The Preserve at Oak Meadows

About
Formerly Oak Meadows Golf Course, The Preserve at Oak Meadows reopened in 2017 with a new name and following extensive renovations over a two-year span. Formerly a 27-hole layout on 288 acres, the transformation was a conservation and recreation project by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County that took the 1920s-era design and modernized it for drainage and environmental sensitivity. From a playability standpoint, conditions will be more durable in the face of flooding, while eco-friendly highlights include improved water quality within Salt Creek, increased local flood relief by 20 million gallons and the enhancement of an environmental refuge for both golfers and wildlife.

Great Re-do of the course
I had not played the course since the redesign.. Il love the natural areas and the overall design. I’m looking forward to playing the course again soon!
This course could be great, but it’s not!
The course layout and grooming were great, except the greens. I thought the greens were super inconsistent. Like they have never been rolled. Speeds were different on every green.
No cart girl, only a house positioned in the middle of a few holes, and the house didn’t have cigars. This place could be good with cart girl and improving the greens, otherwise, not a great place for customer golf.
Love the Re-Design! A "Must Play" in Chicago
Had not played the new Preserve at Oak Meadows since its massive re-design a few years ago. The layout is fabulous. Several of the old holes from Oak Meadow have been refashioned and blend in perfectly with the new upgrades to the Preserve. The course used to get hammered during storms, making it unplayable and carts out of the question. Different story after the redesign. We played the afternoon after a storm. While the course was definitely wet, it was still in great condition with the tees, greens and most of the fairways offering ideal playing conditions. The staff in the Pro Shop and Grill were extremely friendly and welcoming and dedicated to ensuring I have an ideal experience. In fact, I forgot to bring a towel to wash-off my clubs and the starter tracked one down for me to borrow during my round. That's 5-star customer service. I'll definitely return and would recommend any serious golfer seek out this refurbished gem in the Chicago suburbs.
Nice
Fun and challenging course. If you’re bad off the tee box, don’t play this course, it will eat you up. Fun time.
Beautiful course & layout!
We loved everything about the course except for the amount of pitch marks on the greens. Will be back but hope they address this
Dybo's take
Good value, staff, and course layout/conditions. Will come back.
Great layout. Getting close to being a top 5
My group has been playing this course from the tournament tees for two years. We are all low to scratch players and enjoy the challenge of a good layout combined with good conditions. In its inaugural year last year, the course just simply was not ready. The fairways were spotty and the greens were spotty.
Move the clock forward and a year later, ther fairways are in fantastic shape. The greens, although not spotty, are still a bit spongy and inconsistent in speed. That being said, the overall condition i is much better this year.. one can excuse the greens since it generally ytakes a few years befo re the root structure is secure. Once the greens have another year under their belt, we woul love to see the grounds staff roll and cut the greens a bit tighter.
On to the course. The usage of the old course, especially on. 1, 5,6 & 7, 18 with the addition of new thoughtfully layer put holes provides a nice challenge. Number 9 which usually plays into a southern wind, provides a very good challenge to complete the front 9. And then there is number 10. The tournament tees have you an average of 225 to the pink with the wind often coming right back into you. Make a par there and you feel like you have gained at least one on your team mates. There are a number of holes on the back that stretch your confidence due to strategically placed traps and trees. The finish on 17 and 18 will definitely test your resolve to close out a good round.
The practice facility is top notch for a public course. In addition to a well maintained range for full shots, there are two nice practice areas for the short game whether you would like to chip or work on your sand game. The course is still supposed to break ground on a clubhouse this October overlooking the 10th tee and 18th green. That will definitely complete the course versus the mobile home currently in place for the 19th hole
The pace of play can vary. Too many people take on tees that are not suited for their skill level. This is not a course for a beginner. However their are plenty of options for experienced golfers of all skill levels. Just play the right teees.
Great course layout but lack of a club house combined new green conditions narrowly keep it out of the top 5 public golf experiences behind Cantigny, Stonewall Orchard, Makray, Thunderhawk and Cog #4.
This is the second time I've played here since it's been redone. It's a fantastic layout and very fair. I thought the course was in great shape.
Awesome layout
The course is looking better and better every year since reopened just a very fair and fun layout.
Most improved course conditions from prior year
Played the Preserve twice last year (2018). Enjoyed the new layout but the conditions were subpar so to speak. Way too many spots where there was ground under repair. Even late in the season of ‘18 there was no improvement.
Moving forward to 7/15/19. Spoke to the starter and he stated they tried a certain seed or top dressing that didn’t work, however, early spring 2019 they got it right. Played the track and they certainly did. Overall very very impressed on how immaculate the conditions were. From tee to green I was floored.
Price at 70 bucks with cart on weekend hit the sweet spot for the type of layout and conditions. Pace of play was fantastic with no issues.
Course is above average difficulty so don’t bring anybody who is new to the game. With the slightly higher price and the tougher conditions it should keep away the newbies.
Greens looked fabulous but were running slower than they looked but rolled very true so no issues at all.
An above poster said something about the carts. Not sure why because they’re very nice with GPS. All they need is signage to show you where the carts will cutoff.
The big websites say this is a top 10 course now. Do I agree? No, but definitely in my top 15 without question.
Well done Preserve.
great course a little pricey
Enjoyed the course pace of play was perfect .It was alittle pricey for the area
Course and staff were fantastic
