Ruffled Feathers Golf Club
About
Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Lemont is conveniently situated just a half hour outside downtown Chicago. Pete Dye and his son P.B. collaborated to design the course, making it the only Dye design in the Chicago area. A well thought-out strategy will be greatly rewarded on this challenging layout and bad shots made without any thought will be severely punished. This is definitely not a golf course where you can just grip it and rip it. The fairways are fairly straight and forgiving, but most of the approach shots play to tricky elevated greens. There are also strategically placed bunkers framing the greens and water hazards come into play on several holes as well. Ruffled Feathers Golf Club's par 3s have a reputation for being particularly challenging. But depending on how windy it is, the final hole might present the most formidable challenge.

nice layout but poorly maintained
For one of the top tier courses in illinois that are open to the public I was very disappointed. The amenities were non-existent. The practice facilities were as poorly maintained as the course. The fact that half the sand bunkers on the course were nothing but dirt should give you a good indication of how the rest of the course is maintained. Not worth the $78 price tag.
Outstanding, challenging and fun layout, with multiple blind shots and challenging greens...a must play!
I have heard many good things about Ruffled Feathers over the years, and finally managed to play a round over the 4th of July weekend. WOW, this Pete Dye layout is truly a gem, with multiple risk/reward opportunities, blind shots, varied terrains and two of the toughest water holes (11th, an island green, and 17th, a 200 yard carry over water to a narrow green from the tips). An additional bonus is the quality of the food from the clubhouse grill, which was outstanding. the only negative was the quality of the bunkers, which were in surprisingly porr shape for such a verenable course.
Very difficult course
I shot 79 from the tips the first time playing this course. Anyone who knows Pete Dye courses though knows to expect a challenge. Luckily I was paired up with someone who had played there before. There are a few places where you don't know where to hit it without playing having played it before. The carts are equipped with GPS which does help when wondering where to go or how far to hit it. The back 9 has some great holes. Overall, its a great course to lay and I would definitely play it again. Well worth the 50$ from golf now.
Challenging Course
This course is both fun and challenging. There are some greens that need some work, but for the most part they are in pretty good condition. That being said I'm not sure that this course is worth $95, the regular weekend rate, but if you can find a deal for around $60 it is well worth it.
Course was in great shape, lotta golf for the money
The course was in great shape, challenging round of golf, and I got a lot of golf in for the money.... I will go back and play this course again !!
Great track in need of repair
My friends and I love the layout and the challenge of Ruffled Feathers. We hadn't played there in a few years because, frankly, it's pricey for us. We saw a great deal on golfnow ($40!) and jumped on it.
A couple of the tee boxes were not flat and were beat up with numerous divots. Our biggest issue, however, was with the bunkers. Almost every one we saw was a very thin layer of sand with dirt underneath. There were also many rocks in them, and, in a few, the plastic drainage pipe was sticking out of the sand!
Poor condition
Probably had 15 greens that were covered with unrepaired ball marks. Tee boxes were also unmanicured and the bunkers were super shabby looking. The course was challenging enough and there were some nice holes, but the municipal caliber conditions offset a lot or that for me. With the greens fees being what they are, and being a Pete Dye design, I expected a lot more. Won't be going back.
The. greens were in bad shape.
They need someone to get onto the greens for repair.
Great evening for golf
Ruffled Feathers is one of the more challenging courses in the Chicago area. You finish a tough hole, and really need an easy hole. But there are no easy holes. The weather was ominous all day, but it cleared in the late afternoon. However, the course was soggy in places, especially near the front of several greens. These areas were being chewed up by large divots. Only negative aspect was that people weren't fixing their ball marks on the greens. Help the course out, fix your ballmarks. Played the front very quickly, ran into a slow foursome on 9, skipped 10. Played 11 and 12, skipped the next two holes. We were able to go back later and play the holes we skipped. Played in just over 3 hours.
Great Layout; poor conditioni.ng
A $25 greens fee with cart at Ruffled Feathers? I took the deal as it's a nice track at that rate but I "missed" the fine print that said I would be out immediately after an outing. This meant that there was no cart for me on a 90 degree day, no starter which meant a mad scramble with other discounters at No 1, each green I kid you not had at least 20 unrepaired ball marks and we never saw a cart girl. I'd rather pay more money and see it in better shape.
Fun, challenging course
I have played Ruffled Feathers at least 20 times over the years and am curious each year what condition the course will be in. Twilight rate $41. For that price, it is excellent value in Chicagoland. However, I would not pay full price of $95 to play in 5 hours with greens that are chopped up.
I've never seen more unrepaired ball marks
It's ok for $40 but for the $80 charged normally it is a bad deal. The greens are in less than ideal shape and apparently no one fixes ball marks.
GOOD OVERALL
This is a great course if you can get it for $55.50 early in the morning. Greens were still healing, when the heal, lookout they will be fast. Overall great course for the price I payed.
Quite challenging and beautiful layout.
The course has a very nice layout surrounded by beautiful homes.
Long par 4's and challenging par 3's around water obstacles make it quite challenging. Greens were recently aerated which greatly reduced the quality of the golf experience.
Good deal
This was good for the price and last second. Day we went there, greens were under a little repair and not as good as I've seen them before. Overall, challenging course; fourth or fifth time I played there. I always make a point to check out the deals at this course if they are available to play there as much as possible. Not worth full fees, but definitely a nice course still.
Something for everyone
Very nice course but could have used a ranger to speed up the slow foursome in front of us.This course, for the money it charges, should not have players waiting on every shot.
The course is an outstanding layout.
There are features of this course that will inspire, please and frustrate you as you move from hole to hole. Plenty of hazards and generous fairways. You will be tested!!!
There is a need to get the Tee boxes sorted as many had uneven surfaces and this made your footing unstable.
Poorly maintained, greens were choppy, fairways were mediocre
Very disappointed in the condition of the course and having to stay on the cart paths only pretty much made the GPS useless. I won't play there again.
Course Conditions were Dismal
They should be ashamed to charge this much money for a course in such poor shape. If I am paying $100 for a round I am expecting a challenging course in country club condition. While this course was challenging the condition was downright poor. I've played park district courses that charge less and are in better shape. The bunkers were totally eroded and full of standing water. I lost at least 3 balls in greenside bunkers that were filled with water so deep it made it impossible to fish your ball out. I've played other Dye designed courses (Harbour Town, Whistling Straits, Blackwolf Run) and was really looking forward to playing Ruffled Feathers, but the poor course conditions really took away from the attractive Dye designed layout. The tee boxes were also pretty chewed up but I can overlook that. On the plus side, pace of play was good and the greens were smooth and fast. I would've been more forgiving had the round cost about half of the $100 price.
Greens need alot of attention
Overall, the course could be phenomenal, however the greens have alot of work needed. They roll pretty fast and firm, but have tremendous amounts of ball mark damage. Not sure if its due to alot of outings, but it is unacceptable at a course this nice. The fariways have terrible drainage, expect to play this course in casual water conditions. Also, no ranger in sight. Played through 2 groups in the first 5 holes in 50 minutes. Then sat on every shot the next 13 holes. The back nine took over 3 hours. Could be great track, management is missing the boat on this chicago gem.
