The Woodlands Golf Club
About
Woodlands Golf Club, which sits only 30 minutes from St. Louis, is known for having some of the area's best greens. The putting surfaces roll true and hold well on the approach. This public course has garnered a local following thanks to not only its green conditions but also the affordable rates. With a diverse landscape and unique hole designs, it's definitely a shot-maker's layout. You'll probably use every club in your bag on this golf course. A long creek winds across the entire layout, coming into play on a few holes. There are also strategically placed bunkers that lurk along the greensides. Although Woodlands Golf Club is relatively short at just over 6,400 yards from the back tees, it feels much longer thanks to a variety of elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic.

Terrible pace of play
If you have 6 hours to waste go ahead. Hack city out here. Tees off 30 minutes late because tee times I guess don’t matter on Saturday morning. Some group outing in front of us playing a scramble were absolutely terrible golfers. One guy must have thought he was a pro and was one of the worst golfers I have ever seen. More than 3 groups waiting on almost 7 out of 18 holes. Then the groups had the nerve to play a 6 some on 18 on the way in. 18 almost took 40 minutes to play. Complete disrespect to all the golfers behind them. We were yelling at them to get off the green on 18 it was that bad. If you want a place with no golf etiquette and a bunch of hacks that take forever to play and think they own the course. This is for you. Will not be going out here for a long long time.
Incredibly slow play
Won’t be coming out here for a long time. Tee times don’t really matter since no one abides by them. Almost 6 hours to play. Supposedly there was some outing (group of 30 awful golfers) playing a scramble in front of us. Never have I seen such an awful display of disrespect for other golfers behind them. Then on 18 the last group of the scramble decided to play a 6 some and took almost 37 minutes to play 18 and wouldn’t get off the green. One guy thought he was a professional and played a Wilson driver.... hack city out here. Don’t play here unless you have 5-6 hours to waste. Golf etiquette doesn’t exist out here.
Course changes in work
Course has made a change to start on the old No. 9 and finish the first 9 holes on old No. 8. Then start the back nine on the old No, 1. A good change! now you can stop at the clubhouse at the turn. Course is ni the early stages of adding a driving range. Also a positive.
The only drawback Saturday was that the course could have used a good mow. Fairways were a bit clumpy at times and sometimes hard to find the ball in the fairway. Also all Tee markers are not changed yet making it a little confusing if you haven't played before.
I think if you enjoyed the course before, you will like the new changes when they are complete.
The perfect place to play
The course is coming together nicely with the new owners. Outstanding improvements and a clear path to greatness in the future. I’ll play this course numerous times this summer.
No Starter= Bad Pace
I’ve heard good things about this course, so I was surprised to have an awful experience. Pulling in to the course parking lot I could already see that the course was in bad shape. The employee that was helping us at the pro shop was friendly and did help us on our way after a lot of questions. The first thing asked was if I had been there before, which I had not. They then offered no information until I asked about it. When I arrived at the first tee box I was greeted with a 10 group pile up waiting to tee off. That is unacceptable at any course. There is no reason a group should have to wait at least 30 minutes to tee off. After waiting I decided it was not worth my time to play the course and decided to leave. I will not be returning and be wary of very slow pace if you are to play at this course.
Improved
This course is a bit rough in some areas with construction going on. Fairways and greens were MUCH improved since i was there last year. Would not have gone back except for a Golf Now special offer. Glad I did, course has character and with some more care would really be nice. Overall fun course to play but a bit far unless you live in IL or N. STL Cnty..
Decent course near Alton
Woodland is a slightly above average course for St. Louis located north of Alton. If I lived near Alton I would keep it in my rotation of courses to play, but otherwise it is probably not worth the drive.
Pros: Very nice tee boxes and greens (though greens somewhat soft), very friendly staff, fair amount of elevation changes, good pace of play
Cons: Very bumpy golf cart path with lots of puddles in the middle, overall I would say the course does not appear to drain well as both the fairways and sand traps were very wet
First time at the Woodlands
My brother n law and I played on Sunday afternoon at the Woodlands for the first time. We're from STL so Alton is a bit of trek for us but we decided because it was a hot deal and I was willing to drive that we might as well check out a new course. For us city boys this was out in the sticks, but it's really a fun course. The front 9 in my opinion was easier than the back. Not a lot of water and the fairways are fairly wide open so if you shank a drive you can more than likely still play the ball. The back 9 has a creek that runs through several of the holes so you have to deal with that which demands more accuracy off the tee and will iron shots. The greens were rolling slow but they were in good shape. Pace of play is pretty much my pet peeve, I can't deal with standing around for 5 minutes between each shot, that's a quick way to blow a round. The course was wide open, we played at our pace and enjoyed the heck out of it. I left a lot of shots on the course, I'll be back to try to reduce my score now that I have a feel for the place.
Awesome Course
One of the most challenging course I've played this season. Looking forward to playing it after the renovations are completed.
Course has tight holes and wide open holes.
Really enjoyed the course. Now that i have played it an know the holes i can plan better on what to hit off the tee. Found a groupon that works on weekends after 10am and saved $15 a golfer. Greens and fairways are in great shape.
This course is kinda Quirky, but playable
For this time of year, the course is in pretty good shape. Greens were recently aerated, so a little bumpy, but not enough to downgrade them. The course is a little quirky, which means to me it kinda criss crosses around the countryside. Hole 4 is a par 3, you drive up to green, but after finished you have to drive back to tee to go to next hole. Some of the holes are very narrow driving. Some holes are quite short, so I would call this a shotmakers course.
Challenging course
Challenging and fun to play. Great course to improve on your golf game.
staff was extremely nice to us (myself & daughter)
course layout is not difficult nor long so you didn't need to use a driver off of most par4's.
Great Course
The course was in great condition--they arreated the greens, so putting was a little rough. Beautiful day to play golf
