Tornado Torn
Trees of all sizes were uprooted all around the course from last week's storm. Very interesting to see. In spite of that the course was in good condition. Enjoyed playing and will come back again soon.
The course has a great layout and the back nine is very tight, with a lot of tough holes.
The course is very challenging and the back nine is very tight, with some difficult holes. The course is fun and the greens roll well but are slow.
Donald Ross will be turning in his grave
This is a Donald Ross design, but alas it is being destroyed by poor maintenance. The fairways and greens are in very good condition. However, the sand bunkers , the tee complexes and the rough are in serious bad condition. I hope somebody will save this course.
Get What you Pay For
Calumet is still a challenging tract. As a former member, it is hard to see it in the condition its in but it still IS a Donald Ross design. The fairway bunkers are now overgrown so you want to avoid them because they still have sand bunker lips. Overall the greens and fairways are in good shape. Green #9 has some type of fungus so moving the pin must be tough on the staff. Pace of playing on this Saturday was quite good 3 1/2 hours to play as a twosome and could have gone quicker if one twosome wasn't playing practice shots with no one in front of them.
All in all, great for the price and still a very challenging tract to play.
Caulumet CC
Great layout 17 out of 18 greens are in good shape bunkers poor almost grassed over in many. Proud old school layout with nice views and setup. Maintenance of clubhouse facilities parking lot poor
Needs a little work and it’’ll be gem
First time playing CCC. I would have rated higher but every bunker is in need of attention; weeds and pebbles everywhere. The 9th green is destroyed. Rough was long enough but not too long. Greens were in good shape but really long, similar to putting on a shag carpet. Fairways were nice. Great design, you need every club, few holes are blind from the tee and others require strategy; perfect challenge for all skill levels. For $30 it exceeded my expectations. Will definitely be back.
Great Donald Ross lay out
This was a fun course to play, a great Donald Ross layout. Staff very friendly, professional and helpful. The greens were generally in great shape, about 10 on the Stimp. The only reasons I didn’t rate it a 5 are 1, the holes weren’t consistently marked or which direction the that the next hole is located. That it is okay for regulars, however, since I only played it once before 2 years ago it added time to my game and a little frustration. Also, there were weeds and grass growing the bunkers and a lack of rakes to rake the bunkers. Other than that it is a fun course to play and reasonable challenge.
A Course for Golfers to Appreciate
Having played here last year and now again, I can say that the course conditions are better. If you are someone who needs pristine manicured conditions then you should look elsewhere. But if you are a golfer that can see the beauty of an old school design and are up for a challenging test, then you have found it here. The course is destined for the bulldozer and redevelopment (sad) so don’t expect to be catered to with a lot of amenities, it’s just golf and that is it. Those who expect more from this course are there for the wrong reasons. Many bunkers are becoming more like waste or natural bunkers due to time and resources to maintain them as sand bunkers I’m sure. So play them as such. The job they have done maintaining this course with limited resources is impressive. It’s a shame that I see and hear golfers trashing the course. I imagine they are the ones that can’t see it.
