Played this course as part of a golf trip to/around the Cleveland area in late May 2023. This course was included on our itinerary based on its listing as a Top Course by Golf Advisor.

PACE: Went out early and never really had anyone in front or behind us.

CONDITION: This course was in excellent condition. The tees, greens, fairways, and bunkers all were in fantastic condition. The greens were quite fast, but ran true.

LAYOUT: Played the Red tees (6,500). This course is difficult. It starts with the semi-blind tee shot on #1. This visual intimidation off the tee is a theme throughout the course. The course uses the topography and well-placed bunkers to challenge you off the tee. The greens are very fast, but fair. All of the par 3s are fun, and the par 5s are challenging. Felt like I was hitting a lot of long irons into the par 4s. Given the layout of this course, I would recommend taking a cart; I wouldn’t consider this course to be walkable.

STAFF: Got us paid and out on the course.

VALUE: Given the conditions and quality of this course, I felt the price was fair.

I had no expectations going into Blackthorn. But next time I go (and there will be a next time) I'll be sure to be focused and ready for a challenge. For an 8-handicap this course is a good, and enjoyable test.
