Ruffled Feathers Golf Club
About
Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Lemont is conveniently situated just a half hour outside downtown Chicago. Pete Dye and his son P.B. collaborated to design the course, making it the only Dye design in the Chicago area. A well thought-out strategy will be greatly rewarded on this challenging layout and bad shots made without any thought will be severely punished. This is definitely not a golf course where you can just grip it and rip it. The fairways are fairly straight and forgiving, but most of the approach shots play to tricky elevated greens. There are also strategically placed bunkers framing the greens and water hazards come into play on several holes as well. Ruffled Feathers Golf Club's par 3s have a reputation for being particularly challenging. But depending on how windy it is, the final hole might present the most formidable challenge.

Tough getting your ball stick on the greens
This Pete Dye designed course is beautiful and challenging. The only drawback I had was due to the slanting of the greens it is very difficult to STAY on the greens. You ball just rolls and rolls off many of the greens. Good shots hitting the green end up not being good shots on many holes.
Enjoyed Our Round/Rude Ranger
Had a great day on a beautiful course.
Course in good shape with the exception of several of the sand traps...Grass and weeds growing in them and were unplayable.
Starter was great and gave us several tips about the course which helped immensely. Ranger was not so friendly...came up to us without even saying hello or asking how our round was going and just said..."You guys having problems?" When I asked what he was referring to he said the 2 hole gap in front of and holding up a the groups behind us. If he would have checked the tee sheet he would have seen that there was a gap at the start...group ahead of us went out 20 minutes before us. As far as holding the groups up...We were a 4 some with a 3 behind us and 2 behind them. At no point was there a good point to let them play through, even at the turn as we all stopped to use the restroom and grab a drink. We made the turn in 2:10 and played in 4:15....Not bad for a 4 some on a course we were unfamiliar with. Had the ranger even been remotely polite I would have had no complaints but we felt rushed after his comments a bit irritated knowing we were actually playing a decent pace. FYI...Guys behind had no issues, I made a point of asking them after the round!
Yardage book
I played this course for the first time. A course layout is definitely great and fairly challenging. Just to improve experience (and also speed) for the first-timer, it may be a good idea to put a yardage book on a cart. Since some holes have invisible landing area from the tee, and also there are may sand traps over the course, it would be more fun and speedy if we knew how many yardages and to where we wanted to hit. In some cases, it was difficult to decide what kind of shots we want. I lost some balls which I thought was hit decently.
Great course to play.
Great course to play. Challenging but fair. Must keep ball in play and you should do well. Greens on the day I played fast and required getting use to the first couple of holes. Definitely a must play if not played before. I will play it again. Staff was friendly and they were set up for a safe non contact experience.
Prejudice Staff
I’ve been golfing here for a while now and my first couple experiences was not to bad the course is well manicured and kept up with although the problem occurred in the pro shop. We had a group outing one time involved with our church members and staff, knowing that it can be chaotic sometimes with a lot of guys in the club house we have all the staff more then enough space and time to get us all out and not have any complications. The first problem happened when I was asking one of the staff members if it was ok for my 12 and 16 year old nephews to spectate the tournament that day and he became very ignorant and told us that there’s to many of “You People” asking for to much so I responded to the attitude by asking him what he meant and he then told me you Mexicans drove us nuts. I got very upset and then proceeded to tell the guys to leave because the worker was prejudice. So about 2 days later I called and spoke to a manager and he was very understanding and apologized for the inconvenience and offered us 2 rounds of golf for free. The second problem recently happened today June 28 2020, I called to make a tee time and the guy sounded very frustrated but proceeded to ask what time. I told him we would be coming in at 1:20 and then he asked how many golfers and what’s your name so I can make the tee time, this is when it happened, I gave him my name (which is a Mexican last name) and he then told me that i should just book online. I then told him that I was there the week before and paid in cash there at the course and he told me he did t know what to do for me and proceeded to be very ignorant over the phone. I then asked to speak to a manager as I was infuriated because I felt it was a prejudice thing again, I notified the manager what happened and he was apologizing over and over again and told me that they have a lot of new staff members and he don’t know why they acted that was as they do take phone tee times. So this was my experience with this golf facility and it was very excruciating to be treated the way I was. I would highly recommend that no one of the Hispanic heritage not golf here because they are very prejudice and obnoxious.
General Overview
Starter/Ranger: Very nice and friendly
Course: Nice layout but rough much too high for the average golfer.
Big Disappointment: I used a gift certificate given to me for my retirement. When I get to the course I find out that there are no rainchecks given. So with the gift certificate of $75 and cart for I think $27.98 we got to play 9 holes before it began to rain. Why then would I even consider going back to play this course? this was a rip off in my mind.
Course conditikns
Tee boxes are horrible.
Lots of area with long grass - seeds on grass.
Browned out greens
Horrible Condition
This course is in really poor shape. The rough is super overgrown and looks like a backyard. Clumps of dead grass all over the place. Sand traps are full of rocks and unplayable. Such a shame for what used to be a good course.
Nice course, nice people.
I have always enjoyed playing this course. The fairways are in great shape, but the rough is rather thick, due to all the rain. I guess like most courses, it plays easier from the fairways. This is definitely one of the best public courses around.
Disappointed
I’ve been playing here for years and this is the worst I’ve seen the course. Combined deep ruff with clumps of grass clippings make for some Andes strokes.
Played here the other day, course is in great shape. Would recommend to anyone.
Good Course w/ Subpar Management
I've played this course several times now since I've moved to Chicago in '16. It's always busy. Popular choice for company outings. Pace of play is decent, but the course plays long. When it's packed, they don't manage it well with course rangers. It's typically well maintained and usually a cheaper alternative to some of the other more pricier courses in the area.
I had one negative experience where I called to reserve a tee time for a foursome. Friends of mine in the wanted to know the price upfront, so I looked up their rates online ahead of time. When we showed up for the round, the person who took our payment tried to charge us for a higher rate than was advertised on their site. It was a $20 difference. I even showed him the online rates posted on their own website (not a third party site) and he still kept arguing with me. I had to ask for his manager to honor our rates, but both still made me feel like I was somehow in the wrong. I was shocked at how disrespectful they were.
Upgrade from my 5/4/18 review & play
Course was in decent shape given all the rains this season. It wasn't that wet and no cart restrictions but that could change going forward. Thankfully the greens were very receptive.....when they are dried out this course can play next to impossible. A day to day thing. Overall the course was in better shape than it was last year except for the sand traps - so numerous it's impossible to maintain all of them. Upgrading from 3 to 3.75 stars. Pace of play was excellent with a 10am time and finished in 4 hours. If you're not a really accomplished player do yourself a huge favor and play the gold tees versus the blue tees. Many of the challenges are still there except you'll have a chance to use your shorter more accurate irons for approach shots - still over a 130 slope from the golds. Ruffled Feathers is the only Dye course in the Chicagoland area so it's an interesting track to play one or two times a year. On weekends expect a 5 hour plus death march - the course is way to difficult for less skilled and they'll easily lose a dozen balls. Recommended when you can play early mid-morning on a weekday so you don't stand around a lot and worry about where your ball might go for 5 minutes on every shot. Any more than $40 is a tad steep for this one. Maybe $45 but I'd never pay $80 plus on a weekend here. Range & practice area. Clubhouse is okay and didn't look as worn out as it did last year. Mike the bartender is a lot of fun post round.
Incredibly Over Priced
This was my third time playing here, and overall I enjoy the course. It is quite challenging, but still an enjoyable course. That being said, to charge $80 (which doesn't include warm up balls by the way) for a soaked course with brown spots on many of the greens and bunkers that were all washed away in bad condition is a sham. This should've been a 50-60 dollar round this time of year with the condition of the course.
