Um, what happened?
This course has gone downhill significantly over the past couple years. The bunkers are in terrible shape, I'm not sure what they're doing with the tees but the tips aren't even an option with markers and some boxes aren't even mowed. Course is pretty unsightly and I was embarrassed to have brought a friend with me who had never seen the course before. Won't be back until something changes.
First Time Very Very Nice ! !
While only living a few miles from Aberdeen, I somehow never managed to get out and play this gem of a golf course. Could be that since I am only playing for a few years, that I thought it would be too challenging for me. Well today I played it for the first time. It is indeed a very, very nice course that is also challenging, but not overwhelmingly so. Choose a tee box that fits your game, and enjoy the challenges that await you. From the grounds to the course itself, all is topnotch. Well kept, and well maintained are the keywords here. And all of the facilities are superb. My tee time booking came with complimentary range balls, which was a very nice touch, affording me a chance to limber up my swing and warm up a bit. One can hit as many or as few balls as one likes. The staff was very friendly, courteous, and most accommodating. I did not order any food, but the ice cold beer at the end of my round while relaxing on the patio was mighty tasty and refreshing. Pro shop also looked well stocked, if you need anything to fill your golf bag. Thank you to all at Aberdeen for making my first experience a 10 out of 10 ! ! ! Will definitely be back again more often.
Poorly maintained
They have let the course go. weeds, bunkers filled with grass and weeds, greens aerated but never rolled, bumpy and full of holes, cart paths are so bad in some areas they are hazardous. This used to be a nice track, now its an eye sore.
Best Greens of the Season (so far)
The putting surfaces at Aberdeen were excellent - best I've seen at this place in several years. Given all the rain recently it was amazing how well the course drained. Very nice golf course, interesting and challenging. Well maintained....just wish folks would replace/repair their divots in the fairway. Highly recommend......4.5 stars.....gave it 5 because of the surprising maintained conditions.
Great layout, but.....
Greens and fairways perfect, but the bunkers:
Some had just dirt, that was not maintained at all.
They are working on them as some have new sand delivered awaiting installation.
They also have weeds (not heavy grass, but weeds) around the edges of these bunkers. You can hit a ball there and not find it. Need some work there, please.
We played the bunkers with the knowledge that they were bad, and we improved our lies in the ones we could play. Just make this a local agreement among your group and go enjoy this course.
Tip: Watch the hidden water on the right side of #3. The hole lines sets up for you to hit it over there, and if you go too far right, the ball will run into the water.
I'm not one to be critical of people involved in the game, but . . .
. . . The Course at Aberdeen could be so much better. There are obvious flaws. The "bunkers" have no sand. You have to play off dirt/mud and contend with weeds. From what I have now read in previous reviews, the bunkers have been this way for a long time. Diagrams of the holes on the scorecard would help, especially on blind approaches. The reflectors on the pins need replacement or repair, as my laser rangefinder only worked on 4 holes. I'm sorry, but in its present condition, this is a rare course that I cannot recommend.
Golf Course experience
It was a wonderful experience. Course is wonderfully layed out with all of its features. There is a little bit of everything water, trees, surprises which makes it a pleasant playing experience. I will definitely recommend this golf course to my friends. We will be back next week.
challenging but fair layout
Overall course layout great. Greens were fast, but held approach shots well.
Bunkers however are terrible and if u do not buy yardage book you have no idea of course layout.
Other than these 2 things course of Aberdeen is fantastic course to play.
Great Value
While this course was well off the beaten path for my group, the value made up for it. The course is aesthetically designed and well kept. Some of the greens were a bit rough, but nothing ridiculous. We paid $44 with a cart on Sunday morning. For that price, this course is a very good value.
Great course & fun layout
Greens were firm and hard to stop on the some of greens even wedge shots. But around greens were soft. Approach shots were tricky. They didn't take care of bunkers and bunkers were horrible. Since they don't cut the trees around course, some holes looked different to the yardage book.
Very nice golf course
Great shape of the golf course and very hilly and difficult though but overall great time
Beautiful Course
Aside from a partially flooded green, this course is absolutely beautiful. My only wish is the availability of a scorecard giving a drawing of each hole, and better yardage/distance markings on par 3's.
Great course. Long wait time
This was my first time playing here. The conditions were excellent for mid May. Beautiful and scenic. Was a great day except for the pace of play.
Course in fabulous condition!
I think the title says it all..twas a beautiful day. The fairways were running. The greens were smooth..
Awesome greens
The greens were incredible smooth to putt on especially so early in the season it was something I didn't expect. My only complaint is more yardage information either on the score card or on the tee box.
Top 5 Northwest Indiana Course
I play two or three times a week at a rotation of different courses in Northwest Indiana and Aberdeen is definitely in the top 5 public courses in the region.
This course is all about keeping it in play. There are a few forced carries over marsh land and deep ravines. There is water on probably 5-6 holes. For long hitters, there is only one par 5 that is reasonably "reachable". Two of the par 5's have fairways that run out into a ravine at about 240 and 260 so you will have to hit less than driver. In fact, if you drive the ball 250+ you will only need to hit driver a few times all day. (unless you're on the tips)
The best part of this course is the layout and mix of holes. Except for the bunkers, which are HORRIFIC, the course is very well kept. The bunkers are like hitting off of the Utah salt flats. Or the moon's surface. That said, the tees, fairways, and greens have been great all year. I like to play the ball down and take extra precautions to avoid the bunkers at all costs.
Make sure you play from the correct set of tees. This course is difficult and can get brutal if you don't manage your game properly. If you spray your driver, your odds of being able to play it off of the adjacent hole are slim to none. There are killer weeds and fescue on basically every hole, so hit it straight.
If you're looking to play a new course or drive some distance, this place is fun, challenging, and nicely maintained (all but the bunkers). It is definitely worth the drive. Bring bug spray in summer and watch your ball closely in October (leaves). Good luck! You're gonna need it.
Nature at it's finest
You'll love the scenery, but make certain you know yardages and wind direction and velocity. Lots of natural areas to carry, proper club selection is the secret to low scoring.
I've played this course several times, It's always well maintained, but pace of play during peak times is not good.
I love the fall temps, but hate losing balls in the middle of fairways, (under leaves). Was impressed this particular time of year that the fairways had been completely cleared of autumn leaves and debris.
Sand trap conditions and Pace of play were horrible!
Booked a 1020 Sunday morning time and teed off at 1010. Didn't finish until almost 3pm! And ties the record for one of my longest rounds of 2014. That's completely unacceptable Aberdeen. Never saw a ranger and even the beverage cart girl was amazed that the 16th thru 18th holes were completely empty when she visited us on the 14th tee.
Course itself was in good shape. Tee boxes recently aerated (they needed it) and fairways in good shape. Greens were pretty fast (fastest speed conditions I've experienced at Aberdeen over the last several years) however several greens there were many old ball marks not completely repaired which made for a few unexpected bumps in putts if you didn't closely inspect and repair them prior putting. Land in a sand trap? All I can say is good luck. Understand they will aerate the greens in a week or two so call prior to booking.
This golf course is a really fun play....too bad they didn't care about the pace of play a lick the morning we played. Only giving them 3 stars significantly downgrading due to pace of play and the sand traps. Normally this a solid 4 star plus experience.
Nice course
Nice golf course. Good layout and fair. Love the fact you don't see any other golf holes when you are playing your hole. Very relaxing scenery.
Enjoyable outing!
The course was in excellent condition. The fairways were like carpet, and the greens were quick and true. I really enjoyed playing the course and felt it was a fair challenge for my golf game. WIll definitely play this course again!
