens were incredibly fast, with minute contours that were very hard to read.
The only downside about Kai is the price. The course isn't really worth paying $150-200, but then again, you're paying for the location in Maui. I was staying in Kaanapali - and played here because I didn't want to drive 45+ minutes. I'd consider playing here again if I found another good deal on golfnow.
