Fast 9
Good neighborhood fast round course. 8th hole needs redesigning. Trees have grown over the fairway
Winter Bonus
Course was in surprisingly good condition for late December and weather was moderate enough for play (mid 40's). This added up to a very enjoyable experience.
Did not feel pushed
The course had a nice crowd and it was playing a little slow, but no one was pushing us to play faster. I hate it when courses push the pace of play, esp when playing with novice golfers. It was a beautiful day to play and talk with your group and not feet rushed at each hole.
Cart Path Only Golf Day
All I can say is I should have called as we had terrible storms recently. No fault of the course but basically it should have been closed. It was a sloppy mess and quite frankly the course lay out sucks, sorry but it does. It's only a 9 hole and I don't generally play these and can honestly say I won't be back. Seems like no one takes the time to fix ball marks on the greens anymore. I did not enjoy this round at all to say the least.
Enjoyable course amidst a nice neighborhood
Rob Roy course was really enjoyable to play and provided a good variety of straight forward and challenging holes.
Nice layout for a 9 holer
Fairways were pretty near perfect, greens good except for there are some people there that don't know what a divot is or how to repair one. Bunkers are typical for an Illinois Muni, not so good.
Mixed bag, but mostly good.
Overall pretty OK. It was convenient and relatively inexpensive, but I wouldn't go expecting any great level of service.
Pros:
Course was cute, manageable, appeared well maintained (we played in February in Chicago, so hard to really tell). Relatively easy (except the narrow fairways). Interior facilities were a little 90's-ish but clean and adequate.
Cons:
You had better not have a bad draw or a slice because the homes that line the course are practically on the fairway.
The staff was a little -meh-. The gentleman who checked us in, while polite, was clearly overwhelmed with 2 people in line and the phone ringing.
Secondly, my car was hit in the parking lot while I was golfing and I went inside to let them know and I was met with a shoulder shrug and they were like "sorry, we don't have cameras." No offer to call the police or to take my name in case someone said something later, no incident report, no nothing. Even if the guy had been a little more sympathetic that would have been something, but he really offered nothing.
Rob Roy Golf Course
The Good: Rob Roy is a decent suburban 9-hole layout that used to be a 27-hole course until a developer built a crowded condo complex. Fairway conditions and greens were in good shape for middle February in Chicago. Layout has some interesting holes, most notably the Par 5's that provide some unique challenges and a couple good Par 3's. Clubhouse is nice for a nine-hole course, which includes a restaurant and banquet area in addition to a decent pro shop. Staff overall is friendly. Average value for the greater Chicago area.
The Bad: Greens, to be expected, were very shaggy and slow. Be prepared for a 2.5+ hour experience for 9-holes. Course has very limited on-course signage and yardage markers, which contributes to the poor pace of play. No driving range (you can go to the Woodland Trails driving range down the road) and putting green is lacking. Par 4's are pretty ordinary and unmemorable. Course feels claustrophobic with condos and houses intruding just off the fairways.
The Verdict: Rob Roy is a decent place to hack around if you want a cheap Chicago option or if you only have time for nine holes. Just don't expect many amenities or to get done that quickly.
Best Hole: The Par 5 5th is the most interesting hole on the course. A drive must avoid water right and straight (if you're a big hitter). The approach shot(s) are over water to a thin fairway that is guarded by houses right and large trees left. A tough par!
No beverage cart on course
Overall great play, they allowed a group of women to go ahead of us 10 girls playing at once. No beverage carr
