Ruffled Feathers Golf Club
About
Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Lemont is conveniently situated just a half hour outside downtown Chicago. Pete Dye and his son P.B. collaborated to design the course, making it the only Dye design in the Chicago area. A well thought-out strategy will be greatly rewarded on this challenging layout and bad shots made without any thought will be severely punished. This is definitely not a golf course where you can just grip it and rip it. The fairways are fairly straight and forgiving, but most of the approach shots play to tricky elevated greens. There are also strategically placed bunkers framing the greens and water hazards come into play on several holes as well. Ruffled Feathers Golf Club's par 3s have a reputation for being particularly challenging. But depending on how windy it is, the final hole might present the most formidable challenge.

Great last minute internet rate
I hadn't played the course in awhile. The course was in good shape except for certain greens that were pot marked with un repaired ball marks.
Great challenging course with Horrible conditions.
Ruffled feathers is a very challenging technical course. But it is in horrible condition. I have been to chicago park district and cook county forest preserve courses that are in better condition. The tee boxes like cheap driving range boxes. There is crab grass on the fringe of the green. and the greens were all tore up also.
Basically if I paid $20 bucks for it I wouldnt have been happy. I play cog hill regularly for the same money as RF, and Cog is is 10X better shape,
One of the worst conditions I have been to. I feel it is a waste to have such a challenging and technical course to be in such condition.
I will not be going back!
Challenging layout, every hole had a little different twist.

Natural environment and course architecture blended very well.
You do not have to use driver on all the par 4 and 5's.
Sand trap placement and water hazards came into play quite often.
Bad Move by Starter!
It has been several years since I played here. The price attracted me so I called 2 more golfers and we played. After paying for the round I told the desk clerk we were going to the driving range. We assumed the range balls were on the range, but had to go back to the club house, annoying!
The course was about 15 minutes late on our tee time, but quickly picked up pace. The tee boxes were beaten up but still manageable. The rest of the course played fine, rough was challenging and the greens were cut close and fast.
The starter came to us at the turn and told us there was going to be a couple minute delayed. We figured it was the group ahead of us, but He put a two some in front of us! These two guys were not seasoned players either, 2 Balls each on the tee, and very slow from that point forward.
We have never seen such a bad move by a starter, we had a grate pace going and there went the game.
We are not recommending this course due to this move by staff.
Great Course
I love this course. Very beautiful and challenging. The only negative is the lack of sand in some of the traps.
Could be much better
This could be a great place to play. The greens were beat up pretty bad. Sand traps were all rock with only a few with sand in them. This was disappointing compared to the last time I played here.
Bad shape
I am not sure what happened to this course, used to be in great shape but was just awful on July 29. The bunkers had no sand, just pebbles and most of the greens were burnt and covered in ball marks. The rough was all weeds, this course used to be one of the best groomed courses in the Chicagoland area. Was always a bit pricey, but now it is in bad shape and still pricey.
Traditonal Pete Dye course. Great greens good fairways. The bunkers could of used a little sand but otherwise all in great shape

For the Golf Now prices, this course is a great deal, however, do not go there thinking this is the same Ruffled Feathers 5 years ago.
When I saw Golf Now offer this course at a discount, I was thrilled to return here after several years to play. To my dismay, I was shocked to see a once first class golf course decline into a slightly above average gold course. This is not the same pristine, immaculately maintained course it once was in the past, however, for the price we payed through Golf Now, it was still a good deal. To a course that was considered once as a top course in Illinois with manicured perfection amongst Cog, Pine Meadow, Stonewall Orchard, this clearly has taken a step down form those courses. Layout is amazing and it is a true Pete Dy course, but brown patchy greens, and torn up tee boxes definitely gave the impression this course is not being taken care of.
For the price it is great, but do not expect Ruffled Feathers of the past. Round also took 5+ hours, and for a reputation this course likes to keep, there is no customer service or attempt to keep play moving.
WHY, WHY, WHY.......
Why are they letting this course go? this USED to be a premier course in Chicago and a must play for most Chicago golfers. I was so surprised about how bad the course and facilities look!!!! Clubhouse apparel was non existent and workers were non existent. For $90 course you should get FREE range balls and hit off grass, not get charged and hit off matts. The course is falling apart...weeds on the tee boxes and the tee boxes all chewed up. The fairways were a little better than the tee boxes but the greens were horrible. This is a $50 course AT BEST so don't overpay!!! This was depressing playing this course...Parking lot empty on a Saturday at 11a.m for ruffled...never would have thought that.
Great course with nice hole layouts
The course layout is very nice. All holes are designed differently and need shots from left to right and the other way as well. Challenging par 3s and reachable par 5s. As good as the fairways were, the greens need work. Lot of un-repaired ball marks and the speed of the greens was fairly slow.
Nice course, terrible bunkers
I like to play this course. But I don't play it frequently enough to remember how terrible the bunkers are. The sand in the bunkers could do damage to your clubs. Bunkers contain pebbles, and even some rocks larger than a golf ball. Other than that, the course is in very good shape. And playing on a Monday mid morning, the pace was incredible.
Too busy.
We played on a Sunday around 3pm. I appreciate that weekends are busy, but there were simply too many people on the course. We had to wait at every tee box and most long approach shots. On top of that, there was a group on our heels the entire round.
Course has great layout, but the greens were pretty beat up. There were several greens that had 5+ divots that hadn't been prepared.
Do not spemd more than $50
I think if Pete Dye saw the current conditions of the course he’d ask to have his name removed. I love the course layout but the course conditions are a joke for the green fees they ask for. The Tee boxes look like your standard municipal 9 hole golf course, infested with weeds and unrepaired divots. Fairways for the most part are good but show some signs of burnout in key areas. The rough is nothing more than weeds and grass. Sand traps are almost criminal for what they have done with them, if they have sand in them its rocky sand, most traps had standing water and mud in them. Greens are fast but filled with unrepaired ball marks. I’ve been golfing at Ruffled Feathers for over 10 years and have really noticed the down-hill trend the past 3 years. Hopefully ownership will turn things around and save this once great Chicagoland course.
The course is a great Pete Dye layout but for the current price asking over $85 prime time is a poor value. Go down the road and play Cog Hill for a better value.
An absolute blast to play
As a long time chicago area golfer Ruffled Feathers will always be in the Mt Rousmore of area courses. While the conditions have deteriorated quite a bit and the course looks a bit worn in some spots one quality remains. It's the most fun lay-out around and is an absolute blast to play. A great collection of par 3s and par 5s and some beastly par 4s with a bit of target golf sprinkled in. Don't expect country club like conditions but notwithstanding that, it's a treat to play.
Used to be a round you looked forward too.
I made the time on GOLFNOW and called course to see if riders were allowed. Most courses charge nothing or just $5 . I was never clearly told if allowed or how much. I was told on the phone that $20 would be charged if 3 carts needed for the tee time. If I wanted to go later there would be no charge so came later. Got to the counter told $20 would be charged paid that no problem. Now the fun starts. Go to driving range grass tees closed and 2 carts parked almost sideways at the range cannot get past them asked to please move cart they just stared and left it there (no employee there) Went to first tee waited for two groups ahead that hit six balls than seven balls off the first tee (no starter). Next tee same. Next tee same. No beverage cart no range no starter. Left after 3 3/4 holes went to clubhouse got the $20 back nothing for the round I paid for. I have played this course maybe 15 times (always a great experience)over the years and I do not think I would play again unless under $25 and even than think real hard about it. This was THE WORST GOLF EXPERIENCE I have had since playing golf since 1981. Think real hard before booking a round with them. Would give no stars if able.
Really Bad Shape
I want to start by saying that everyone I met at this course was super friendly. From checking in at the pro shop, to the bar tender who gave me a sandwich at lunch. Also they have really nice golf carts. And that is where the good ends...
The course from top to bottom is in very poor shape. I read similar reviews but I've always wanted to play this course and was hoping that people were exaggerating. They are not. All greens and not just the par 3's have numerous unrepaired divot marks. Same with many of the fairways. Many of the tee boxes were in poor shape as well, especially the par 3's which I realize is always going to get the most divots but in this case it's especially bad.
The course layout is very challenging. Anytime I see Pete Dye designed the course I always bring a few extra golf balls. Bottom line is that this could be an excellent course based on the design but it is in need of significant renovation. I paid $53.00 on Golf Now so I'm not too upset about the greens fee but if you pay full price for this place you're getting ripped off.
Great design, but in poor shape
I've always loved this course but it doesn't seem to be well run these days (no starter, hard to find someone near the bag drop) and the greens are in bad shape as are the tee boxes and some fairways.
Do not waste more than $60 to play here.
They did not honor our driving range bucket that was included in the price.
The tee boxs were not maintained and not flat.
There was no sand in the bunkers, only small stones.
The greens were filled with ball marks.
I played this course three years ago and it was well worth the $100. It is not the same course. Do not waste your money playing here. The layout is great but the staff and condition are extremely disappointing.
great experience
The coarse was not in the pristine shape it has been in the past but still a great experience
