Be Patient This Year
It's cart path only until next year to give the new fairways a chance to take hold and fill in. Actually I was amazed at how lush 90% of the fairways and greens were for being less than a year old. There's still a few bare areas which is to be expected but you can tell it's being addressed.
The layout has been toughened up by totally changing the layout of the 1st hole and the first 5 holes on the back 9 along with 17 and 18.
The pace of play here is usually pretty slow before noon. MP is a bedroom community and this course has a tremendously faithful retiree following. So it's usually quite full at the early tee times.
My only complaint and the reason I won't give it 5 Stars is this. It's a short course squeezed into a residential neighborhood. 6305 from the back tees. 5955 from the next set of tees. Unfortunately from this 2nd set of tees there are 3 par 4's at 420 - 430 yards. That's unreachable in two for most of the players that play from this distance. The reason they play from 6000 and under is usually they're short off the tee. Someone please tell me what PGA course is set up where some of the shorter pros can't reach every par 4 in two. Answer: There are none. So why slow your course down by forcing players to play three par 4's like they're par 5's? I guess they could play down to the next tees but they're considerably shorter, 5235. Why not just make them par 5's?
The greens are very quick, smooth and well maintained as is the entire course in general. The practice facility is first rate as is the bar and restaurant which has a great big veranda overlooking the practice greens.
Overall a fun and challenging course to play. I'll be keeping it in my yearly rotation of courses I play.
Great Renovation - Almost There on Everything Else
Just completed a year-long renovation. I love the changes they made including a major expansion to the practice facility. I will now be practicing there on a regular basis. Course is designed to be forgiving for average golfers but challenging to golfers who can hit the ball 250+ from the tee They did this through placement of hazards and varying fairway widths at different landing areas.
My only negative is with the current cart path only rules. With the recent dry weather, there is no need for this rule to be in place. I get that they want to baby the course after their recent upgrades, but this kills the pace of play and reduces the enjoyment of the round. For now, this will be my practice facility, but I won't play the course again until they change the cart rules.
4 1/4 stars parkland course with nice clubhouse
Enjoyed my day. Decent range except mats only Mon-Fri. Also has a nice practice area separate from the range with very good halfway house/ and modern well designed clubhouse. The course is in nice shape no real issues except for some tee boxes. I understand Mt. Prospect will be undergoing a significant renovation and will be closed next year so I would make an effort to play it prior to this seasons end. Course is somewhat claustrophobic with many short Par 4's and has interesting routing/tree lined fairways/smallish greens and tightly packed into the space. Several errant golf balls from other holes got close to us....greens are well maintained, retain their old school charm and this track is worth a play....make sure you pay under $40.....
